********************************************

Explanation:

:3—“Do not let your adornment be merely outward--arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel--“

“Do not let” is a command to the Christian wife that it is within her power, to either allow flesh to rule, or not to allow flesh to overrule the Spirit of God.

“Do Not Let...Be/Let It Not Be”—estw ouc =‘LET IT NOT BE’——estw—Present -X- Imperative 3rd Sing.—1) third person singular imperative of “to be”. Strong—second person singular present imperative of eimi[I exist/am]; Be thou; also estwsan; third person of the same; Let them be.

Aiwn is usually better expressed by age, it is the world at a given time, a particular period in the world's history. Kosmov has very frequently an unfavorable meaning, denoting the inhabitants of the world, mankind in general, as opposed to God. Strong—Orderly arrangement, i.e. Decoration; by implication--The world(in a wide or narrow sense, including its inhabitants, literally or figuratively [morally]). Imation is used in a general sense to mean clothing, & may thus be applied to any garment when it is not desired to express its exact nature. In a more specific use, however, it denotes the large loose outer garment, a cloak, which ordinarily was worn, but in working was laid aside. Strong—neuter of a presumed derivative of ennumi(to put on); A dress(inner or outer).

:4—“rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle & quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God.”

Godly women always seek spiritual “adornment”, above & to the exclusion of a merely outward “adornment”(spawned of the flesh)(3:3). They seek to please God first!

It is of vastly more importance & is a characteristic of a godly wife, that she adorn herself with “the hidden person(‘man’—anyrwpov) of the heart.” Her chief personal concern is not upon outward appearance but is upon the state of her inward self(“heart”). She is concerned about her inward man. She is well aware that looks can be deceptive.

The “hidden person[man] of the heart” emanates from itself an adornment or beauty which is ultimately “incorruptible.” Such an unalterable beauty arises from a life transformed in Christ. Such a spiritual transformation conveys itself in a tangibly practical expression of the godly wife’s spirit, which is “gentle & quiet.”

A wife who’s spirit is characterized by “gentleness” & “quietness” is “very precious” in God’s eyes. It is God’s design that wives exemplify such “precious” spiritual incorruption.

You may have a penchant for outward adornment—color, shape, uniqueness, expense, quality—these may seem important.

However...When all you think you are, is tied to those outward things—‘to outward appearance’—you have lost the call of Christ! Your inward spirit shines thru to claim your appearance as well!

*1Tim. 2:8-10—“I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath & doubting; in like manner also, that the women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with propriety & moderation, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing, but, which is proper for women professing godliness, with good works.”

*“Gentle/Meek”—prauv—Adj. Genitive Sing. Neuter—1) Mildness of disposition, gentleness of spirit, meekness. Meekness toward God is that disposition of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, & therefore without disputing or resisting. In the OT, the meek are those wholly relying on God rather than their own strength to defend them against injustice. Thus, meekness toward evil people means knowing God is permitting the injuries they inflict, that He is using them to purify His elect, & that He will deliver His elect in His time. Gentleness or meekness is the opposite to self-assertiveness & self-interest. It stems from trust in God's goodness & control over the situation. The gentle person is not occupied with self at all. This is a work of the Holy Spirit, not of the human will. Strong—Apparently a primary word; Mild, i.e. by implication--Humble. Used 3X.

Argumentation:

Rom. 1:16-25—“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first & also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness & unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power & Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, & their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, & changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--& birds & four-footed animals & creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, & worshiped & served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.”

1Cor. 15:39-57—“All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, & another of birds. There are also celestial bodies & terrestrial bodies; but the glory of the celestial is one, & the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, another glory of the moon, & another glory of the stars; for one star differs from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body is sown in corruption, it is raised in incorruption. It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, & there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.” The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, & afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven. As was the man of dust, so also are those who are made of dust; & as is the heavenly Man, so also are those who are heavenly. And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. Now this I say, brethren, that flesh & blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed-- in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, & the dead will be raised incorruptible, & we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, & this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, & this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” The sting of death is sin, & the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Mat. 23:25-26—“Woe to you, scribes & Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup & dish, but inside they are full of extortion & self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup & dish, that the outside of them may be clean also.”

If you let God take care of the inside of you, the outside will be His as well!

Rom. 2:28-29—“For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew[God’s people] who is one inwardly; & circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God.

1Pet 1:22-23—“Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives & abides forever,”

2Cor. 4:13-16—“And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed & therefore I spoke,” we also believe & therefore speak, knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, & will present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.”

Eph. 4:21-24—“if indeed you have heard Him & have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, & be renewed in the spirit of your mind, & that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness & holiness.”

Prov. 31:30-31—“Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, But a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.”

I really like the taste of Mountain Dew(the soft-drink)/The outside has changed thru the years/I can remember the 1960’s labels with the ‘mountaineer’ opening the bottle & the cork making a hole in his tattered hat/The label has changed dramatically but the color is still green & the drink itself is still green/But the drink itself still tastes the same(to my knowledge)—I like it anyway/And that is the draw!/INWARD ADORNMENT

When we were living in Cordele, GA, we occasionally took our kids to the ‘Museum of Aviation’ in Warner Robins, GA/It’s the 2nd largest Aviation museum in the US & it’s bigger & better now than it was then/It was really exciting for young kids, because on the outdoor exhibits, they can crawl inside the cockpits of airplanes & jets & helicopters!(Oh, alright, it was great fun for me too!)/The very SR-71A Blackbird that set the in-flight world speed record is there/The planes all look impressive—their paint is bright, they look as if they could take off at any moment!/BUT there are no ‘guts’ in them—none of the engines work, & none of the instruments work!—Impressive on the outside, nothing on the inside!/No INWARD ADORNMENT

Ladies, American, Canadian, & European women are ‘caught up’ in the belief that you are not beautiful unless you are ‘made up’!—That is a lie from hell itself!/To the eye, a jet may look immaculate & truly be well taken care of, but if it has no engines, it will never get off the ground!/It is only a museum piece with no guts!/INWARD ADORNMENT
