Summary: The title says it all... What happens when a believer has an intense burden for the salvation of a loved one.

Having A Burden For Your Family

Mark 5:21-24; 35-42

If you have children… you care about meeting their needs.

There are:

1) Physical Needs

2) Emotional Needs

3) Financial Needs

4) Spiritual Needs

Some of you have elderly parents and you desire to meet their needs and make sure they are properly cared for

Some have the task of caring for grandchildren and you make them your priority,

We work to provide for our loved ones.

We sacrifice our own desires to care for our family.

We have a burden to see that they have everything they need and most of what they want.

1) Physical Needs:

We protect them from things that would harm them

We make sure they have food

2) Emotional Needs:

We encourage them

We comfort them when they are hurting

3) Financial Needs:

We ensure that they have clothes, shoes & shelter

4) Spiritual Needs:

We teach them the bible

We lead them spiritually

We set an example for them to follow

Unfortunately, there are many who put plenty of emphasis on the Physical, Emotional & financial needs but neglect the spiritual welfare of their children.

Some are more concerned with their child being:popular than spiritual, they would rather have their child be a good athlete than a godly young man or young woman. They spend more time teaching them life lessons and never the Word of God. They work hard to give them temporal material goods and forsaking the eternal

With that being said, fortunately there are many who truly have a burden to see their children, parents, siblings and extended families come to know Jesus

Our text for today tells of a Father, who had an extreme burden for his daughter,

Jairus was a “Jewish Leader” who had a 12 year old daughter who was at the point of death.

We see him as he falls at the feet of Jesus and pleads for Jesus to heal his precious daughter.

Jesus had been in the area and His fame began to spread…we are told in v21 (that) Jesus passed over by ship unto the other side, and many people gathered unto him

Why did MANY people gather around Jesus? Why did Jairus seek the help of Jesus? When we look at the scripture we see exactly why:

Jesus Heals A Demon Possessed Man 1:21-39

Jesus Heals A Leper 1:40-45

Jesus Heals A Quadriplegic 2:1-2

Jesus Calms A Raging Storm 4:35-41

Jesus Cures The Man Possessed With A Legion Of Demons 5:1-13

With a reputation of performing all of these miracles Jairus was intrigued by the stories he had heard of Jesus.

I believe that there is much hope and encouragement found in the story of Jairus. He had a burden for his daughter’s physical condition.

Maybe you have a burden for a family members “Spiritual Condition” Let’s take some time and consider the thought “Having A Burden For Your Family”

In Verses 22-23 we see:

I. What Jesus Says About Your Burden v22-40

The Key verse in this story is verse 36 {Jesus} said unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, ONLY BELIEVE!

When Jesus says “Believe” He means more than to think something is possible. He is referring to “Putting your faith in Him” Many of you put your faith in Christ to save you from your sins but you don’t trust Him with the events of your everyday life!

Faith is not as difficult when things are going good, But Jairus is not in a good situation. His Daughter is dying. His friends thought Jesus was a lunatic. Jairus was at a point of helplessness. Even as he reaches Jesus, he is interrupted as “the woman with the issue of blood” touches the hem of Jesus’ garment.

You may be in a similar situation with your burden for the spiritual condition of your loved one,

Things may seem hopeless, if so hearken to the words of Jesus ...ONLY BELIEVE!!!

A. When Difficulty Comes, BELIEVE! V22-23

1) The Humbleness Involved - v22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, v23a And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death:

Involved in this burden for your family member is humbleness.

Jairus humbly bowed himself at the feet of Jesus to make his request known,

If you have a burden, you must humble yourself at the feet of Jesus ...Bow before Him and share that burden with Him

We are encouraged to do this in the scriptures:

a) Peter mentioned this - 1 Peter 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

b) Jesus mentioned this - Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

2) The Helplessness Involved – v23b pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. 24 And Jesus went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him.

There is a difference in thinking “it would be nice to know that my loved one is saved” and realizing that “my loved one is lost and headed for hell”

Jairus was helpless! If there was any other option I am sure he would have taken it! Time was running out and he needed help immediately!

Many times we address the fact that sinners think they have plenty of time to make things right, some times we are just as guilty of procrastination. We will say “I will witness to him eventually” ...“When the time is right!”

