SECURING The SUCCESS Of JESUS’ MISSION-IV—John 17:1-26

Attention:

Walking our dog/Our mission for the pastorium is to keep the carpet free of urine & excrement, which the church has so heavily invested in(sweat, time & money but mostly sweat & time)/In order to secure the success of that mission, We must walk the dog regularly!/We must make sure that she ‘does her business’ in appropriate places/Thereby the carpet remains clean!

Likewise Jesus set precedence regarding His overall mission.

Need:

Jesus’ prayer in the Upper Room reflected the means to securing the success of His mission.

The success of Jesus’ mission is secured.

The Ultimate FAVOR(:9-10)

Explanation:(:9-10) Separation/Blessing

:9—“I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have given Me, for they are Yours.”

Jesus, as if to strengthen His supplication, is praying on behalf of these disciples. In contrast, Jesus is not asking the Father on behalf of “the world” but on behalf of the very ones whom God Himself “has given” to Jesus.

There is a definite disparity/distance/separative aspect to the application of God’s favor. It transcends the limitations of Government, Geography, Social, Intellect, Finance, Freedom, Economics.

All those who belong to Jesus have been “given” or acquired by God the Father & are therefore naturally(or rather, supernaturally)His.

“Pray/Ask”2X(See :15, 20)—erwtaw—1) To question; 2) To ask—2a) To request, entreat, beg, beseech. Erwtaw denotes the form of the request. Erwtaw is to request a person to do(rarely to give) something; referring more directly to the person, it is naturally used in exhortation, etc. Strong—To interrogate; by implication--To request.

There are at least 7 other words in Greek which can be translated as “pray.”

“For”3X—peri—Prep.—1) About, concerning, on account of, because of, around, near. Strong—properly--Through(all over), i.e. Around; figuratively--With respect to; used in various applications, of place, cause or time(with the genitive case denoting the subject or occasion or superlative point; with the accusative case the locality, circuit, matter, circumstance or general period).

:10—“And all Mine are Yours, & Yours are Mine, & I am glorified in them.””

Jesus declared, in prayer to the Father, that He had been “glorified” by means of the very ones which He had been given. By means of the believer’s belief, the Son of God is “glorified.”

If God is openly glorified in your life then you are favored of God.

“Glorified/Brought...Glory”(See :1, 4, 5)—doxazw—1) To think, suppose, be of opinion; 2) To praise, extol, magnify, celebrate; 3) To honor, do honor to, hold in honor; 4) To make glorious, adorn with luster, clothe with splendor—4a) To impart glory to something, render it excellent, 4b) To make renowned, render illustrious—4b1) To cause the dignity & worth of some person or thing to become manifest & acknowledged. Strong—To render(or esteem) glorious (in a wide application).

Argumentation:

Rom. 8:26-27—“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

Rom. 8:28-39—“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; & whom He justified, these He also glorified. What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, & furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “For Your sake we are killed all day long; We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Jer. 29:10-14—“For thus says the LORD: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you & perform My good word toward you, & cause you to return to this place. For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace & not of evil, to give you a future & a hope. Then you will call upon Me & go & pray to Me, & I will listen to you. And you will seek Me & find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the LORD, & I will bring you back from your captivity; I will gather you from all the nations & from all the places where I have driven you, says the LORD, & I will bring you to the place from which I cause you to be carried away captive.”

God promises to bring them to the very place of their origin(Jerusalem).

The Ultimate PROTECTION(:11-12a)

Explanation:(:11-12)

:11—“Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, & I come to You. Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that they may be one as We are.”

At the time of His prayer, Jesus revealed that He was “no longer in the world.” Jesus had entirely overcome the world(16:33). He saw Himself in the Father’s presence & thus in heaven already with his former glory(:5; 1:1-2). He knew that He would very shortly “come to” His Father(:13).

However, this High Priestly Prayer appears to have come before Jesus’ agonizing prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane(See 18:1-3; Lk. 22:39-46).

Jesus related His knowledge that though He was(presently) not “in the world”, that His disciples most assuredly yet remain in it(:15).

As a result of His leaving His disciples “in the world”, He beckons His Holy Father to “keep them”(Protect; To attend to carefully, Take care of, To guard) in the Father’s holy name those who had been given to Jesus.

They will be kept “through” the Father’s “name.” All that is relegated to the name of God is entailed in such safekeeping.

The purpose of this “keeping” is that the disciples “may be one” in the same sense that Jesus & the Father are one. Jesus had the same relationship to His Holy Father during His incarnated/earthly ministry that others can have with their Holy Father, while they exist in human flesh upon this earth. We are to be so ‘in tune’ with God that our thoughts & actions become the thoughts & actions of God as we surrender our flesh to His will.

Of course, Jesus relationship to the Father is much deeper than that of mankind in general, because Jesus is the Father’s only begotten Son, born of the Holy Spirit by the virgin & is thus able to offer payment for sin(s).

