Message Point: Jesus was raised from the dead giving victory over death and declaring Himself God.

Focus Passage: Matthew 27 - 28 (Pew Bible page 1148)

Introduction: As the world chases after eggs and rabbits, let us remember the Real Reason for the day; the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, giving us forgiveness of sins and the hope of Eternal Life.

I. Matthew 27:27-32 (page 1148)

a. Jesus is God. John 1:3 says that all things came into being through Him.

b. He was there in the beginning; by Him and through Him all things were created.

c. He created the hill called Calvary; he planted the tree that would grow into the cross on which he was crucified.

d. Kathy Keck sings He Grew the Tree

II. John 19:23-27 (page 1248)

a. When Jesus was crucified, He hung there for everyone to see. In utter humility, He was raised up; wounded for our transgressions.

b. His mother and siblings were there. His friends were there. His followers were there. What could have been going through their minds? As Mary undoubtedly reflected on the miracle of His birth and the announcement by the angels, she must have thought about Joseph teaching Jesus the carpenter trade.

c. Sally Boyne sings Driving Nails

III. Matthew 27:45-54 (page 1149)

a. Jesus hung on the cross for at least 3 hours. 3 hours of absolute and complete physical torture. His whole body spasmed in pain. He couldn’t breathe. His blood was being drained away.

b. At the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus told Peter to put his sword away, that at His disposal was a legion of angels waiting for the word. That word never came. It was His love for us that held Him on the cross.

c. Linda Cameron sings Ten Thousand Angels

IV. Matthew 28:1-7 (page 1150)

a. Even His closest followers didn’t expect Him to rise from the dead. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, Salome the wife of Zebedee and the mother of James and John, and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward went to the tomb to anoint His body with spices, for there had been no time at His burial.

b. These women weren’t concerned with the armed guards nor the fact that there was a HUGE stone that closed the tomb or the fact that Herod’s seal had been placed on the tomb preventing it from being open. They just needed to serve Jesus.

c. Karen Rotert sings He’s Alive

Invitation: In His death, we find Forgiveness. In His resurrection, we find Eternal Life. All the “leaders” of other religions have graves that are occupied. Jesus’ tomb is the only empty grave! He came that we might have life. Choose you this day whom you will serve. Whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved. His name is Jesus, the only name under Heaven by which we can be saved!