We must have the sense of urgency that Jairus had time is short and eternity hangs in the balance.

i. When Difficulty Comes, Believe!

II. When Devastation Comes, BELIEVE! - v35 ¶While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue's house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

Jairus made his plea and then hears devastating news “Thy daughter is dead”

You may have been praying for a loved one for years. Things may take a devastating turn.

Rebellion

Terminal illness

Drug addiction

Alcohol abuse

Maybe you find that they are:

Homosexual

Involved in a cult

Profess to be an atheist

There are many situations that can seem devastating. Even when things look the darkest, Jesus says “ONLY BELIEVE!:

i. When Difficulty Comes, Believe!

ii. When Devastation Comes Believe!

III. When Doubt Comes, BELIEVE! - v37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. 38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. 39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth. 40 And they laughed him to scorn.

Jesus takes Peter, James & John, they go to Jairus’ house. Jesus says that she is not dead

Those present“laughed at him to scorn (they laughed in His face)

They saw the girl, they knew she was dead

They doubted the power of our Savior

When you look at the loved one you are burdened for

When you see their circumstances

You too may doubt that Jesus can/will answer your prayer

You may even doubt that He has heard your prayer

You may feel hopeless, you may doubt

Jesus says “ONLY BELIEVE!”

We are often guilty of forgetting Jesus’ past workings in our lives. In the moment, Jairus may have forgotten that this was the Man who:

Cast out demons

Healed the paralyzed man

Calmed the storm

We have heard “What Jesus Says About Your Burden” Now we move from What Jesus Says About Your Burden to:

II. What Jesus Does About Your Burden v23-42

Jesus does not just provide empty hope. He presents action! He didn’t Just tell Jairus to “Believe” He gave him something to believe in!

Notice:

A. He Hears Your Prayers - v23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live.

Jesus heard Jairus. Notice that though Jesus heard him immediately he did not act immediately. As this was happening Jesus was interrupted ...There was a woman in the crowd who: Had suffered with “an issue of blood” For 12 years ...She had suffered much ...Spent all she had ...Looked everywhere for a healing

Jesus took time with this woman. I am sure Jairus couldn’t care less about this woman’s disease. He was concerned with his daughter’s condition

This may be the case with your situation, not that Jesus is too busy for you but that He has heard, but the time is not right

You can rest assured that when you have a burden He Hears Your Prayers - Not only does He Hear Your Prayers

B. He Calms Your Fears - v36b he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

Jairus may have experienced some skepticism. Especially after he learned that his daughter was dead. He went from having a sick daughter to a deceased daughter

You may be in one of those situations we mentioned earlier that seems hopeless

Things may have taken a drastic turn

You have been sharing your burden with Jesus for many years

Even in the midst of the darkest day, Jesus can and will calm your fears ...BE NOT AFRAID, only believe

What Does Jesus Do About Your Burden?

He Hears Your Prayers

He Calms Your Fears… and:

C. He Removes Your Doubts - v40 But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. 41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. 42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

There was surely some doubt in Jairus’ heart. There was obviously some doubt among those present “And they laughed him to scorn”

The girl was dead, hope was dim

Jesus takes her hand and says

“Arise” and she arose and “walked”

We are told that those present “were astonished with a great astonishment”

Can you image the joy and excitement of Jairus? The most precious person in his life had been taken away, NOW SHE IS RESTORED!!

You may have a loved one who:

Has never been born again ...or one who has made a professionof faith and has turned from the Lord

You have suffered many sleepless nights

You shed many tears

You have prayed many prayers.

It may seem that there is no hope!

I encourage you to:

i. Listen To What Jesus Says About Your Burden!

ii. Look At What Jesus Does About Your Burden!

There are many of us here today because a loved one called out to Jesus on our behalf because they had a burden for us.Jesus heard their prayer and reached down and touched their loved one!

Do you have a burden for a loved one today? “ONLY BELIEVE” - - - If not WHY?

Maybe you are here and you are lost, you have loved ones who are praying for you. They have witnessed to you for years. Friend, Jesus can and will save your soul and give you eternal life.
