DEMONSTRATING YOUR POWER SOURCE-IV—1Corinthians 2:1-16

Attention:

Malaysian Airline flight #370:

March 8th, 2014, Malaysian Airline flight #370 disappeared off the map in total darkness before arriving at its Beijing, China destination from Kuala Lampur International Airport in Malaysia/As of March 24 (16 days & counting), multi-national authorities have been unable to pinpoint the plane either intact or by its wreckage/CNN is obsessed with it!

We believe governments have eyes everywhere, & they do to some degree, But even if they do know, nobody is willing to share their information...Political motivation withholds information that could possibly have saved lives.

Our Power Source can be flawed!

The Power Source of the one who trusts in Christ is NEVER flawed!

Paul demonstrated/confirmed the Spirit’s power thru his manner of witness to the church at Corinth.

Christians demonstrate/confirm their power source.

How/When is a Christian’s power source confirmed/demonstrated?

ACCESS RECEPTION(:12)

Explanation:(:12)

:12—“Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.”

Believers—the Church—have all received “the Spirit” who has been sent “from God.” A grand portion of the Spirit’s ministry is that believers would be given absolute insight into that which God has unhesitatingly granted to us thru His great grace.

Having received the Spirit of God, we have thus NOT received “the spirit of the world.”

Since we have received Him, we may “know” what God gives us(:10-11). A ministry of the Holy Spirit is to grant the believer a knowledge of God’s intention for them.

These things which God gives are given freely. God has no hesitation about providing these gifts.

Your ‘heaven’ may be misdirected depending upon the spirit accessed!

“Received”(See :14—decomai)—lambanw—1) To take; 2) To receive (what is given), to gain, get, obtain, to get back. Strong—To take(in very many applications, literally & figuratively [properly objective or active--To get hold of; whereas decomai is rather subjective or passive, to have offered to one; while aireomai is more violent, to seize or remove]).

“World”—kosmov—1) An apt & harmonious arrangement or constitution, order, government; 2) Ornament, decoration, adornment, i.e. the arrangement of the stars, 'the heavenly hosts', as the ornament of the heavens. 1Pet. 3:3; 3) The world, the universe; 4) The circle of the earth, the earth; 5) The inhabitants of the earth, men, the human family; 6) The ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, & therefore hostile to the cause of Christ; 7) World affairs, the aggregate of things earthly—7a) The whole circle of earthly goods, endowments riches, advantages, pleasures, etc, which although hollow & frail & fleeting, stir desire, seduce from God & are obstacles to the cause of Christ; 8) Any aggregate or general collection of particulars of any sort. Kosmov has very frequently an unfavorable meaning, denoting the inhabitants of the world, mankind in general, as opposed to God. Strong—Orderly arrangement, i.e. Decoration; by implication--The world (in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively [morally]).

“Know/Understand”—eidw—Perfect Active Subjunctive—

“Freely given”—carizomai—1) To do something pleasant or agreeable (to one), to do a favor to, gratify—1a) To show one's self gracious, kind, benevolent, 1b) To grant forgiveness, to pardon, 1c) To give graciously, give freely, bestow. Strong—To grant as a favor, i.e. Gratuitously, in kindness, pardon or rescue.

From—cariv—Graciousness(as gratifying), of manner or act(abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, & its reflection in the life; including gratitude).

Argumentation:

Jn. 20:19-23—“Then, the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came & stood in the midst, & said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands & His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. So Jesus said to them again, “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, & said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.””

This symbolic act was a promise to the disciples of Jesus’ very power which they would receive at Pentecost. Their individual trust in Jesus would secure the indwelling power of the Spirit of God.

***Gal. 3:1-7—“O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified? This only I want to learn from you: Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh? Have you suffered so many things in vain--if indeed it was in vain? Therefore He who supplies the Spirit to you & works miracles among you, does He do it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?-- just as Abraham “believed God, & it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.”

**1Jn. 4:4-6—“You are of God[implies reception], little children, & have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, & the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth & the spirit of error.”

Jn. 14:16-17—““If you love Me[Jesus], keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, & He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever-- the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you & will be in you. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.”

1Jn. 2:26-28—“These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, & you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, & is true, & is not a lie, & just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him. And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence & not be ashamed before Him at His coming.”

**1Jn. 2:18-20—“Little children, it is the last hour; & as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, & you know all things.”

**Col. 1:9-12—“For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, & to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom & spiritual understanding; that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work & increasing in the knowledge of God; strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience & longsuffering with joy; giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light.”

