A. If we say humans
"if we say 'humans,'"
Humans are "anthropos" in the Greek meaning men, countenance of men, mankind, human being, manfaced, people.
These people are afraid of people.

Remember Abraham, when he's not yet mature in his relationship with GOD, feared men, and after fear, it opened him up to lies. He even lied about his real relationship with his wife. When our relationship with GOD is not right, our relationship with men will not be right as well.
Genesis 20:11 (The Message)
20:11 Abraham said, "I just assumed that there was no fear of God in this place and that they'd kill me to get my wife.
The teachers of the law, scribes, chief priests and elders in JESUS's day are afraid of the people because they don't have relationship with GOD. If they have correct relationship with GOD, then they will recognize and accept JESUS as GOD.

20:19 The religion scholars and high priests wanted to lynch him on the spot, but they were intimidated by public opinion. They knew the story was about them.

22:2 The high priests and religion scholars were looking for a way to do away with Jesus but, fearful of the people, they were also looking for a way to cover their tracks.
