G. Key verse: First Messianic Promise,—Genesis 3:15.—Thompson Chain - Bible Book Outlines

Genesis 3:15 (Amplified Bible)

3:15 And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her Offspring; He will bruise and tread your head underfoot, and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Isaac was old and yet called his first-born Esau

"After Isaac had become old and almost blind, he called in his first-born son Esau,"

Esau's name means "handling", "rough", "sensibly felt" because he's a hairy man.

He has the eldest son benefits:

1. first-born are always first even seen in the sitting arrangements during a meal, the genealogy and in receiving a blessing before their father dies.

Genesis 43:33 (Amplified Bible)

43:33 And [Joseph’s brothers] were given seats before him—the eldest according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth; and the men looked at one another amazed [that so much was known about them].

1 Chronicles 5:1 (Amplified Bible)

5:1 NOW [we come to] the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel. For [Reuben] was the eldest, but because he polluted his father’s couch [with Bilhah his father’s concubine] his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph [favorite] son of Israel; so the genealogy is not to be reckoned according to the birthright.

1 Chronicles 5:3 (Amplified Bible)

5:3 The sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel: Hanoch, Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi.

2. Receives double portion of the inheritance.

Deuteronomy 21:17 (Amplified Bible)

21:17 But he shall acknowledge the son of the disliked as the first-born by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he was the first issue of his strength; the right of the first-born is his.

3. It's transferable.

1 Chronicles 5:1-2 (Amplified Bible)

5:1 NOW [we come to] the sons of Reuben the first-born of Israel. For [Reuben] was the eldest, but because he polluted his father’s couch [with Bilhah his father’s concubine] his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph [favorite] son of Israel; so the genealogy is not to be reckoned according to the birthright.

5:2 Judah prevailed above his brethren, and from him came the prince and leader [and eventually the Messiah]; yet the birthright was Joseph’s.

4. dignity and symbol of strength of the father

Genesis 49:3 (Amplified Bible)

49:3 Reuben, you are my first-born, my might, the beginning (the firstfruits) of my manly strength and vigor; [your birthright gave you] the preeminence in dignity and the preeminence in power.

5. Owned by the LORD

Numbers 3:13 (Amplified Bible)

3:13 For all the first-born are Mine. On the day that I slew all the first-born in the land of Egypt, I consecrated for Myself all the first-born in Israel, both man and beast; Mine they shall be. I am the Lord.

Numbers 8:17 (Amplified Bible)

8:17 For all the first-born of the Israelites are Mine, both of man and beast; on the day that I smote every first-born in the land of Egypt [not of Israel], I consecrated them and set them apart for Myself.

6. Brothers next in line can continue his fatherhood

Deuteronomy 25:6 (Amplified Bible)

25:6 And the first-born son shall succeed to the name of the dead brother, that his name may not be blotted out of Israel.

7. Own properties, fields, and wife to marry her and have sons with her

Ruth 4:4-5 (Amplified Bible)

4:4 And I thought to let you hear of it, saying, Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and before the elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeem it; but if you will not redeem it, then say so, that I may know; for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I am [next of kin] after you. And he said, I will redeem it.

4:5 Then Boaz said, The day you buy the field of Naomi, you must buy also Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the dead man, to restore the name of the dead to his inheritance.

Remember that Esau already sold his birthright to Jacob and the birthright is upon Jacob and no longer with Esau. If birthright can be transferable as we have seen, then Esau has all the rights to sell it or not to sell it, he has the power of choice who to award it. The father or the one owning the birthright has to transfer it to anyone they please.

Sequence of events:

1. Esau owned the birthright as first-born

2. Esau sold it to Jacob

3. Esau accused Jacob of stealing it

4. Isaac was never told that first-born right has been sold to Jacob. It's the responsibility of the seller of birthright to gather elders of the town as witnesses. Esau never made this gathering. Worst of all, he never told his father, that Jacob is the new owner of the first-born right.

B. Esau asked "Father, what can I do for you?"

"who asked him, "Father, what can I do for you?"

Now Esau acts as if he still owns the blessing of the first-born, second of his lies regarding his first-born rights, in this part, Esau has now the freedom again to tell his father, the first-born birthright was already sold to Jacob.

Genesis 27:4 (Amplified Bible)

27:4 And prepare me appetizing meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat of it, [preparatory] to giving you my blessing [as my first-born] before I die.

Now he pretends that he can still "steal" the first-born blessing by asking his father Isaac. It's a mark of the "law".