**Rom. 7:24—8:4—“O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin & death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

***Rom. 8:11-17—“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, & if children, then heirs--heirs of God & joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.”

ACCESS DISCERNMENT(:13-14)

Explanation:(:13-14)

:13—“These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”

The very “things”(:9-12) which God has revealed to the believer via His Spirit(:10, 12), are the very “things” which Paul & other believers share with other believers & the world. These vital spiritual “things” are those which only “the Holy Spirit teaches.” “These things” stand in bold contrast to the mere empty & futile “words” proffered thru unregenerate “man’s wisdom.”

Thereby, the believer—the accepter of God’s “things” thru His “Holy Spirit”—is able to properly appraise “spiritual things.” Thus :14 follows focusing on the natural un-spiritual man.

These things are spoken by God’s called ones.

These things are not formulated & proclaimed thru human wisdom.

They are however “words” formulated & “taught” to us by “the Holy Spirit.”

What Paul speaks/shares/relates combines spiritual with spiritual. Spiritual thoughts combined with spiritual words.

Thru the Spirit’s teaching, we are enabled to compare ‘apples with apples’ & ‘oranges with oranges’ instead of comparing ‘apples with oranges’ & vice versa.

“Words”(See :1, 4, 6)—logov—

“Wisdom”(See :1, 4, 5, 6—Thruout)— sofia—

“Teaches/Taught”2X—didaktov—Adj.—1) That can be taught; 2) Taught, instructed by one; 3) Teachings, precepts. Strong—subjectively--Instructed, or objectively--Communicated by teaching. Used 3X.

“Holy”—agiov—1) Most holy thing, a saint. Agiov has probably as its fundamental meaning separation, i.e., from the world to God's service. If not the original meaning, this at any rate is a meaning early in use. This separation, however, is not chiefly external, it is rather a separation from evil & defilement. The moral signification of the word is therefore the prominent one. This word, rare & of neutral meaning in classical Greek, has been developed in meaning, so that it expresses the full N.T. conception of holiness as no other does. Strong—from agov(an awful thing) [compare agnov[properly, clean, i.e. (figuratively) innocent, modest, perfect], yalpw[probably akin to yallw(to warm); to brood, i.e. (figuratively) to foster]]; Sacred(physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated).

“Comparing/Combining/Expressing”—sugkrinw—1) To joint together fitly, compound, combine; 2) To interpret; 3) To compare. Strong—To judge of one thing in connection with another, i.e. Combine (spiritual ideas with appropriate expressions) or collate(one person with another by way of contrast or resemblance). Used 3X.

“Spiritual”(See :15)—pneumatikov—Adj.—1) Relating to the human spirit, or rational soul, as part of the man which is akin to God & serves as his instrument or organ—1a) That which possesses the nature of the rational soul; 2) Belonging to a spirit, or a being higher than man but inferior to God; 3) Belonging to the Divine Spirit—3a) Of God the Holy Spirit, 3b) One who is filled with & governed by the Spirit of God; 4) Pertaining to the wind or breath; windy, exposed to the wind, blowing. Strong—Non-carnal, i.e. humanly--Ethereal(as opposed to gross), or daemoniacally--A spirit(concretely), or divinely--Supernatural, regenerate, religious.

:14—“But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

The focus of this argument follows from :13’s declaration that only by the Holy Spirit are spiritual truths discerned.

Here, Paul reveals the “natural man’s” utter inability to “discern” spiritual truth. Without the discernment afforded a person by the Holy Spirit, to the unregenerate, the very truth of God remains not only oblivious to him/her but is blatantly “foolishness” to him/her as well. Without God’s spiritual tooling we are not equipped for any kind of realistic appraisal of spiritual reality.

To the natural man everything regarding reality is, not necessarily unspiritual, but is narrowly limited to the guesswork & supposition of the flesh. He/she has “no help to bridge the knowledge gap”(BECNT). Such a narrowed & limited fleshly sieve separates, filters out, & holds back from their grappling, the major categories/nuggets of actual truth in Christ.

In contrast to the saved/spiritual man, a natural/fleshly/unspiritual man will not accept what “the Spirit of God” reveals.

Things of the mind of God are “foolishness” to the “natural man.” It is impossible for a natural man to understand spiritual truth.

Spiritual things must be appraised by & thru a spiritual understanding. This does not mean that no one can come to understand spiritual things, but that one must first accept the Spirit of God in order to link-up with God’s mind.

*Anytime you share Christ with a person who is open to an honest faith debate/defense, you will immediately(thru their brutal honesty) realize he/she consigns “the things of the Spirit of God” to the realm of utter “foolishness.”