“Keep/Protect”(See :6, 11, 15)—threw :12a—“While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; & none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.””

Jesus also related in prayer to His Father that, while on this earth, He had assumed His assigned role of keeping His disciples in the Father’s name, the very name which the Father had given Jesus. Jesus had guarded them(from Satan?).

“Kept/Keeping/Protected/Guarded”(See :6, 11, 15)—threw—1) To attend to carefully, take care of—1a) To guard, 1b) metaph. To keep, one in the state in which he is, 1c) To observe, 1d) To reserve: to undergo something. Threw expresses watchful care & is suggestive of present possession. Threw may mark the result of which fulassw is the means. Strong—To guard(from loss or injury, properly, by keeping the eye upon; & thus differing from fulassw, which is properly to prevent escaping; & from koustwdia, which implies a fortress or full military lines of apparatus), i.e. To note(a prophecy; figuratively--To fulfill a command); by implication--To detain(in custody; figuratively--to maintain); by extension--To withhold(for personal ends; figuratively--to keep unmarried).

“Kept/Kept...Safe”—fulassw—1) To guard; 2) To observe for one's self something to escape. Fulassw indicates safe custody & often implies assault from without. Strong—To watch, i.e. Be on guard(literally of figuratively); by implication--To preserve, obey, avoid.

Argumentation:

2Tim. 1:8-12—“Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God, who has saved us & called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose & grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began, but has now been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has abolished death & brought life & immortality to light through the gospel, to which I was appointed a preacher, an apostle, & a teacher of the Gentiles. For this reason I also suffer these things; nevertheless I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed & am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day.”

*Jn. 10:27-30—““My sheep hear My voice, & I know them, & they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, & they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; & no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I & My Father are one.””

Jn. 6:37-40—““All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, & the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son & believes in Him may have everlasting life; & I will raise him up at the last day.””

1Jn. 2:25—“And this is the promise that He has promised us--eternal life.”

Jn. 5:24—““Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word & believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, & shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”

Rom. 6:16-23—“Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness? But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin, yet you obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. And having been set free from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, & of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness. For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. What fruit did you have then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now having been set free from sin, & having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, & the end, everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Isa. 45:16-17—“They shall be ashamed And also disgraced, all of them; They shall go in confusion together, Who are makers of idols. But Israel shall be saved by the LORD With an everlasting salvation; You shall not be ashamed or disgraced Forever & ever.” Illustration:

The Ultimate FAIL(:12b)

Explanation:(:12b) Plan/Excuse

:12—“While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; & none of them is lost except the son of perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.””

None but one of the disciples were lost to the devil from the shadow of the Father’s will. Even this one(Judas Iscariot) was lost (“perished”) in fulfillment of the Scriptures themselves(God’s will).(See Ps. 41:9-11 per Jn. 13:18; Ps. 109:6-13; Acts 1:15-22) He perished being the “son of perdition.” That is he is a standing representation of what it means to be lost.

Judas lived with, spoke with, heard the wisdom of, experienced the Divine power of the Christ of God...for 3 years!

I personally cannot tell with absolute abandon where another stands with the Lord. I can only judge another’s truth by their word(s), their decisions, & by observation of consistency over time. There can be a true disparity between perception & reality.

Prophecies regarding Judas:

Ps. 41:9-11—“Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me[Jn. 13:18]. But You, O LORD, be merciful to me, & raise me up, That I may repay them. By this I know that You are well pleased with me, Because my enemy does not triumph over me.”

Ps. 109:6-13—“Set a wicked man over him, And let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is judged, let him be found guilty, And let his prayer become sin. Let his days be few, And let another take his office. Let his children be fatherless, And his wife a widow. Let his children continually be vagabonds, & beg; Let them seek their bread also from their desolate places. Let the creditor seize all that he has, And let strangers plunder his labor. Let there be none to extend mercy to him, Nor let there be any to favor his fatherless children. Let his posterity be cut off, And in the generation following let their name be blotted out.”

Acts 1:15-25—“And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (altogether the number of names was about a hundred & twenty), & said, “Men & brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; “for he was numbered with us & obtained a part in this ministry.” (Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; & falling headlong, he burst open in the middle & all his entrails gushed out. And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) “For it is written in the book of Psalms: ‘Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it’; &, ‘Let another take his office.’ “Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in & out among us, “beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”” “And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, & Matthias. And they prayed & said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen to take part in this ministry & apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.””

“Lost/Perished”—apollumi—1) To destroy—1a) To put out of the way entirely, abolish, put an end to ruin, 1b) Render useless, 1c) To kill, 1d) To declare that one must be put to death, 1e) metaph. to devote or give over to eternal misery in hell, 1f) To perish, to be lost, ruined, destroyed; 2) To destroy—2a) To lose.

“Perdition/doomed to destruction”—apwleia—1) Destroying, utter destruction—1a) Of vessels; 2) A perishing, ruin, destruction—2a) Of money, 2b) The destruction which consists of eternal misery in hell. Strong—Ruin or loss(physical, spiritual or eternal).

