DEMONSTRATING YOUR POWER SOURCE-II—1Corinthians 2:1-16

Attention:

Black-belt in Karaoke

While attending college, a young lady worked evenings at a retail store. On slow nights her co-worker Susan would often sing along with the radio while the two of them did paperwork or restocked merchandise.

One evening as the manager was leaving I expressed my concern to him about our safety, being two women working alone at night.

"Oh, you'll be fine," he said, waving of his hand. "If you see anybody who looks suspicious, just warn him that Susan knows karaoke."

Susan's power source was her poor karaoke!

Christians have a Power Source which is continually Demonstrated.

Paul demonstrated/confirmed the Spirit’s power thru his manner of witness to the church at Corinth.

Christians demonstrate/confirm their power source.

ACCESS MATURITY(:6a)

Explanation:(:6a) Wisdom matures/Mature Spiritually

:6(a)—“However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.”

“However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature,”

Though Paul didn’t come “with superiority of speech or of wisdom” at the same time he did “speak wisdom.”

The wisdom Paul spoke was recognized as such only among those who were mature/of full age/perfect/reached their intended point.

This does not mean that they do no growing from that point but only that they have reached a level of comprehension & practice that allows their further growth.

Regardless of man’s general disregard for Paul’s message, that same message was/is regarded as “wisdom” by those who “are mature” in their relationship with God thru Christ.

This concept of “maturity” anticipates 3:1 regarding “carnality” & “babes in Christ.”

1Cor. 3:1—“And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual people but as to carnal, as to babes in Christ.”

Maturity accepts & determines wisdom by God’s revelation & not thru seemingly ‘probing’ speculations outside of God’s revealed will.

?Are you “Mature”(spiritual) in Christ? OR do you call/accept religious duty as Maturity?

“Wisdom”2X(See :1, 4, 5, 7, 13—Thruout)—sofia—1) Wisdom, broad & full of intelligence; used of the knowledge of very diverse matters—1a) The wisdom which belongs to men, 1b) Supreme intelligence, such as belongs to God. Gnwsiv denotes knowledge by itself, sofia denotes wisdom as exhibited in action, gnwsiv applies chiefly to the apprehension of truths, sofia adds the power of reasoning about them & tracing their relationships. Sofia denotes a "mental excellence of the highest sense", to details. Sofia is certainly the highest word of all these[fronhsiv, gnwsiv, & epignwsiv]. It is properly wisdom. It denotes mental excellence in the highest & fullest sense, expressing an attitude as well as an act of the mind. It comprehends knowledge & implies goodness, including the striving after the highest ends, as well as the using of the best means for their attainment. It is never ascribed to any one but God & good men, except in a plainly ironical sense. Strong—Wisdom(higher or lower, worldly or spiritual).

“Mature”—teleiov—Adj.—1) Brought to its end, finished; 2) Wanting nothing necessary to completeness; 3) Perfect; 4) That which is perfect. Strong—from telov[properly, the point aimed at as a limit, i.e. (by implication)The conclusion of an act or state (termination [literally, figuratively or indefinitely], Result[immediate, ultimate or prophetic], Purpose);] Complete(in various applications of labor, growth, mental & moral character, etc.); neuter(as noun, with o)--Completeness.

Argumentation:

**Eph 4:11-16—“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, & some pastors & teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith & of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to & fro & carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head--Christ-- from whom the whole body, joined & knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.”

Jer. 32:38-40—“‘They shall be My people, & I will be their God; then I will give them one heart & one way, that they may fear Me forever, for the good of them & their children after them. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put My fear in their hearts so that they will not depart from Me.”

Though this is God’s promise to Israel, the Church in Christ can definitely apply it to themselves.

Zeph. 3:6-9—““I have cut off nations, Their fortresses are devastated; I have made their streets desolate, With none passing by. Their cities are destroyed; There is no one, no inhabitant. I said, ‘Surely you will fear Me, You will receive instruction’-- So that her dwelling would not be cut off, Despite everything for which I punished her. But they rose early & corrupted all their deeds. “Therefore wait for Me,” says the LORD, “Until the day I rise up for plunder; My determination is to gather the nations To My assembly of kingdoms, To pour on them My indignation, All my fierce anger; All the earth shall be devoured With the fire of My jealousy. For then I will restore to the peoples a pure language, That they all may call on the name of the LORD, To serve Him with one accord.”

