IV. TEXT:

Mark 11:13 (Amplified Bible)

11:13 And seeing in the distance a fig tree [covered] with leaves, He went to see if He could find any [fruit] on it [for in the fig tree the fruit appears at the same time as the leaves]. But when He came up to it, He found nothing but leaves, for the fig season had not yet come.

V. THESIS:

We stick to the Branch and we'll bear fruit without our efforts.

VI. TITLE:

Found nothing but leaves

Study of Mark 11

B. Date written: 58 B.C.

C. Purpose: To present JESUS of Nazareth as GOD's Suffering Servant, the Redeemer of the world

D. To whom written: Roman or Gentile Christians

E. Main Theme: CHRIST is the tireless servant of GOD and humanity.

F. Key word: Immediately

G. Key verse: Mark 10:45

Mark 10:45 (Amplified Bible)

10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to have service rendered to Him, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for (instead of) many.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

Fig tree represents fruitless Israel, the whole vineyard that is representing Nation of Israel.

Luke 13:6-9 (Amplified Bible)

13:6 And He told them this parable: A certain man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it, but did not find [any].

13:7 So he said to the vinedresser, See here! For these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue also to use up the ground [to deplete the soil, intercept the sun, and take up room]?

13:8 But he replied to him, Leave it alone, sir, [just] this one more year, till I dig around it and put manure [on the soil].

13:9 Then perhaps it will bear fruit after this; but if not, you can cut it down and out.

Isaiah 5:7 (Amplified Bible)

5:7 For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah His pleasant planting [the plant of His delight]. And He looked for justice, but behold, [He saw] oppression and bloodshed; [He looked] for righteousness (for uprightness and right standing with God), but behold, [He heard] a cry [of oppression and distress]!

Fig tree leaves, leaves or a leaf represents our own being doing good works to be approved by GOD.

Genesis 3:7 (Amplified Bible)

3:7 Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves apronlike girdles.

Isaiah 64:6 (Amplified Bible)

64:6 For we have all become like one who is unclean [ceremonially, like a leper], and all our righteousness (our best deeds of rightness and justice) is like filthy rags or a polluted garment; we all fade like a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away [far from God’s favor, hurrying us toward destruction].

Jeremiah 17:7-8 (Amplified Bible)

17:7 [Most] blessed is the man who believes in, trusts in, and relies on the Lord, and whose hope and confidence the Lord is.

17:8 For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters that spreads out its roots by the river; and it shall not see and fear when heat comes; but its leaf shall be green. It shall not be anxious and full of care in the year of drought, nor shall it cease yielding fruit.

A. From a distance, a fig tree full of leaves

"And seeing in the distance a fig tree [covered] with leaves,"

Matthew 21:19 (Amplified Bible)

21:19 And as He saw one single leafy fig tree above the roadside, He went to it but He found nothing but leaves on it [seeing that in the fig tree the fruit appears at the same time as the leaves]. And He said to it, Never again shall fruit grow on you! And the fig tree withered up at once.

Leaves from a fig tree would signify a presence of fruit. Being a leafy fig tree, it must contain lots of fruits for JESUS and the disciples to eat.

Since FATHER GOD owned the vineyard it would have been usual for the FATHER to require the fruits from the laborer.

Mark 12:2-8 (Amplified Bible)

12:2 When the season came, he sent a bond servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard.

12:3 But they took him and beat him and sent him away without anything.

12:4 Again he sent to them another bond servant, and they stoned him and wounded him in the head and treated him shamefully [sending him away with insults].

12:5 And he sent another, and that one they killed; then many others—some they beat, and some they put to death.

12:6 He had still one left [to send], a beloved son; last of all he sent him to them, saying, They will respect my son.

12:7 But those tenants said to one another, Here is the heir; come on, let us put him to death, and [then] the inheritance will be ours.

12:8 And they took him and killed him, and threw [his body] outside the vineyard.

John 15:1 (Amplified Bible)

15:1 I AM the True Vine, and My Father is the Vinedresser.

B. CHRIST went to see if there's any fruit on it

"He went to see if He could find any [fruit] on it [for in the fig tree the fruit appears at the same time as the leaves]."

John 15:5-7 (Amplified Bible)

15:5 I am the Vine; you are the branches. Whoever lives in Me and I in him bears much (abundant) fruit. However, apart from Me [cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing.

