Definitely this verse is another S.M. (Secret Message) from the LORD that He tried to hide them in the names of Onan and Er and the Seed is obviously JESUS CHRIST as our Messiah, the Seed of Abraham that is obstructed or hindered to come out in this world from the tribe of Judah.
A. The strong man of this world hinders the Seed
"But Onan knew that the family would not be his, so when he cohabited with his brother’s widow,"
Onan, according to the same Hebrew word meaning: strong.
1 Corinthians 1:23 (Amplified Bible)

Onan is after his personal dignity and not the dignity of the whole nation of Israel, not to mention the dignity of his own tribe, Judah, where the Seed of Abraham will come from - the LORD JESUS CHRIST, so he doesn't care about the seed and wastes it on the ground, that's why he has to die, because he's a direct threat to the coming of the Savior in this world. It's already a custom that GOD uses to bring about the Promised Messiah since the time of Genesis.

If brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, his wife shall not be married outside the family to a stranger [an excluded man]. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her as his wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.

B. The strong man will not raise the Seed in his life

In our times nowadays, if Onan, is alive, he would be someone called a scoffer or mocker, because GOD's law (the WORD OF GOD) has already been given, the issue is not of faith, if he believes or not, but he really believes but he rejects every idea of faith in his life.

People of this world, the unbelievers, the wicked people don't care about the SEED of the WORD - the LORD JESUS CHRIST, they don't care, what they care is to get the wealth, even to the lost of their soul. These unbelievers are the proverbial Onan, the strong but natural man.

There is huge difference in being carnal and spiritual, it's not the level of education but of the love and desire to do spiritual things.

ILLUSTRATION:
A recently born again person cries in happiness and joy because the WORD of GOD, the bible has changed his life from a life of misery and wickedness, yet that same bible has been presented to a lawyer who reads books and books of law, yet that lawyer is not even touched or even blessed and will blatantly say, it's all illogical, i can't understand the bible. What's the difference? the recent born again person, or a baby CHRISTian enjoys the WORD because he's spiritual while the lawyer is natural or carnal man, they have nothing to do with the WORD. This is totally different when that lawyer comes to know the LORD of course.
IX. CONCLUSION:
Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for Your Grace is enough for me, for Your Strength and Power are made perfect and show themselves most effective in my weaknesses.