**1Cor. 1:10—“Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, & that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind & in the same judgment.”

Php. 2:1-2—“Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection & mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.” **Php. 3:7-14—“But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, & count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ & be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him & the power of His resurrection, & the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind & reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Eccl. 11:9-10—“Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; Walk in the ways of your heart, And in the sight of your eyes; But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment. Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, And put away evil from your flesh, For childhood & youth are vanity.”

**2Tim. 2:20-22—“But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold & silver, but also of wood & clay, some for honor & some for dishonor. Therefore if anyone cleanses himself from the latter, he will be a vessel for honor, sanctified & useful for the Master, prepared for every good work. Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

ACCESS DEFINITIVE(God’s) WISDOM(:6b-9)

Explanation:(:6b-9) Hiding place/Particular/Certain

:6(b)—“However, we speak wisdom among those who are mature, yet not the wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing.”

What this Definitive “Wisdom” is NOT:

Paul’s was not a message birthed thru “the wisdom of this age”(the “age” surrendered to self & Satan). Neither was/is there, in Paul’s revelation, the “wisdom” “of the rulers of this age.”

Such worldliness & regard for a worldly concept & understanding of ‘power’ has been & will continue to be rendered devoid of actual power(:5). God’s past, present, & future will,—His objective truth—secures the world’s feebleness/anemia for all time.

The world’s attempt at “wisdom,” along with its key players, always ends in futility.

“Every age of the world has a conceit of its own...”—RWP

The nature of this wisdom Paul speaks is different from worldly wisdom(of men).

It is a wisdom which is not “of this age”(:6). Nor is it a wisdom of “the rulers of this age”(:6-8). Thus it is not a “wisdom” to be found in any particular age, even thought the mystery(of salvation in Christ) has been uncovered.

The “rulers of this age” are “coming to nothing”/passing away.

Thus the “wisdom” of these “rulers” will die with them, for such “wisdom” cannot stand the test of time & eternity.

Some current “Rulers”:

People(the world at large)—Determiners of popular thought.

Secular science—Not ‘bad’ versus ‘good’, but it is narrowly limited due to its choosing its movement WITHOUT the mind & wisdom of God. Its equations are limited by ‘natural’ thought.

Ideas proffered—Popular thought aside from God’s thought.

“Wisdom”2X(See :1, 4, 5, 7, 13—Thruout)— sofia—

“Age”2X(See :7, 8)—aiwn—1) For ever, an unbroken age, perpetuity of time, eternity; 2) The worlds, universe; 3) Period of time, age. Aiwn is usually better expressed by age, it is the world at a given time, a particular period in the world's history. Aiwn means the spirit of the age, often in an unfavorable sense. The plural of aiwn is found in Heb 1:2 11:3, where it denotes the worlds, apparently in reference to space rather than time. Strong—properly--An age; by extension--Perpetuity(also past); by implication--The world; specially(Jewish) a Messianic period(present or future).

“Rulers”(See :8)—arcwn—1) A ruler, commander, chief, leader. Strong—A first(in rank or power).

English—a prefix— ‘Arch-’ as in arch-enemy or arch-nemesis. Or as a suffix in ‘over-arching.’

“Coming to Nothing/Come to nought/Passing away”—katargew—1) To render idle, unemployed, inactivate, inoperative—1a) To cause a person or thing to have no further efficiency, 1b) To deprive of force, influence, power; 2) To cause to cease, put an end to, do away with, annul, abolish. Strong—To be(render) entirely idle(useless), literally or figuratively.

:7—“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory,”

When I accept only the “wisdom” which proceeds from & is associated with God alone.

Paul, other apostles & Christians(“we”) share this “wisdom of God” which is encapsulated “in a mystery.” It is God’s “mystery” due to its specifics being previously “hidden.” Though being “hidden,” the Gospel of Christ was yet testified of in the Law & prophets(Lk. 24:27).

God made these things so(mystery of the Gospel), before creation, by His own choosing.

“For our glory” conveys the thought that all these things have intentionally led up to an inward & outward exaltation for the believer thru Christ.

Paul & Sosthenes speak “God’s wisdom.”

God’s wisdom is spoken in a “mystery.”

A mystery is something previously hidden.

God’s wisdom which Paul speaks has been ‘previously’ hidden from our understanding.