“Natural/Without the Spirit/Unbeliever”—qucikov—Adj.—1) Of or belonging to breath. Qucikov has a meaning somewhat similar to sarkikov. Both are used in contrast with pneumatikov. But qucikov has really a distinct meaning, describing the life which is controlled by the quch. It denotes, therefore, that which belongs to the animal life, or that which is controlled simply by the appetites & passions of the sensuous nature. Strong—Sensitive, i.e. Animate(in distinction on the one hand from pneumatikov[non-carnal, i.e. ethereal, or a spirit, or supernatural, regenerate, religious], which is the higher or renovated nature; & on the other from fusikov[physical], which is the lower or bestial nature). Used 6X.

“Receive/Accept/Welcome”(See :12—lambanw)—decomai—1) To take with the hand; 2) To take up, receive; 3) To receive, get—3a) To learn. The words[decomai & lambanw] overlap & distinctions often disappear; yet the suggestion of a welcoming or appropriating reception generally cleaves to decomai. Strong—middle voice of a primary verb; To receive(in various applications, literally or figuratively). Decomai is rather subjective or passive, to have offered to one; while aireomai is more violent, to seize or remove.

“Foolishness”—mwria—1) Foolishness. Strong—Silliness, i.e. Absurdity. Used 5X.

“Know/Understand”(See :2—eidw & 8, 11)—ginwskw—2nd Aorist Active Infinitive—1) To learn to know, come to know, get a knowledge of perceive, feel—1a) To become known; 2) To know, understand, perceive, have knowledge of; 3) Jewish idiom for sexual intercourse between a man & a woman; 4) To become acquainted with, to know. Ginwskw is a knowledge grounded on personal experience. Strong—a prolonged form of a primary verb; To “know”(absolutely) in a great variety of applications & with many implications.

“Spiritually”(See :13, 15)—pneumatikwv—Adverb—1) Spiritually: i.e. By the aid of the Holy Spirit. Strong—Non-physically, i.e. Divinely, figuratively. Used 2X.

From—pneumatikov(See :13).

“Discerned/Appraised/Evaluated”(See :15—“Judges”)—anakrinw—1) Examine or judge—1a) To investigate, examine, enquire into, scrutinize, sift, question—1a1) specifically in a forensic sense of a judge--To hold an investigation, 1a2) To interrogate, examine the accused or witnesses, 1b) To judge of, estimate, determine(the excellence or defects of any person or thing. Strong—properly--To scrutinize, i.e. by implication--Investigate, interrogate, determine.

Argumentation:

**1Kgs. 3:7-9—““Now, O LORD my God, You have made Your servant king instead of my father David, but I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good & evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?””

1Kgs. 4:29—“And God gave Solomon wisdom & exceedingly great understanding, & largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore.”

**Prov. 2:1-9—“My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you, So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding; Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding, If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures; Then you will understand the fear of the LORD, And find the knowledge of God. For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge & understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly; He guards the paths of justice, And preserves the way of His saints. Then you will understand righteousness & justice, Equity & every good path.”

Ezek. 44:23—““And they[priests] shall teach My people the difference between the holy & the unholy, & cause them to discern between the unclean & the clean.”

Mal. 2:7—““For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge, And people should seek the law from his mouth; For he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.”

**2Cor. 8:7-8—“But as you abound in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all diligence, & in your love for us--see that you abound in this grace also. I speak not by commandment, but I am testing the sincerity of your love by the diligence of others.”

What are you teaching others? The results speak of the abounding of God’s grace(or its lack thereof) in me/us.

Mat. 23:15—““Woe to you, scribes & Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land & sea to win one proselyte, & when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.”

**Mal 3:17-18—““They shall be Mine,” says the LORD of hosts, “On the day that I make them My jewels. And I will spare them As a man spares his own son who serves him. Then you shall again discern Between the righteous & the wicked, Between one who serves God And one who does not serve Him.”

**Php. 1:9-11—“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more & more in knowledge & all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere & without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory & praise of God.”

**Heb. 5:11-14—“of whom[Melchizedek] we have much to say, & hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing. For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; & you have come to need milk & not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe. But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good & evil.”

Illustration:

The youth who asked, “Is it wrong to do ‘selfies’”?/A great question & encouraging regarding our ministry to youth/They are not only hearing God’s truth, but are hearing it in a way that brings an awareness of their personal responsibility to God 1st & man 2nd/The teacher intentionally would not answer the question, which is a good thing/ACCESS DISCERNMENT

To answer the question outright would consign ‘selfies’ to the category of cards(poker/gambling) or roosters/dogs(cock or dogfights), or vehicles(robbers) or....in a word—'Tradition,' with no commitment from God Himself! The question is, “How or why do I/you use them?”... “Do I glorify God is what I do?”

