JESUS & JOSEPH THE SPECIAL SON Genesis 37:1-11 & Phil. 2:5 -11

I. JOSEPH'S AFFECTION FROM HIS FATHER v.3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age ...

A. Because of his Birth Gen 30 v 22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her womb.23 And she conceived, and bare a son; and said, God hath taken away my reproach: 24 And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.

1. "the son of his old age" - Perhaps Jacob counted Joseph's birth as being one with more special divine help

2. Jesus came into this world super-naturally, through the virgin birth

B.Because of his Behavior - Genesis 37:2 and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report. 1. He was godly at age 17.

2. As an obedient son, he told his father of the evil deeds of his brethren

3. John 8:29 And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

Heb 1 v.9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

C. Because of his Belief v. 5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more. John 10:17 Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.

II. JOSEPH'S ADORNMENT BY HIS FATHER v.3 ... and he made him a coat of many colours. A. Jesus was adorned with Grace in His Ministry John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. Luke 4:22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?

B. Jesus was adorned with Godliness in His Mission 1Tim 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

C. Jesus was adorned with Glory in His Mediation Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

III. JOSEPH'S ANIMOSITY FROM HIS BRETHREN

Genesis 37:4 And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

Mr 10:33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:

A. Because of the Words he Proclaimed 2Tim 3:12 Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

John5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into

Mark 6:3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him.

B. Because of the Wisdom he Possessed John 7:46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.

C. Because of the Works he Performed John 9:30 The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

IV. JOSEPH'S ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE FUTURE 2 DREAMS

Genesis 37:10 And he told it to his father, and to his brethren: and his father rebuked him, and said unto him, What is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

He announced through a dream

A. His Supremacy Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth?

This was fulfilled when he became second in command to Pharaoh

B. His Supply v. 7 For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf. C. His Salvation Philippians 2:9 -11.

9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil. 2:9-11 THE NAME ABOVE EVERY NAME I. IT'S A SPECIAL NAME 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: A. It Is A Name Picked By The Father - It was a name handpicked by God, Matt. 1:21. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. B. It Is A Name That Points To The Father - The name Jesus means, "Jehovah Is Salvation." John 14:9 Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? C. It Is A Name That Preaches Of The Father - 2 Pet. 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. II. IT'S A SUPREME NAME 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; This worship is to involve: A. Humility - every knee should bow 1. In Heaven - In Heaven the name of Jesus is a constant source of praise, Rev. 7:9-11 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. 11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, ; 2. In Earth - John 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.:14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it. 3. In Hell - Rev. 20:10. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. B. Honour - 11 And that every tongue should confess C. Homage - 11 that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. III. IT'S A SAVING NAME A. The Meaning Of The Name - The name means, "Jehovah Is Salvation." Acts 4:12. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. B. The Ministry Of The Name - he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. C. The Majesty Of The Name - v.9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him ie. He Lives Rev. 1:18; I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Isa. 55:6.