15:6 If a person does not dwell in Me, he is thrown out like a [broken-off] branch, and withers; such branches are gathered up and thrown into the fire, and they are burned.

15:7 If you live in Me [abide vitally united to Me] and My words remain in you and continue to live in your hearts, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you.

Fruits here signified our "answered prayers" because of our connection with JESUS CHRIST. These fruits are products of our relationship with our LORD and SAVIOR, but the LORD JESUS CHRIST could not see any product of the relationship because in the first place, there's no relationship to begin with.

John 1:10-11 (Amplified Bible)

1:10 He came into the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him [did not know Him].

1:11 He came to that which belonged to Him [to His own—His domain, creation, things, world], and they who were His own did not receive Him and did not welcome Him.

There's rejection of the Branch, so there's no fruit.

Psalms 118:22 (Amplified Bible)

118:22 The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.

Matthew 21:42-43 (Amplified Bible)

21:42 Jesus asked them, Have you never read in the Scriptures: The very Stone which the builders rejected and threw away has become the Cornerstone; this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?

21:43 I tell you, for this reason the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce the fruits of it.

The Kingdom of GOD was rejected by the Jews, so it was given to the Gentiles who will produce fruits for it.

Acts 15:16-18 (Amplified Bible)

15:16 After this I will come back, and will rebuild the house of David, which has fallen; I will rebuild its [very] ruins, and I will set it up again,

15:17 So that the rest of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles upon whom My name has been invoked,

15:18 Says the Lord, Who has been making these things known from the beginning of the world.

Ezekiel 17:22-24 (Amplified Bible)

17:22 Thus says the Lord God: I Myself will take a twig from the lofty top of the cedar and will set it out; I will crop off from the topmost of its young twigs a tender one and will plant it upon a mountain high and exalted.

17:23 On the mountain height of Israel will I plant it, that it may bring forth boughs and bear fruit and be a noble cedar, and under it shall dwell all birds of every feather; in the shade of its branches they shall nestle and find rest.

17:24 And all the trees of the field shall know (understand and realize) that I the Lord have brought low the high tree, have exalted the low tree, have dried up the green tree, and have made the dry tree flourish. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.

The low tree happened to be the Gentiles and the High tree were the Jews.

C. CHRIST found nothing but leaves

"But when He came up to it, He found nothing but leaves, for the fig season had not yet come."

It's all a facade, a make-believe.

Mark 7:6-8 (Amplified Bible)

7:6 But He said to them, Excellently and truly [so that there will be no room for blame] did Isaiah prophesy of you, the pretenders and hypocrites, as it stands written: These people [constantly] honor Me with their lips, but their hearts hold off and are far distant from Me.

7:7 In vain (fruitlessly and without profit) do they worship Me, ordering and teaching [to be obeyed] as doctrines the commandments and precepts of men.

7:8 You disregard and give up and ask to depart from you the commandment of God and cling to the tradition of men [keeping it carefully and faithfully].

The hypocrites and those who trusted themselves will never see the fruits of GOD given to them unless they accept it by faith in the finished work of CHRIST on Calvary.

Matthew 23:13 (Amplified Bible)

23:13 But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, pretenders (hypocrites)! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in men’s faces; for you neither enter yourselves, nor do you allow those who are about to go in to do so.

Luke 11:39-41 (Amplified Bible)

11:39 But the Lord said to him, Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside you yourselves are full of greed and robbery and extortion and malice and wickedness.

11:40 You senseless (foolish, stupid) ones [acting without reflection or intelligence]! Did not He Who made the outside make the inside also?

11:41 But [dedicate your inner self and] give as donations to the poor of those things which are within [of inward righteousness] and behold, everything is purified and clean for you.

Jeremiah 17:5-8 (Amplified Bible)

17:5 Thus says the Lord: Cursed [with great evil] is the strong man who trusts in and relies on frail man, making weak [human] flesh his arm, and whose mind and heart turn aside from the Lord.

17:6 For he shall be like a shrub or a person naked and destitute in the desert; and he shall not see any good come, but shall dwell in the parched places in the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.

IX. CONCLUSION:

The Vine Dresser, our FATHER GOD, will take care of the branches, fruits, and it's leaves as we seek and trust in GOD alone.
