I. How We See God is Central

B. As Sinners, How Do We See Him?

C. Jesus Saw Him and Demonstrated Him to Us -- John 1.14

1. Purpose of his mission is to demonstrate God to us:

No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known. John 1.18

14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. John 15.14-15

2. Sharing of Grace and its impact on us -- 2 Corinthians 5.16-21

16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer.17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation;19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

D. An Irony

1. View of God in OT -- Harsh; critical; demanding

2. View of God in NT -- Loving, kind, gracious

3. Yet -- People danced before God; clapped; sang; played instruments to praise; REJOICED in the study of his word in OT; what about us in the New Covenant? Stoic, unemotional?

II. How We See People is Crucial

A. "Love the Sinner and Hate the Sin" -- easier said than done

1. Jeffrey Dahmer

2. Pedophile -- News story in Huntsville, AL -- a man putting hidden cameras in public restrooms so he can lust after children

3. Islam -- Jesus died for Muslim sinners just like all others

4. Homosexuality, etc., etc.

9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."

John Haddington said, "I have been comforted for more than 20 years by the thought that Jesus welcomes, not only sensible sinners, but stupid ones as well."

1. So what?

a. We all need the "friend of sinners" -- nowhere we go eliminates contact with the sinful

b. We all need to lift one another up

1) Most people here care about their relationship to God and want it to be RIGHT

2) Few openly rebellious people here

c. We will all stand in judgment before God to account for our actions -- Revelation 3.4

Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy.

2. God has ALWAYS acted rightly and graciously towards us

Romans 5.8; 2 Peter 3.9; 2 Corinthians 5.16-21 (above) -- we are already righteous because of Jesus -- just keep walking in him

3. How will we respond?

[Special Olympics

John Beck used to be a football star for the University of KY. Later on he became a preacher and was named as Chaplain of the U.S. Olympic Teams. For a number of years he traveled with our Olympic Teams all over the world, leading in their devotions, counseling and praying with many of the athletes.

As he watched these young men and women train for the events in which they competed, he decided that this was a picture of what Christianity really ought to be. Here were people who were sincere and fervent and dedicated to the task before them. They were willing to pay any price, regardless of how much suffering or pain they had to endure. They were willing to pay any price to be #1, to win.

Then one day John Beck was invited to visit the Special Olympics. Special Olympics, as you know, are made up of special athletes. All of them suffer from some kind of mental or physical impairment.

He watched them as 8 runners lined up for the 100-yard dash. They all took off when the starting gun fired, and he was amazed at how good they actually were. But as they reached halfway in the race, one of the boys fell down, skinned his knee on the track, and started to cry.

He said that what happened next was both beautiful and amazing. All 7 of the other runners stopped, and all 7 of them turned around and went to the boy who had fallen. One girl walked over to him and brushed the cinders off his knee, kissed it and said, "There, that will make it feel better."

Then all of them together helped him up to his feet again. And all 8 went across the finish line together. Beck said that he then realized that he had seen the true meaning of Christianity, not in the Olympics, but in the Special Olympics.

SUM: Our highly competitive world seems always to be saying that the only thing that counts is if you are #1, if you can beat everybody else. But I wonder if that is really a picture of what God wants us to be?

It seems to me that the true picture is that when a brother falls, we are all there to help pick him up, and to brush him off, and then to all cross the finish line together. Jesus did it so we could do it.