Hebrews 12:16 (Amplified Bible)

12:16 That no one may become guilty of sexual vice, or become a profane (godless and sacrilegious) person as Esau did, who sold his own birthright for a single meal.

Law is based on what man can do for GOD.

Deuteronomy 17:19 (Amplified Bible)

17:19 And he shall keep it with him, and he shall read in it all the days of his life, that he may learn [reverently] to fear the Lord his God, by keeping all the words of this law and these statutes and doing them,

While grace is based on what GOD can do for mankind.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (Amplified Bible)

2:8 For it is by free grace (God’s unmerited favor) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ’s salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God;

2:9 Not because of works [not the fulfillment of the Law’s demands], lest any man should boast. [It is not the result of what anyone can possibly do, so no one can pride himself in it or take glory to himself.]

Galatians 3:10 (Amplified Bible)

3:10 And all who depend on the Law [who are seeking to be justified by obedience to the Law of rituals] are under a curse and doomed to disappointment and destruction, for it is written in the Scriptures, Cursed (accursed, devoted to destruction, doomed to eternal punishment) be everyone who does not continue to abide (live and remain) by all the precepts and commands written in the Book of the Law and to practice them.

Esau was already hated because he was cursed even before he was born. GOD's goodness and mercy for him tolerated all of these so that he can be given a chance, but still his choice is to belittle his birthright as first-born and sell it on the price of a bowl of soup. Remember GOD's mercy to Esau, his father still called him up to tell the truth. Esau was given a chance to hold on to his firstborn birthright no matter what, even if he was hungry.

Romans 8:3 (Amplified Bible)

8:3 For God has done what the Law could not do, [its power] being weakened by the flesh [the entire nature of man without the Holy Spirit]. Sending His own Son in the guise of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, [God] condemned sin in the flesh [subdued, overcame, deprived it of its power over all who accept that sacrifice],

Because no one can satisfy GOD on account of his works and accomplishments but only grace can. Grace filled up what the law can't accomplish. Law was given, while grace and truth came.

John 1:17 (Amplified Bible)

1:17 For while the Law was given through Moses, grace (unearned, undeserved favor and spiritual blessing) and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Galatians 2:21 (Amplified Bible)

2:21 [Therefore, I do not treat God’s gracious gift as something of minor importance and defeat its very purpose]; I do not set aside and invalidate and frustrate and nullify the grace (unmerited favor) of God. For if justification (righteousness, acquittal from guilt) comes through [observing the ritual of] the Law, then Christ (the Messiah) died groundlessly and to no purpose and in vain. [His death was then wholly superfluous.]

Esau asked what can be done, while Jacob goes in right away to take the firstborn blessing because it was his in the first place, he bought it from Esau. Esau expects to get the blessing after his works, while grace already blessed us even before our actions and works.

Romans 5:8 (Amplified Bible)

5:8 But God shows and clearly proves His [own] love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners, Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for us.

Jacob representing grace gets the blessing before doing anything.

2 Corinthians 12:14 (Amplified Bible)

12:14 Now for the third time I am ready to come to [visit] you. And I will not burden you [financially], for it is not your [money] that I want but you; for children are not duty bound to lay up store for their parents, but parents for their children.

Deuteronomy 8:18 (Amplified Bible)

8:18 But you shall [earnestly] remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.

Romans 5:20 (Amplified Bible)

5:20 But then Law came in, [only] to expand and increase the trespass [making it more apparent and exciting opposition]. But where sin increased and abounded, grace (God’s unmerited favor) has surpassed it and increased the more and superabounded,

Grace came first, it was already there, GOD is a GOD of grace and mercy. Law came in late when everything is already worst. If we believe in JESUS, we are already saved. Now we do GOD's work proving that we're already saved.

James 2:17 (Amplified Bible)

2:17 So also faith, if it does not have works (deeds and actions of obedience to back it up), by itself is destitute of power (inoperative, dead).

IX. CONCLUSION:

Galatians 2:16 (Amplified Bible)

2:16 Yet we know that a man is justified or reckoned righteous and in right standing with God not by works of the Law, but [only] through faith and [absolute] reliance on and adherence to and trust in Jesus Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One). [Therefore] even we [ourselves] have believed on Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law [for we cannot be justified by any observance of the ritual of the Law given by Moses], because by keeping legal rituals and by works no human being can ever be justified (declared righteous and put in right standing with God).

Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS, for You have given us grace to save us, it's no longer based on what we can do, but our salvation is based on what You have accomplished, done and finished on the cross.
