Summary: James addresses the power of the tongue. We need to realize the tongue can develop many problems...

THE POWER OF WORDS...

By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr. Kyfingers@aol.com

I. WHAT IS THE MOST POWERFUL FORCE IN THE CHURCH OR THE WORLD?

A. My last year teaching school we were studying about the USSR and all the power that

the USA and the USSR had in their weapon reserves.

Tammy a girl in my 7th grade class ask:

WHAT IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING IN THE WORLD?

B. I thought for a minute. I thought about the knives, guns, atomic bomb, the nuclear bombs,

satellites, lasers, rockets and missiles.

I said: Tammy, let me think about that question and I will get back with an answer.

WHAT IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING IN THE WORLD?

C. I went to bed thinking about: WHAT IS THE MOST DANGEROUS THING IN THE WORLD.

I prayed for a while and I woke up...

I had the answer... I knew for sure what the answer was... THE TONGUE... WORDS...

II. JAMES HAD A BRILLANT LESSONS ABOUT SMALL THINGS...

A. Is it funny today the church wants to talk about REVELATIONS all the time.

When James is one of THE GREATEST BOOKS ON PRACTICAL CHRISTIAN LIVING?

James 3:1 My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater

condemnation.

[2] For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect

man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

[3] Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about

their whole body.

[4] Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds,

yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

[5] Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a

matter a little fire kindleth!

[6] And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that

it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

[7] For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed,

and hath been tamed of mankind:

[8] But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

[9] Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are

made after the similitude of God.

[10] Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things

ought not so to be.

[11] Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?

B. JAMES WAS JESUS' HALF BROTHER... SAME MOM--- MARY,

DIFFERENT DAD'S...

James did not come to accept Jesus as God's son until after the RESURRECTION.

C. JAMES LEARNED AND TAUGHT A POWER LESSON ABOUT LITTLE THINGS...

1. THE MATCH--- can start a big fire...

President John Kennedy had an ETERNAL FLAME lit on his grave.

The first day a little girl SPRINKLED some HOLY WATER over the grave and the ETERNAL

FLAME WENT OUT. A soldier quickly re-ignited the flame.

2. THE BRIDLE --- You can teach and control a horse, a elephant, and a whale...

I was at a circus. The elephant trainer pushed with his bare hand and pushed an eighteen inch

pole in the ground and chained the elephant to the rod.

I said to the trainer: I CAN NOT BELIEVER THAT ROD IN THE MUD CAN HOLD THAT HUGE

ELEPHANT.

The trainer said: IT CAN'T HOLD THE ELEPHANT! He can move any time he wants.

He will pull and feel the resistance and then quit trying... ???

3. THE RUDDER OF A SHIP... The winds can blow the sails, but a good captain

knows the POWER OF THE RUDDER...

D. JAMES' PRACTICAL CHRISTIAN LIVING IS SO DEEP... READ SOME MORE...

TWO EARS... ONE MOUTH...

James 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear,

slow to speak, slow to wrath:

James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his

tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

James 3:10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing.

My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

III. WE SEARCH FOR POWER?

SEEMS WE HAVE A GREAT INTEREST IN MAGIC TODAY?

THERE IS MAGIC IN THE TONGUE --- IT IS FULL OF POWER...

A. Years ago when I was traveling playing music we were in a church.

The Pastor was receiving PRAYER REQUEST...

A man sitting on the first pew stood up and said:

MY BROTHER IS LOST AND GOING TO HELL...

I WANT THE CHURCH TO PRAY FOR HIM TO KNOW JESUS...

I KNOW IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN BUT PLEASE PRAY FOR HIM! WOW!

B. How about the dear saint that testifies: NO ONE HERE KNOWS WHAT I HAVE

BEEN GOING THROUGH. THE DEVIL HAS BEEN RIDING AROUND ON MY BACK

FOR TWO OR THREE WEEKS? WOW!

C. POWER:

The ability to do or act, authorization, energy

Proverbs 13:3 He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide

his lips shall have destruction.

Proverbs 18:20 A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with

the increase of his lips shall he be filled.

[21] Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit

thereof.

D. KEEP YOUR TEMPER --- NO ONE ELSE WANTS IT...

Proverbs 21:23 Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from

troubles.

E. SOFT WORDS ARE MUCH EASIER TO EAT...

Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

IV. YOUR WORDS WILL BE THE LITMUS TEST OF YOUR CHRISTIAN WALK...

A. Many are self-deceived...

James 1:26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue,

but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

[27] Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the

fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

B. YOUR LOVE AND YOUR WORDS WILL BE THE LITMUS TEST OF THE

BEAMMA SEAT OF GOD...

Matthew 12:34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things?

for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

[35] A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things:

and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

[36] But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give

account thereof in the day of judgment.

[37] For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

C. IF YOU DESIRE TO SEE GOOD DAYS... KEEP YOUR TONGUE IN CHECK...

1 Peter 3:10 For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue

from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:

V. THERE WAS A GREAT LITTLE MAN IN THE NEW TESTAMENT... HIS NAME WAS

PHILIP... PHILIP WAS NOT AN APOSTLE ... PHILIP WAS 1 OF 7 HELPERS IN THE

NEW TESTAMENT...

A. PHILIP KNEW HOW TO BE SUBMISSIVE AND TO OBEY.

B. The time was difficult at best...

Acts 8:3 As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and

haling men and women committed them to prison.

Acts 8:5 Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them.

D. PHILIP HAD BEEN IN A GOOD REVIVAL...

Acts 8:15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive

the Holy Ghost:

E. PHILIP KNEW ABOUT DRY TIMES AND HOT DESERT PLACES...

THE ETHIOPIAN WAS IN HIS CHARIOT READING --- ISA. 53:7

Acts 8:26 And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward

the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.

F. THE ETHIOPIAN WAS READING --- ISA. 53:7...

HOW CAN I UNDERSTAND...

Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached

unto him Jesus.

CONCLUSION:

WHAT SEALS YOUR MOODS? SEALS YOUR IDEAS?

Are you looking at REALITY or are you looking BY FAITH?

Out of the abundance of the heart the MOUTH SPEAKS...

IN THE MIDST OF THE STORM PHILIP REFUSED TO ALLOW THE NEGATIVE TO

BIND HIS CONSTRUCTIVE TONGUE POWER...

PHILIP WAS A POSITIVE TALKER...

PHILIP WAS A POSITIVE PRAYER...

PHILIP WAS POSITIVE WITH THE INDIVIDUAL...

PHILIP WAS POSITIVE WITH THE CROWD...

When what you are doing is not working... RETURN TO THE BASICS...

Begin again... TRY AGAIN... INVEST MORE EFFORT AND TIME...

Did you hear about the great artist that made a sculpture of the horse...

It was a master piece, it was like a living horse in stone...

A friend asked: HOW DID YOU DO IT?

The artist said... I TOOK A STONE AND I KNOCKED OFF EVERY THING

THAT DIDN'T LOOK LIKE THE RACE HORSE...

Maybe God is making you a master piece... God build us...
