Message Point: We are to care for the poor.

Focus Passage: Matthew 26:6-13

Supplemental Passage: For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, 'You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.' (Deu 15:11)

Introduction: Wagoner City: Median income - $34,880 (OK - $44,891) Below poverty – 23.3% (OK 16.6%) According to US Census, people in Wagoner have an income deficit of nearly $12,000. I. The Butchered Bible Version

a. Some imply that since Jesus took the focus off of the poor and on to Him, we don’t have to care for the poor

b. Some say that “the poor will always be with you” implies that there is nothing to be done

II. The Verse in Context with Intent

a. The meaning of this verse is clear in context

b. Jesus was taking the focus off of the abstract and placing in on the “here and now”

III. Implications and Application

a. We must care for the poor by helping and encouraging

b. We must guard the poor from being abused
