Summary: WE ARE PILGRIMS

NOT HOME YET

MAIN TEXT: Hebrew 11:10

For (Abraham) waited for the city which has foundation, whose builder and maker is God”

2 Corinthians 5:1- “For we know that if our earthly house…is destroyed, we have a building from God…not made with hands, eternal in heavens.

Among many Christians, an emphasis on future rewards has gone out of fashion. One pastor once observed “As churches grow wealthier and more successful, they’re less likely to sing “This world is not my Home, I’m just a passing through and more likely to intone “This is my father’s world”. Despite all, we dare not discount the value of hope in our future home.

In his book “The Journey Home” Bright quotes Charles Spurgeon saying , “May we live here like strangers and make the world not a house, but an inn, in which we sup and lodge, expecting to be on our journey tomorrow”. Knowing that heaven is our real home makes it easier to pass through the tough times here on earth. Abraham, the friend of God, illustrated this same other-worldly orientation: “By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as a foreign country…for he waited for the city which has foundation, whose builder and maker is God” (Heb. 11:9-10) His sojourn was that of a traveling foreigner, who by faith sought and eternal city constructed by God.

Over time, I have learned to respect and even long for the future and ever lasting home Jesus has promised in (John 14:2-3) “I go to prepare a place for you…that where I am, there you may be also”. Our home is being prepared by our Lord Jesus Christ. This underscores the fact that we are not home yet.

THERE IS A GATEWAY TO ETERNAL HOME.
