Series: Playing A New Game [#1]
A MOTHER’S TOUCH
John 19:25-27
Introduction:
On this Mother’s Day, I want to begin a new series. When I think about all that happens in people’s lives, I think about a board game I used to play called “Life”. In this game, the goal is to make it through the entire game board with the most money. Along the way, you may choose to go to college, get married, have children, etc… As you go through the game, you may experience difficult situations that cost you money and time.
I think that many people go through their life, just as a person goes through the game- You just take life as it comes. Maybe, you need to play a different game- A game in which you can win for sure. We are going to look at the 1st thing that is needed for success in this new game- A Mother’s touch.
John 19:25-27 (NIV)
“Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Dear woman, here is your son," and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.”
A mother’s touch is…
1. Present.
On Jesus’ worst day on Earth, His mother was present. She was near the cross of her Son. While most of Jesus’ followers had ran and hid; His mother was there. A mother is there for her children, no matter the situation.
Bel Aire, if we are going to play a new game; we must be present for people. No matter the situation, we are to be there for them. People need Christians who will just be there for them.
A mother’s touch is…
2. Selfless.
Mary had put herself in a very dangerous situation. They were killing Jesus and would have had no problem killing all of His followers, including His family members. She didn’t care. She didn’t care what being there for her Son cost her. Jesus knew this and He asked John to take care of His mother. She wasn’t thinking about her care, only about her Son Jesus.
Bel Aire, if we are going to play a new game; we must put other’s needs before our own. We should be focused on the souls of everyone around us. Without Jesus, they have no hope. What are we willing to give up in order to lift Jesus up to all people?
A mother’s touch is…
3. Loving.
No matter what a mother’s child has done, she still loves him. Now we know that Jesus had not done anything to deserve this; but as far as most people were concerned, He wasn’t any better than the criminals on either side of Him. Mary loved Jesus with all of her being; and I cannot think of anything much worse to go through than what she did at Jesus’ cross.
Bel Aire, if we are going to play a new game; we must love people like God loves them- Unconditionally. We need to hate the sin; but love the sinner.
1 Corinthians 13:4-8a, 13 (NIV)
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”
Conclusion:
Sometimes, we need to have a mother’s touch. Playing this new game is about winning through Jesus Christ. If you want to win, that win comes through God.