Js. 4:17—“Therefore, to him who knows to do good & does not do it, to him it is sin.”

ACCESS EXAMINATION(:15-16)

Explanation:(:15-16)Judgment/Analysis

:15—“But he who is spiritual judges all things, yet he himself is rightly judged by no one.”

“Men will pass judgment on him, but the spiritual man refuses to accept the decision of his ignorant judges.”—RWP

Anyone who is “spiritual” analyses/appraises/assesses/evaluates “all things.” “The spiritual man has a resident Truth Teacher”(MNTC) revealing all he needs to know regarding God. Christians are not narrow-minded but are all-encompassing in their examinations/judgments.

However, at the same time, he himself is not analyzed/appraised by any man(natural/fleshy). With no equipment(Holy Spirit) to properly conduct a thorough analysis, the natural person cannot properly assess another person’s faith.

“Spiritual”(See :13 & 14—pneumatikwv)—pneumatikov—

“Judges & Judged/Appraises & Appraised/Judgments & Judgment/Evaluate & Evaluated”(See :14—“Discerned”)— anakrinei men(‘Truly Judges’)—anakrinw—1) Examine or judge—1a) To investigate, examine, enquire into, scrutinize, sift, question—1a1) specifically in a forensic sense of a judge--To hold an investigation, 1a2) To interrogate, examine the accused or witnesses, 1b) To judge of, estimate, determine(the excellence or defects of any person or thing. Strong—properly--To scrutinize, i.e. (by implication)--Investigate, interrogate, determine.—&—men—Particle—1) Truly, certainly, surely, indeed.

“All”(See :10)—pav—Adj.—1) individually—1a) Each, every, any, all, the whole, everyone, all things, everything; 2) collectively—2a) Some of all types. Strong—apparently a primary word; All, any, every, the whole.

“No one/No man/Anyone”—oudeiv—Pronoun—1) No one, nothing. Strong—Not even one(man, woman or thing), i.e. None, nobody, nothing.

:16—“For “who has known the mind of the LORD that he may instruct Him?” But we have the mind of Christ.”

No one has known the mind of the Lord. Thus, no one can “instruct” the Lord.

Isa. 40:13—“Who has directed the Spirit of the LORD, Or as His counselor has taught Him?”

However, though we do not “instruct” Him, we do “have the mind of Christ.” God thus “instructs” us when we know His mind.

Lk. 24:45, 49—“And He[Jesus] opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.”.....““Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.””

“Known”—ginwskw—

“Mind”2X—nouv—1) The mind, comprising alike the faculties of perceiving & understanding & those of feeling, judging, determining; 2) A particular mode of thinking & judging, i.e Thoughts, feelings, purposes, desires. Nouv is distinctly the reflective consciousness, “the organ of moral thinking & knowing, the intellectual organ of moral sentiment.” Strong—The intellect, i.e. Mind(divine or human; in thought, feeling, or will); by implication--Meaning.

“Instruct”—sumbibazw—1) To cause to coalesce, to join together, put together—1a) To unite or knit together: in affection; 2) To put together in one's mind—2a) To compare, 2b) To gather, conclude, consider; 3) To cause a person to unite with one in a conclusion or come to the same opinion, to prove, demonstrate—3a) To teach, instruct, one. Strong—from sun & bibazw(to force; causative [by reduplication] of the base of basiv); To drive together, i.e. Unite(in association or affection), (mentally)--To infer, show, teach. Used 6X.

Argumentation:

Mat. 7:1-6—““Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; & with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; & look, a plank is in your own eye? “Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, & then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, & turn & tear you in pieces.”

**1Jn. 4:1-6—“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, & every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, & is now already in the world. You are of God, little children, & have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, & the world hears them. We are of God. He who knows God hears us; he who is not of God does not hear us. By this we know the spirit of truth & the spirit of error.”

**1Cor. 4:3-5—“But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by a human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. For I know nothing against myself, yet I am not justified by this; but He who judges me is the Lord. Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness & reveal the counsels of the hearts. Then each one’s praise will come from God.”

**Acts 15:1-2—“And certain men came down from Judea & taught the brethren, “Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.” Therefore, when Paul & Barnabas had no small dissension & dispute with them[Antioch], they determined that Paul & Barnabas & certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles & elders, about this question.”

1Jn.
