Summary: 3 of ? Judas missed the entirety of that which took place from the time of his leaving the Lord’s supper(13:30) until he arrived in the Garden of Gethsemane, with those who would arrest Jesus(18:3)! Judas Missed...

WHAT JUDAS MISSED-III—John 13:18--17:26(13:31-38)

OR--‘WHILE YOU WERE OUT/AWAY’

Attention:

Lesson Before the Lesson:

A college professor had the mysterious habit of walking into the lecture hall each morning, removing a tennis ball from his jacket pocket.

He would set it on the corner of the podium. After giving the lecture for the day, he would once again pick up the tennis ball, place it into his jacket pocket, & leave the room. No one ever understood why he did this, until one day...when a student fell asleep during the lecture. The professor never missed a word of his lecture while he walked over to the podium, picked up the tennis ball & threw it, hitting the sleeping student squarely on the top of the head.

The next day, the professor walked into the room, reached into his jacket, removed a baseball.

No one ever fell asleep in his class the rest of the semester!

The professor did not want any of the students to miss any vital information.

More importantly, you should never ‘willingly’ miss anything God has in store for you!

The events of our text take place—Shortly after Jesus Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem as Her promised Messianic King(FYI—when the pressure was on, this same crowd & others yelled, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”)...

& during the Passover supper, in which Jesus’ provided an example of Christian humility for His disciples(including Judas Iscariot) by washing their feet as would a servant...

*Judas missed the entirety of Jesus’ revelations & exhortations which took place from the time of Judas’ leaving the Lord’s supper(13:30) until he arrived in the Garden of Gethsemane, with the detachment of soldiers, chief priests & Pharisees to arrest Jesus!(18:3; Mat. 27:27)—[Roman cohort(speira—the tenth part of a legion=600 soldiers)]. That time takes in everything between 13:31--17:26.

Need:

*Every time you are ‘too busy’ to take part in a gathering of the Church of God!

*Every time you think God cannot use you to do what He has plainly shown you

*Every time you ‘avoid’ God’s plain direction

*Every time you discourage another person!

*Every time you do not fulfill an appointment by God...

...Then You are missing out on something vital & life-changing! We have found that Judas Missed many vital life lessons because of his unbelieving attitude AND because of his physical absence...

Judas missed...

13:31 So when he[Judas Iscariot] had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, & God is glorified in Him.

Judas missed...His PERVERSE ROLE In GLORIFYING GOD

From this point(14:31) until the end of chapter 16(:33) is considered by Bible students as Jesus’ ‘Farewell Discourse.’—CTGATJ

‘The High Priestly Prayer’ of chapter 17 is also a continuation of & closure to the ‘Farewell Discourse.’ After the ‘Prayer,’ Jesus & His 11 disciples went out over the Brook Kidron, to the Mount of Olives where they entered the Garden of Gethsemane(18:1).

*Judas missed the entirety of that ‘discourse.’ He missed what took place from the time of his leaving the supper(13:30) until he arrived with the detachment of soldiers, chief priests & Pharisees(18:3)![Roman cohort(speira—the tenth part of a legion=600 soldiers)(18:3; Mat. 27:27)]

Lk. 17:1-2—“Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, & he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.”

Jer. 1:13-16—“And the word of the LORD came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, & it is facing away from the north.” Then the LORD said to me: “Out of the north calamity shall break forth On all the inhabitants of the land. For behold, I am calling All the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says the LORD; “They shall come & each one set his throne At the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, Against all its walls all around, And against all the cities of Judah. I will utter My judgments Against them concerning all their wickedness, Because they have forsaken Me, Burned incense to other gods, And worshiped the works of their own hands.”

Jer. 25:8-14—“Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Because you have not heard My words, ‘behold, I will send & take all the families of the north,’ says the LORD, ‘& Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, & will bring them against this land, against its inhabitants, & against these nations all around, & will utterly destroy them, & make them an astonishment, a hissing, & perpetual desolations. ‘Moreover I will take from them the voice of mirth & the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom & the voice of the bride, the sound of the millstones & the light of the lamp. ‘And this whole land shall be a desolation & an astonishment, & these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years. ‘Then it will come to pass, when seventy years are completed, that I will punish the king of Babylon & that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity,’ says the LORD; ‘& I will make it a perpetual desolation. ‘So I will bring on that land all My words which I have pronounced against it, all that is written in this book, which Jeremiah has prophesied concerning all the nations. ‘(For many nations & great kings shall be served by them also; & I will repay them according to their deeds & according to the works of their own hands.)’”

Interestingly, this week’s FBCC sign ministry declares: ‘God may be doing His greatest work when evil seems to triumph.’

Likewise, Jesus’ work involving the Cross—His glorification—began to unfold with Judas Iscariot’s betrayal. L

13:31 So when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now the Son of Man is glorified, & God is glorified in Him.

32 If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, & glorify Him immediately.

13:31-32

Judas missed...The FACT That GOD’s GLORY IS IN JESUS & VICE-VERSA.

“The” Son of Man” is pointed to by God as doing His will. Likewise, God is ‘pointed to’ thru the only-begotten Son of God.

The two[Father & Son] work together in perfect Trinitarian harmony, to promote God’s overall plan.

Jn. 14:7-11—“If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; & from now on you know Him & have seen Him.” Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, & it is sufficient for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, & yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, & the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. Believe Me that I am in the Father & the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.”

1Jn. 2:23—“Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.”

2Jn. 1:9—“Whoever transgresses & does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father & the Son.”

Application:

?What have you Missed thru your personal Inattention to the things of God?

?Are all the above, things that you have missed as did Judas Iscariot?
