Continue

2 Timothy 3:14 (Amplified Bible)

But as for you, continue to hold to the things that you have learned and of which you are convinced, knowing from whom you learned [them],

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Men will not put up with sound doctrine

"For the time is coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome instruction,"

Sound means well, uncorrupt, wholesome. Doctrine means instruction, learning, teaching.

Ezekiel 12:2 (Amplified Bible)

Son of man, you dwell in the midst of the house of the rebellious, who have eyes to see and see not, who have ears to hear and hear not, for they are a rebellious house.

They lack spiritual insight. Yes, they have all the organs that can appreciate and accommodate physical things they can see, but can't be used with spiritual things which are invisible to them.

Jeremiah 6:10 (Amplified Bible)

To whom shall I [Jeremiah] speak and give warning, that they may hear? Behold, their ears are uncircumcised [never brought into covenant with God or consecrated to His service], and they cannot hear or obey. Behold, the word of the Lord has become to them a reproach and the object of their scorn; they have no delight in it.

Isaiah 6:10 (Amplified Bible)

Make the heart of this people fat; and make their ears heavy and shut their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and turn again and be healed.

GOD promises if we see and appreciate Him, He will heal us. We need to come by faith to Him not our physical senses.

Hebrews 11:6 (Amplified Bible)

But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].

To receive from GOD is still by faith.

B. Evil desires followed

"but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying],"

1 Corinthians 10:6 (Amplified Bible)

Now these things are examples (warnings and admonitions) for us not to desire or crave or covet or lust after evil and carnal things as they did.

When it is evil desires coming from humans, it's called "lust after" but if coming from GOD, it's a stretching out after, reaching forth. It all means that when we fall into our own evil desires, it's just lust not real want or love, but when the desire came from GOD, it allows us to stretch forth, meaning to upgrade, or to better oneself just to reach that desire.

Ephesians 2:3 (Amplified Bible)

Among these we as well as you once lived and conducted ourselves in the passions of our flesh [our behavior governed by our corrupt and sensual nature], obeying the impulses of the flesh and the thoughts of the mind [our cravings dictated by our senses and our dark imaginings]. We were then by nature children of [God’s] wrath and heirs of [His] indignation, like the rest of mankind.

James 4:2 (Amplified Bible)

You are jealous and covet [what others have] and your desires go unfulfilled; [so] you become murderers. [To hate is to murder as far as your hearts are concerned.] You burn with envy and anger and are not able to obtain [the gratification, the contentment, and the happiness that you seek], so you fight and war. You do not have, because you do not ask.

Compare James 4:2 with 1 Timothy 3:1 to compare man's evil desire with GODly desires.

1 Timothy 3:1 (Amplified Bible)

THE SAYING is true and irrefutable: If any man [eagerly] seeks the office of bishop (superintendent, overseer), he desires an excellent task (work).

C. They will gather teachers that will say what they want

"they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable number,"

It's reverse or in the opposite. Teachers should be the one to gather students around them, because they teach something and students learn at the same time. But with these people, they "pay" or "bribe" teachers to gather around them and only "teach" (say) what they wanted to hear.

Isaiah 5:24 (Amplified Bible)

Therefore, as the tongue of fire devours the stubble, and as the dry grass sinks down in the flame, so their root shall be like rottenness and their blossom shall go up like fine dust—because they have rejected and cast away the law and the teaching of the Lord of hosts and have not believed but have treated scornfully and have despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Zechariah 7:12 (Amplified Bible)

Yes, they made their hearts as an adamant stone or diamond point, lest they should hear the law and the words which the Lord of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore there came great wrath from the Lord of hosts.

Isaiah 30:12-13 (Amplified Bible)

Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel: Because you despise and spurn this [My] word and trust in cunning and oppression, in crookedness and perverseness, and rely on them,

Therefore this iniquity and guilt will be to you like a broken section of a high wall, bulging out and ready [at some distant day] to fall, whose crash will [then] come suddenly and swiftly, in an instant.

D. They will turn to myths away from the Truth

"And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and man-made fictions."

Theaters are filled with super heroes that are myths and man-made fictions because people are tired of hearing and hearing the gospel they rejected it at once and will even hear false stories just to replace the gospel. A very tragic sight!

John 14:6 (Amplified Bible)

Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me.

They thought that they only are rejecting a doctrine or a christian doctrine but instead little they know, they have already rejected the Savior, because the Truth is not a thing, it's a GOD-Man Person, that is the LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Zechariah 7:11 (Amplified Bible)

But they refused to listen and turned a rebellious and stubborn shoulder and made heavy and dull their ears that they might not hear.

Acts 28:26 (Amplified Bible)

Go to this people and say to them, You will indeed hear and hear with your ears but will not understand, and you will indeed look and look with your eyes but will not see [not perceive, have knowledge of or become acquainted with what you look at, at all].

Still in GOD's Mercy and Love, GOD wanted them to hear the gospel over and over again but they rejected it.

Matthew 13:15 (Amplified Bible)

For this nation’s heart has grown gross (fat and dull), and their ears heavy and difficult of hearing, and their eyes they have tightly closed, lest they see and perceive with their eyes, and hear and comprehend the sense with their ears, and grasp and understand with their heart, and turn and I should heal them.

Even a whole nation, Israel rejected their Messiah.

John 1:11 (Amplified Bible)

He came to that which belonged to Him [to His own—His domain, creation, things, world], and they who were His own did not receive Him and did not welcome Him.

IX. CONCLUSION:

In the last days, if we don't preach GOD's Words, (a) people will no longer listen to the Truth, (b) they will follow their evil desires instead, (c) they will gather teachers that will only say what they want, and (d) they will listen to fables, myths, or just any worthless stories but with no truth in it and will reject the Truth- the LORD JESUS CHRIST.