God, in His omniscience & providence, predestined that we should receive this wisdom.

He predestined this prior to the creation. Before any of the ages(time) of man’s existence...prior to the existence of anything tangible or intangible.

God predestined this wisdom for the express purpose that we would receive our intended & proper “glory”(God wants the best for us)

Rom. 8:18—“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

Eph. 3:8-13—“To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, & to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities & powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness & access with confidence through faith in Him. Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.”

“Speak”(See :1, 4, 6)—lalew—

“Wisdom”(See :1, 4, 5, 6, 13—Thruout)— sofia—

“Mystery/Secret”—musthrion—1) Hidden thing, secret, mystery; 2) in rabbinic writings, it denotes The mystic or hidden sense. Strong—from a derivative of muw(to shut the mouth); A secret or “mystery”(through the idea of silence imposed by initiation into religious rites).

“Hidden”—apokruptw—1) To hide; 2) Concealing, keeping secret. Strong—To conceal away(i.e. fully); figuratively--To keep secret. Used 6X.

“Ordained/Predestined/Destined”—proorizw—1) To predetermine, decide beforehand; 2) in the NT--Of God decreeing from eternity; 3) To foreordain, appoint beforehand. Strong—To limit in advance, i.e. figuratively--Predetermine. Used 6X.

“Before”—pro—Preposition—1) Before. Strong—a primary preposition; “Fore”, i.e. In front of, prior (figuratively--Superior) to.

“Ages/World/Time began”(See :6, 8)— aiwn—Plural—

“Glory”(See :8)—doxa—1) Opinion, judgment, view; 2) Opinion, estimate, whether good or bad concerning someone; 3) Splendor, brightness—3a) Of the moon, sun, stars, 3b) Magnificence, excellence, preeminence, dignity, grace, 3c) Majesty; 4) A most glorious condition, most exalted state. Strong—Glory(as very apparent), in a wide application(literal or figurative, objective or subjective).

:8—“which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

“None” of those deemed worthy of respect & power(“rulers”) fronted or grasped any of these things(1:20-21). If these worldly “rulers” had declared God’s truth as valid, they would never have “crucified the Lord of glory.”

Jesus is “the Lord” over all that is or has “glory.” In this sense, “glory” is that which carries an inherent magnificence.

God’s wisdom has not been understood by “the rulers of this age.” This does not mean that an individual or even a nation has never understood the Gospel, but that the fundamental/overall focus/mentality/disposition of the age(seated in its rulers) is counter to God’s wisdom.

If they(rulers & subsequent ruling disposition) had understood it, then they would never have “crucified the Lord of glory.”

“The Lord of glory” is the determiner(Lord/Master) of “glory.” He is the determiner, Lord & Master of God’s “glory.”

“The Lord of glory” has been denied by the “rulers” & thus by the populace in favor of their self-imposed glory.

“Rulers/Princes”(See :6)—arcwn—1) A ruler, commander, chief, leader. Strong—A first (in rank or power).

English—a prefix— ‘Arch-’ as in arch-enemy or arch-nemesis. Or as a suffix in ‘over-arching.’

“Age/World”(See :6, 7)— aiwn—

“Knew & Known/Understood”(See :2, 11, 14)—ginwskw—Perfect Active Indicative—1) To learn to know, come to know, get a knowledge of perceive, feel—1a) To become known; 2) To know, understand, perceive, have knowledge of; 3) Jewish idiom for sexual intercourse between a man & a woman; 4) To become acquainted with, to know. Ginwskw is a knowledge grounded on personal experience. Strong—a prolonged form of a primary verb; To “know”(absolutely) in a great variety of applications & with many implications.

“Crucified”(See :6)—staurow—

“Lord”—kuriov—1) He to whom a person or thing belongs, about which he has power of deciding; master, lord. Kuriov has a wider meaning[than despothv], applicable to the various ranks & relations of life & not suggestive of either property or of absolutism. Strong—from kurov(supremacy); Supreme in authority, i.e. (as noun)--Controller; by implication--Mr.(as a respectful title).

“Glory”(See :7)—doxa—

:9—“But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.””

The quote appears to be from Isa. 64:4; 52:15.

Isa. 64:4—“For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him.”

Isa. 52:15—“So shall He sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths at Him; For what had not been told them they shall see, And what they had not heard they shall consider.”

