Summary: To show that Grace is to be received by faith as GOD's Gift.

I. EXORDIUM:

Do you receive GOD's Grace?

Ice breaker: Bring a large needle. Ask the help of a brother that if he can "fake" a sound of pain for other to hear and then show them the large needle. Line them all up in a straight line all facing you. Let them all close their eyes but for the one brother you've asked a help from. Now, while they all close their eyes, let the brother pretend that you're pricking him and let him cry out loud, see other's expression before doing so with them but pretend only. To add to the effect, bring alcohol, betadine and lots of cottons and tissues for the blood. :)

II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:

Believers

III. OBJECTIVES:

To show that Grace is to be received by faith as GOD's Gift.

IV. TEXT:

1 Corinthians 15:56 (New International Version)

15:56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

V. THESIS:

Receive 100% GOD's Grace as Gift from GOD.

VI. TITLE:

Law -> Sin -> Death

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: Apostle Paul

B. Date written: 56 A.D.

C. Purpose: To purify the church from divisions and immorality.

D. To whom written: Corinthian church

E. Main theme: Unified and pure living, in the midst of an impure world

F. Key word: love

G. Key verses:

1 Corinthians 1:12-17 (New International Version)

1:12 What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas"; still another, "I follow Christ."

1:13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul?

1:14 I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,

1:15 so no one can say that you were baptized into my name.

1:16 (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.)

1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

1 Corinthians 3:4-7 (New International Version)

3:4 For when one says, "I follow Paul," and another, "I follow Apollos," are you not mere men?

3:5 What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe--as the Lord has assigned to each his task.

3:6 I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.

3:7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.

1 Corinthians 3:21-22 (New International Version)

3:21 So then, no more boasting about men! All things are yours,

3:22 whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future--all are yours,

1 Corinthians 4:6-7 (New International Version)

4:6 Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is written." Then you will not take pride in one man over against another.

4:7 For who makes you different from anyone else? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as though you did not?

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. The sting of death is sin

"The sting of death is sin,"

1. Sting is "kentron" (noun:neuter) in Greek meaning:

a. a sting, as that of bees, scorpions, locusts. Since animals wound by their sting and even cause death, Paul attributes death, personified as a sting, i.e. a deadly weapon

b. an iron goad, for urging on oxen, horses and other beasts of burden

2. Death is "thanatos" (noun:masculine) in Greek meaning:

a. the death of the body

b. metaphorically, the loss of that life which alone is worthy of the name

c. the miserable state of the wicked dead in hell

d. in the widest sense, death comprising all the miseries arising from sin, as well physical death as the loss of a life consecrated to God and blessed in him on earth, to be followed by wretchedness in hell

3. Sin is "hamartia" (noun:feminine) in Greek meaning:

a. that which is done wrong, an offence, a violation of the divine law in thought or in act

b. collectively, the complex or aggregate of sins committed either by a single person or by many

Not believing and trusting in JESUS will cause people to die in their sins:

John 8:24 (Amplified Bible)

8:24 That is why I told you that you will die in (under the curse of) your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He [Whom I claim to be—if you do not adhere to, trust in, and rely on Me], you will die in your sins.

People work for sin all their lives and they get paid for by death, but Life is GOD's gift, as contrasted from death, you have to work, labor, toil for it, but you get automatically life from GOD if you accept JESUS.

Romans 6:23 (Amplified Bible)

6:23 For the wages which sin pays is death, but the [bountiful] free gift of God is eternal life through (in union with) Jesus Christ our Lord.

Romans 6:23 (The Message)

6:23 Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God's gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.

We are all doomed to hell because of Adam but because of CHRIST, the second Adam we enjoy extravagant eternal life here on earth.

Romans 5:17 (The Message)

5:17 If death got the upper hand through one man's wrongdoing, can you imagine the breathtaking recovery life makes, sovereign life, in those who grasp with both hands this wildly extravagant life-gift, this grand setting-everything-right, that the one man Jesus Christ provides?

Those without CHRIST are all dead because they were all stunged by sin if they are a human being born into this world because of Adam. If we are to observe the gender of these two: death is masculine and sin is feminine, we can conclude that they are really meant for each other as partners in crime, Sin and death, Sin loves death.

Acts 9:5 (Amplified Bible)

9:5 And Saul said, Who are You, Lord? And He said, I am Jesus, Whom you are persecuting. It is dangerous and it will turn out badly for you to keep kicking against the goad [to offer vain and perilous resistance].