“Fulfilled”(See :13)—plhrow—1) To make full, to fill up, i.e. to fill to the full—1a) To cause to abound, to furnish or supply liberally 2) To render full, i.e. To complete. Strong—To make replete, i.e. literally--To cram(a net), level up(a hollow), or figuratively--To furnish(or imbue, diffuse, influence), satisfy, execute(an office), finish(a period or task), verify(or coincide with a prediction), etc.

Argumentation:

Mat. 25:31-46—““When the Son of Man comes in His glory, & all the holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. All the nations will be gathered before Him, & He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: for I was hungry & you gave Me food; I was thirsty & you gave Me drink; I was a stranger & you took Me in; I was naked & you clothed Me; I was sick & you visited Me; I was in prison & you came to Me.’ “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry & feed You, or thirsty & give You drink? ‘When did we see You a stranger & take You in, or naked & clothe You? ‘Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, & come to You?’ “And the King will answer & say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’ “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil & his angels: for I was hungry & you gave Me no food; I was thirsty & you gave Me no drink; ‘I was a stranger & you did not take Me in, naked & you did not clothe Me, sick & in prison & you did not visit Me.’ “Then they also will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, & did not minister to You?’ “Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ “And these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.””

Rom. 5:1-10—“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, & rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; & perseverance, character; & character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.”

*1Jn. 2:18-25—“Little children, it is the last hour; & as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, & you know all things. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, & that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father & the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also. Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son & in the Father. And this is the promise that He has promised us--eternal life.”

Jude 1-2—“Jude, a bondservant of Jesus Christ, & brother of James, To those who are called, sanctified by God the Father, & preserved in Jesus Christ: Mercy, peace, & love be multiplied to you.”

Heb. 7:24-25—“But He[Jesus], because He continues forever, has an unchangeable priesthood. Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost those who come to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.”

*Jn. 3:14-18—““And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

*Jn. 3:35-36—““The Father loves the Son, & has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; & he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.””

*1Jn. 5:10-12—“He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, & this life is in His Son. He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life.”

*Rev. 21:7-8—““He who overcomes shall inherit all things, & I will be his God & he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, & all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire & brimstone, which is the second death.””

The Ultimate DISPOSITION(:13)

Explanation:(:13) Joy/Possession

:13—“But now I come to You, & these things I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.”

Jesus did not speak what He spoke in a vacuum but He spoke them in the very world who turned from Him.(1:10-11).

“My joy”—?What is Jesus’ “joy”...That which brings Him inner gladness....It is loving & serving His Father, doing His will & fulfilling His own ordained destiny(as Son, Messiah, Priest, King & Savior). Declaring God’s salvation to a lost & sin sick world.

Likewise our “joy” is also tied to our personal love for God.

Jesus’ disciples can & should have the fullness of Jesus’ joy in themselves. The disciple’s witness is to possess the very “joy” of Jesus, which He has & had in service to His Father.

Jesus’ “joy” comes by means of hearing the Father’s word as given thru Jesus, God in flesh. Without a personal close bond to Jesus, the believer cannot grasp Jesus’ “joy”, much less have it as an integral part of his/her life’s direction.

“Speak”—lalew—1) To utter a voice or emit a sound; 2) To speak; 3) To talk; 4) To utter, tell; 5) To use words in order to declare one's mind & disclose one's thoughts. Strong—To talk, i.e. Utter words.

“Joy”—cara—1) Joy, gladness. Strong—Cheerfulness, i.e. Calm delight.

“Fulfilled”(See :12)—plhrow—1) To make full, to fill up, i.e. to fill to the full—1a) To cause to abound, to furnish or supply liberally 2) To render full, i.e.

Ps. 51:12-13—“Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways, And sinners shall be converted to You.”

Lk. 2:8-11—“Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, & the glory of the Lord shone around them, & they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”

**Lk. 6:22-23—“Blessed are you when men hate you, And when they exclude you, And revile you, & cast out your name as evil, For the Son of Man’s sake. Rejoice in that day & leap for joy! For indeed your reward is great in heaven, For in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.”

Jn. 16:22-24—““Therefore you now have sorrow; but I will see you again & your heart will rejoice, & your joy no one will take from you. And in that day you will ask Me nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you. Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, & you will receive, that your joy may be full.”

**Acts 20:22-24—[Paul to the Ephesian elders]““And see, now I[Paul] go bound in the spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the things that will happen to me there, “except that the Holy Spirit testifies in every city, saying that chains & tribulations await me. But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, & the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.”

Rom. 15:13—“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy & peace in believing, that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Gal. 5:22-25—“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions & desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

Col 1:9-14—“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, & to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom & spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work & increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience & longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness & conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”

Heb. 10:32-34—“But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches & tribulations, & partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; for you had compassion on me in my chains, & joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better & an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven.”