No inherent reasoning ability of man has or ever will bring him to experience the physical & spiritual life God has in store for him, aside from his first “loving” Christ. It is impossible for the lost person to even conceive of the manifestation of God’s favor as their Creator, God, King, Father, & Comforter.

God has revealed in Scripture to His people, things that are not revealed, unheeded, unrecognized, unimagined & undreamed by man. These unrevealed things deal with the future(glory) of God’s people.

“Seen”(See :2—“Know”, 11,& :8, 14—ginwskw)—eidw—

“Heard”—akouw—1) To be endowed with the faculty of hearing, not deaf; 2) To hear—2b) To attend to, consider what is or has been said, 2c) To understand, perceive the sense of what is said; 3) To hear something. Strong—a primary verb; To hear (in various senses).

“Entered into”—anabainw—1) Ascend—1a) To go up, 1b) To rise, mount, be borne up, spring up. Strong—To go up(literally or figuratively).

“Heart/Mind/Conceived”—kardia—1) The heart—1a) That organ in the animal body which is the centre of the circulation of the blood, & hence was regarded as the seat of physical life, 1b) Denotes the centre of all physical & spiritual life, 1c) Of the middle or central or inmost part of anything, even though inanimate. Strong—prolonged from a primary kar(Latin, cor, "heart"); The heart, i.e. figuratively--The thoughts or feelings(mind); also by analogy--The middle.

“Man”(See 3:3)—anyrwpov—1) A human being, whether male or female; 2) indefinitely--Someone, a man, one; 3) in the plural--People; 4) joined with other words, merchantman, etc. Strong—Man-faced, i.e. A human being.

“Prepared”—etoimazw—1) To make ready, Prepare; 2) metaph.—2a) Drawn from the oriental custom of sending on before kings on their journeys persons to level the roads & make them passable, 2b) To prepare the minds of men to give the Messiah a fit reception & secure his blessings

“Love”—agapaw—1) of persons—1a) To welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly; 2) of things—2a) To be well pleased, to be contented at or with a thing. Strong—perhaps from agan(much) [or compare bge[a primitive root; to breathe after, i.e. to love or have inordinate affection or lust(sensually)]]; To love(in a social or moral sense).

Argumentation:

Mat. 10:25-27—““It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, & a servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! “Therefore do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, & hidden that will not be known. “Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; & what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops.”

Col. 3:15-17—“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; & be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching & admonishing one another in psalms & hymns & spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”

**Prov. 2:1-22—“My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge & understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. Then you will understand righteousness & justice, Equity & every good path. When wisdom enters your heart, And knowledge is pleasant to your soul, Discretion will preserve you; Understanding will keep you, To deliver you from the way of evil, From the man who speaks perverse things, From those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; Who rejoice in doing evil, And delight in the perversity of the wicked; Whose ways are crooked, And who are devious in their paths; To deliver you from the immoral woman, From the seductress who flatters with her words, Who forsakes the companion of her youth, And forgets the covenant of her God. For her house leads down to death, And her paths to the dead; None who go to her return, Nor do they regain the paths of life--So you may walk in the way of goodness, And keep to the paths of righteousness. For the upright will dwell in the land, And the blameless will remain in it; But the wicked will be cut off from the earth, And the unfaithful will be uprooted from it.”

**Jn. 5:30-47—““I[Jesus] can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; & My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me. If I bear witness of Myself, My witness is not true. There is another who bears witness of Me, & I know that the witness which He witnesses of Me is true. You[the Jews] have sent to John[the baptist], & he has borne witness to the truth. Yet I do not receive testimony from man, but I say these things that you may be saved. He was the burning & shining lamp, & you were willing for a time to rejoice in his light. But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish--the very works that I do--bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe. You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; & these are they which testify of Me. But you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. I do not receive honor from men. But I know you, that you do not have the love of God in you. I have come in My Father’s name, & you do not receive Me; if another comes in his own name, him you will receive. How can you believe, who receive honor from one another, & do not seek the honor that comes from the only God? Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you--Moses, in whom you trust. For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?””

1Pet. 1:3-16—“Blessed be the God & Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible & undefiled & that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, & glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible & full of glory, receiving the end of your faith--the salvation of your souls. Of this salvation the prophets have inquired & searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ & the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven--things which angels desire to look into. Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, & rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.””