Acts 26:14 (Amplified Bible)

26:14 And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice in the Hebrew tongue saying to me, Saul, Saul, why do you continue to persecute Me [to harass and trouble and molest Me]? It is dangerous and turns out badly for you to keep kicking against the goads [to keep offering vain and perilous resistance].

a. To affect with sharp pain; to sting with remorse.

When they heard this, they were pricked in their hearts. Acts 2. Psa 73.

Acts 2:37 (Amplified Bible)

2:37 Now when they heard this they were stung (cut) to the heart, and they said to Peter and the rest of the apostles (special messengers), Brethren, what shall we do?

Psalms 73:21 (Amplified Bible)

73:21 For my heart was grieved, embittered, and in a state of ferment, and I was pricked in my heart [as with the sharp fang of an adder].

Romans 7:4 (Amplified Bible)

7:4 Likewise, my brethren, you have undergone death as to the Law through the [crucified] body of Christ, so that now you may belong to Another, to Him Who was raised from the dead in order that we may bear fruit for God.

Romans 7:6 (Amplified Bible)

7:6 But now we are discharged from the Law and have terminated all intercourse with it, having died to what once restrained and held us captive. So now we serve not under [obedience to] the old code of written regulations, but [under obedience to the promptings] of the Spirit in newness [of life].

Romans 7:9-11 (Amplified Bible)

7:9 Once I was alive, but quite apart from and unconscious of the Law. But when the commandment came, sin lived again and I died (was sentenced by the Law to death).

7:10 And the very legal ordinance which was designed and intended to bring life actually proved [to mean to me] death.

7:11 For sin, seizing the opportunity and getting a hold on me [by taking its incentive] from the commandment, beguiled and entrapped and cheated me, and using it [as a weapon], killed me.

B. The power of sin is the law

"and the power of sin is the law."

1. Strength or power came from the Greek word "dunamis" (noun:feminine) meaning:

a. strength power, ability

it's like:

- power consisting in or resting upon armies, forces, hosts

- the power and influence which belong to riches and wealth

- power for performing miracles

2. Law came from the Greek word "nomos" (noun:masculine) meaning:

a. anything established, anything received by usage, a custom, a law, a command

- a law or rule producing a state approved of God

ex. Mosaic Law

The gender of strength or power is feminine and the gender of law is masculine, they go together, strength or power and law, strength or power loves death. That's why we don't impose our strength or power when we invite, we just invite people to church that's about it, it's like an announcement but whether they go or not, it's their own decisions, repeating it again might impose our strength or power over them and they end up experiencing GOD based on the law, rather than experiencing GOD by grace.

Romans 4:15 (Amplified Bible)

4:15 For the Law results in [divine] wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression [of it either].

Romans 5:13 (The Message)

5:13 That sin disturbed relations with God in everything and everyone, but the extent of the disturbance was not clear until God spelled it out in detail to Moses. So death, this huge abyss separating us from God, dominated the landscape from Adam to Moses.

Galatians 3:10-13 (The Message)

3:10 And that means that anyone who tries to live by his own effort, independent of God, is doomed to failure. Scripture backs this up: "Utterly cursed is every person who fails to carry out every detail written in the Book of the law."

3:11 The obvious impossibility of carrying out such a moral program should make it plain that no one can sustain a relationship with God that way. The person who lives in right relationship with God does it by embracing what God arranges for him. Doing things for God is the opposite of entering into what God does for you. Habakkuk had it right: "The person who believes God, is set right by God—and that's the real life."

3:12 Rule-keeping does not naturally evolve into living by faith, but only perpetuates itself in more and more rule-keeping, a fact observed in Scripture: "The one who does these things [rule-keeping]continues to live by them."

3:13 Christ redeemed us from that self-defeating, cursed life by absorbing it completely into himself. Do you remember the Scripture that says, "Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree"? That is what happened when Jesus was nailed to the Cross: He became a curse, and at the same time dissolved the curse.

IX. CONCLUSION:

We are already dead to the law and sin. We are no longer under the law but under grace. Receive 100% GOD's Grace as Gift from GOD.

Galatians 5:4 (New International Version)

5:4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (New International Version)

2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--

2:9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

Romans 6:14 (Amplified Bible)

6:14 For sin shall not [any longer] exert dominion over you, since now you are not under Law [as slaves], but under grace [as subjects of God’s favor and mercy].
