Anyone, anything or any event you set your heart on is called an idol.
Idolatry as defined by Webster's Dictionary means excessive attachment or veneration for any thing, or that which borders on adoration. For example, when will your work, job or career be an idol to you? Simple. When it distracts you from going to church on Sundays.
Illustration: A husband of one committed lady leader said his husband is very busy taking care of his subordinates even on Sundays, then the career, profession or job of this husband is an idol to the husband.
