According to all the works which they have done since I brought them up out of Egypt even to this day, forsaking Me and serving other gods, so they also do to you.

1 Samuel 15:22 (Amplified Bible)

Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Unnecessary distress for men of Israel

"But the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had caused them to take an oath, saying, Cursed be the man who eats any food before evening and until I have taken vengeance on my enemies."

Distressed or "nagas" in Hebrew which means:

1. to drive

2. to tax

3. harass, tyrannize - to exercise arbitrary power; to rule with unjust and oppressive severity; to exercise power over others not permitted by law or required by justice, or with a severity not necessary to the ends of justice and government.

Where does distress comes?

1. When GOD's people look at their ministry leaders as masters and they are the slaves.

Exodus 3:7 (Amplified Bible)

3:7 And the Lord said, I have surely seen the affliction of My people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters and oppressors; for I know their sorrows and sufferings and trials.

2. When you have unpaid debts and unpaid loans

Deuteronomy 15:2-3 (Amplified Bible)

15:2 And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release that which he has lent to his neighbor; he shall not exact it of his neighbor, his brother, for the Lord’s release is proclaimed.

15:3 Of a foreigner you may exact it, but whatever of yours is with your brother [Israelite] your hand shall release.

3. When you're in a middle of war or battle

1 Samuel 13:6 (Amplified Bible)

13:6 When the men of Israel saw that they were in a tight situation—for their troops were hard pressed—they hid in caves, holes, rocks, tombs, and pits or cisterns.

4. When you're in a middle of war, and you're in prayer and fasting

1 Samuel 14:24 (Amplified Bible)

14:24 But the men of Israel were distressed that day, for Saul had caused them to take an oath, saying, Cursed be the man who eats any food before evening and until I have taken vengeance on my enemies. So none of the men tasted any food.

Isaiah 58:3 (Amplified Bible)

58:3 Why have we fasted, they say, and You do not see it? Why have we afflicted ourselves, and You take no knowledge [of it]? Behold [O Israel], on the day of your fast [when you should be grieving for your sins], you find profit in your business, and [instead of stopping all work, as the law implies you and your workmen should do] you extort from your hired servants a full amount of labor.

5. When you are taxed, or monthly bills

2 Kings 23:35 (Amplified Bible)

23:35 Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh, but he taxed the land to give the money as Pharaoh commanded. He exacted the silver and gold of the people of the land, from everyone according to his assessment, to give it to Pharaoh Necho.

6. When you're evil and wicked - when you're an unbeliever

Romans 2:9 (Amplified Bible)

2:9 [And] there will be tribulation and anguish and calamity and constraint for every soul of man who [habitually] does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek (Gentile).

7. From your neighbor

Isaiah 3:5 (Amplified Bible)

3:5 And the people shall be oppressed, each one by another, and each one by his neighbor; the child shall behave himself proudly and with insolence against the old man, and the lowborn against the honorable [person of rank].

8. From your children and wife

Isaiah 3:12 (Amplified Bible)

3:12 As for My people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O My people, your leaders cause you to err, and they confuse (destroy and swallow up) the course of your paths.

9. When you live in a country under a foreign rule

Isaiah 9:4 (Amplified Bible)

9:4 For the yoke of [Israel’s] burden, and the staff or rod for [goading] their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, You have broken as in the day of [Gideon with] Midian.

10. Wicked officials seated in power or government

Daniel 11:20 (Amplified Bible)

11:20 Then shall stand up in his place or office one who shall send an exactor of tribute to pass through the glory of the kingdom, but within a few days he shall be destroyed, [yet] neither in anger nor in battle.

11. Tribulation period causes distress

Luke 21:23 (Amplified Bible)

21:23 Alas for those who are pregnant and for those who have babies which they are nursing in those days! For great misery and anguish and distress shall be upon the land and indignation and punishment and retribution upon this people.

How to avoid distress?

1. Rest in GOD's Presence. - Always pray in tongues. Be a part of major worship services in church. Be ministry-involved.

Job 3:18 (Amplified Bible)

3:18 There the [captive] prisoners rest together; they hear not the taskmaster’s voice.

