“Applying the Blood”

Text: Exodus 12:7, 23

In Exodus 12, the children of Israel came out of Egypt. God told them, “Place the blood on the doorposts of your home and then stay inside your house. When the destroyer comes over, he will pass over you because of the blood.” So, we know that it was by the blood that they were protected from the destroyer. Not only were they protected, but by the blood, they were also delivered from the bondage of Egypt.

I. BENEFITS OF APPLYING THE BLOOD

Psalm 105:36-45, “He smote also all the firstborn in their land, the chief of all their strength. 37 He brought them forth also with silver and gold: and there was not one feeble person among their tribes. 38 Egypt was glad when they departed: for the fear of them fell upon them. 39 He spread a cloud for a covering; and fire to give light in the night. 40 The people asked, and he brought quails, and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. 41 He opened the rock, and the waters gushed out; they ran in the dry places like a river. 42 For he remembered his holy promise, and Abraham his servant. 43 And he brought forth his people with joy, and his chosen with gladness: 44 And gave them the lands of the heathen: and they inherited the labour of the people; 45 That they might observe his statutes, and keep his laws. Praise ye the LORD.”

All these things that we find in Psalm 105 actually came to be because of the applying of the blood. Sometimes we read these things in a Psalm like this and think, “Yeah, that’s nice. The Lord really watched over them.” But when you put all this into perspective, you begin to realize that the Lord did all these things for them because they were obedient and applied the blood. He didn’t just deliver them from slavery, listen to all the things that He did for them because of the application of the blood:

1. He brought them out of slavery with silver and gold. They were healthy in their bodies and had money in their pockets. Life doesn’t get any better!

2. For over 40 years there was not one feeble amongst them. How many?

a. With men, women and children, close to 3 million people.

b. So, out of approximately 3 million people, there was not one sick among them. No high blood pressure, no cancer, no runny noses, no arthritis, nobody was limping, nobody had bad eyes, and nobody had bad teeth. Everyone of them came out strong and healthy. AWESOME!

3. He gave them a cloud in the daylight to keep them cool.

4. He even gave them fire at night to make sure that they didn’t get cold. Talk about benefits!

5. He satisfied them with bread and donuts from heaven when they got hungry.

6. When it got dry and there was no water around, God would bring water out of the rock and quench all their thirst.

7. He gave them the lands of the heathens.

God has always and always will take care of His people. This applies to us today as we apply the blood. Learning all the things that God did for the people of Egypt just proves to us that God doesn’t want to just bring you out of bondage and sin, but He also wants to take care of every need of your life. He wants to heal your body. He wants to bless your finances. He wants to give you food and drink when your hungry and thirsty. In other words, God wants to play a part in every area of your life.

God brought the children of Israel out in grand style because of the blood. As we begin to understand the benefits of the blood, we will take these Scriptures on the blood and exercise our faith. We cannot receive the total benefit of the blood only through the knowledge of what the blood has done for us. The only way the benefit truly comes is when you apply the blood by releasing your faith and speaking what the Word has to say about the blood.

Speak and sing about the blood. Any time you feel like the devil is tormenting your body, your mind or coming after your family, you need to find every song that you can on the blood of Jesus and sing them all through the house! Find every Scripture you can and speak them over and over again because the blood of Jesus will put the devil on the run every time, guaranteed.

We must apply the blood in order to receive the benefits of the blood.

II. THE BLOOD CLEANSES YOUR CONSCIENCE

The blood has to be applied in two places in order for it to be effective:

Hebrews 9:12, “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

The blood reached all the way into heaven and purchased our eternal redemption.

Ephesians 1:7, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;”

Hebrews 9:14, “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

The blood reached all the way into heaven and purchases our eternal redemption and it also reached all the way into our hearts and purged our conscience. In order for the blood to be effective in our lives, it must purge our conscience. When the blood of Jesus is applied to our conscience, the voices of condemnation, accusation, failure and guilt are silenced!

Andrew Murray says, “The blood that availed so powerfully in heaven and over hell is all-powerful in a sinner’s hearth, too. It is impossible for us to think too highly of, or to expect too much from, the power of the blood of Jesus.”

The blood that reaches both Heaven and your heart cleanses your conscience.

III. HIS BLOOD WAS THE ULTIMATE PAYMENT

On the Day of Atonement, 160,000 lambs were killed. When Solomon’s Temple was dedicated, there were 400,000 lambs that were killed. When the blood flowed down from the temple, it flowed into the brook, which was called Kidron. The brook ran red with blood not just for a few hours, but also for many days. When the people saw this brook running red, it reminded them of the tremendous cost of sin and the price that was paid for them to be made right with God.

What a wonderful picture of the blood! When Jesus shed His blood upon Calvary, the blood flowed down that old cross and washed all our sins away. The blood was the ultimate payment for all the sins of mankind. There is still a fountain that flows with the blood of Jesus. The stains of sin are cleansed beneath the flow of the blood of Jesus. I like the words of this old hymn because they serve as a reminder of the tremendous price that Jesus paid for the cleansing of our sins.

There is a fountain filled with blood, drawn from Emmanuel’s veins.

And sinners plunged beneath that flood; lose all their guilty stains.

Another song says:

Have you been to Jesus for the cleansing power?

Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Are you fully trusting in His grace this hour,

Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Are you washed in the blood, in the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb?

Are your garments spotless, are they white as snow,

Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Hebrews 9:12, “Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

Jesus obtained eternal redemption for us. He paid the price! The word redemption means, “ransom, deliverance, or freedom through the payment of a price.”

Hebrews 9:13-14, “For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh: How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

Jesus purchased our release. We were held hostage by the devil, and the blood of Jesus was the payment or ransom for our release. Jesus purchased our eternal freedom from sin and Satan with His blood. Eternal means forever! Other translations say that Jesus purchased our permanent deliverance!

The Amplified Bible says, “Jesus purchased our complete redemption and everlasting release!”

He did not leave anything out! Everything we need (spirit, soul, body, emotions, finances, and family) He has provided through His blood.

The blood is the ultimate payment, now we need to take that blood and sprinkle it over our lives. That is what Moses did.

Hebrews 9:19-22, “For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people, 20 Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you. 21 Moreover he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry. 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.”

You will notice in this Scripture that Moses applied the blood everywhere. He sprinkled it on the people, sprinkled it on the book, then when he got to the tabernacle, He sprinkled it on the tabernacle, sprinkled it on the vessels of ministry. Moses was throwing blood everywhere.

In the Old Testament, any time someone came to meet with God and worship Him, A LOT of blood was present. In other words, if they wanted to move into the presence of God, blood has to be sprinkled because it was the highest act of worship. The blood enabled the people to go right into His presence. The elements and the power of the blood is still the same today. So, we need to learn to take the blood and apply it in our lives, start sprinkling the blood everywhere we go. How do we do that? Speak the Word of God in faith over your circumstances. The blood of Jesus has provided everything you need. Everything! Now, we just have to apply it.