Isaiah 14:2 (Amplified Bible)

14:2 And the peoples [of Babylonia] shall take them and bring them to their own country [of Judea] and help restore them. And the house of Israel will possess [the foreigners who prefer to stay with] them in the land of the Lord as male and female servants; and they will take captive [not by physical but by moral might] those whose captives they have been, and they will rule over their [former] oppressors.

Zechariah 9:8 (Amplified Bible)

9:8 Then I will encamp about My house as a guard or a garrison so that none shall march back and forth, and no oppressor or demanding collector shall again overrun them, for now My eyes are upon them.

1 Peter 5:7 (Amplified Bible)

5:7 Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.

Our bodies is not designed to carry stress or distress but we cast all our distress upon the LORD.

2. Be encourage by other people's faith

1 Thessalonians 3:7 (Amplified Bible)

3:7 Brethren, for this reason, in [spite of all] our stress and crushing difficulties we have been filled with comfort and cheer about you [because of] your faith (the leaning of your whole personality on God in complete trust and confidence).

3. Focus on love for others

2 Corinthians 2:4 (Amplified Bible)

2:4 For I wrote you out of great sorrow and deep distress [with mental torture and anxiety] of heart, [yes, and] with many tears, not to cause you pain but in order to make you realize the overflowing love that I continue increasingly to have for you.

4. Claim peace and righteousness from JESUS - Prince of Peace and our Righteousness

Isaiah 60:17 (Amplified Bible)

60:17 Instead of bronze I will bring gold, and instead of iron I will bring silver; and instead of wood, bronze, and instead of stones, iron. [Instead of the tyranny of the present] I will appoint peace as your officers and righteousness as your taskmasters.

Our model of distress:

JESUS CHRIST

Isaiah 53:7 (Amplified Bible)

53:7 He was oppressed, [yet when] He was afflicted, He was submissive and opened not His mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so He opened not His mouth.

We are oppressor of the oppressor:

Zechariah 10:4 (Amplified Bible)

10:4 Out of him [Judah] shall come forth the Cornerstone, out of him the tent peg, out of him the battle bow; every ruler shall proceed from him.

Distress is part of human living in this world, as long as we're in this world and in the flesh distress will not disappear but GOD's promise to us, we oppressed the oppressor (distress) and we will distress the distress because we've proceeded from JESUS CHRIST and we will rule over every distress and distressor.

B. Unnecessary sacrifices

"So none of the men tasted any food."

Unnecessary sacrifices are brought about by:

Disobedience

1 Samuel 15:22 (Amplified Bible)

15:22 Samuel said, Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Therefore we obey first and then we sacrifice. We have no choice because we're called living sacrifice before GOD's altar.

Hebrews 13:15 (Amplified Bible)

13:15 Through Him, therefore, let us constantly and at all times offer up to God a sacrifice of praise, which is the fruit of lips that thankfully acknowledge and confess and glorify His name.

Hebrews 12:2 (Amplified Bible)

12:2 Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith [giving the first incentive for our belief] and is also its Finisher [bringing it to maturity and perfection]. He, for the joy [of obtaining the prize] that was set before Him, endured the cross, despising and ignoring the shame, and is now seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

Right now we are in prayer and fasting mode, we know we do spiritual battles with the world but at the same time we are obedience to the church's call to pray, fast and prepare for the whole year.

IX. CONCLUSION:

Our battle is spiritual one, if you consider it as physical then you are distressed.

Zechariah 4:6 (Amplified Bible)

4:6 Then he said to me, This [addition of the bowl to the candlestick, causing it to yield a ceaseless supply of oil from the olive trees] is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit [of Whom the oil is a symbol], says the Lord of hosts.

Ephesians 6:12 (Amplified Bible)

6:12 For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

1 Samuel 17:47 (Amplified Bible)

17:47 And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.

Romans 8:37 (Amplified Bible)

8:37 Yet amid all these things we are more than conquerors and gain a surpassing victory through Him Who loved us.

Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces that's why we rest in our faith knowing that the battle is the LORD's and we are already more than conquerors because of You.
