Summary: Part 2 of a 4 part sermon dealing with the importance of managing temptation effectively so that it will not become sin, thus freeing God to work in our lives.

Temptation Management 101-II—Luke 4:1-13

We must learn to control/manage life’s temptations.

Control our falling into the temptations—Sexual/Drug/Alcohol/Food/ Social-Relationships/ Financial, etc....— so they do not become sin, hindering God’s work in us.

Jesus was able manage temptation so that it never hindered His ministry by becoming sin.

God’s people must know how to manage temptation...

...because the way we handle temptation is crucial to the effectiveness of our witness.

How are we to manage temptation effectively? or How can we be better at temptation management?

But First,

Why should we be concerned about temptation management in the first place?...2 verses:

1Cor. 10:13—“No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; & God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it.”

Jas. 1:12-15—“Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, & He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away & enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; & when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”

KEEP ENEMIES(:2)Recognize/Label

Explanation:(:2) Aware/Identity/Company/Villains/Sources/

“And Jesus... was led about by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil.”

1Pet. 5:8—“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

2Cor. 11:14—“And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.”

Argumentation:

1Pet. 4:7—“The end of all things is at hand; therefore, be of sound judgment & sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.”

Eph. 4:27—“...& do not give the devil an opportunity.”

1Jn. 3:8-10—“the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, that He might destroy the works of the devil. No one who is born of God practices sin, because His seed abides in him; & he cannot sin, because he is born of God. By this the children of God & the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.”

1Cor. 15:33—“Do not be deceived: “Bad company corrupts good morals.””

Rom. 11:28-29—“From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts & the calling of God are irrevocable.”

1Jn. 4:1-3—“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; & every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; & this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, & now it is already in the world.”

Fasting is always combined with Prayer.

2Chr. 20:1-3—“Now it came about after this that the sons of Moab & the sons of Ammon, together with some of the Meunites, came to make war against Jehoshaphat. Then some came & reported to Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, out of Aram & behold, they are in Hazazon-tamar (that is Engedi).” And Jehoshaphat was afraid & turned his attention to seek the LORD; & proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.”

Argumentation:

1Pet. 5:5-6—“...& all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,”

2Chr. 7:14—“if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, & pray & seek My face, & turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, & will forgive their sin & heal their land.”

Mk. 8:34—“And He summoned the multitude with His disciples, & said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, let him deny himself, & take up his cross, & follow Me.”

Ps. 119:21—“Thou dost rebuke the arrogant, the cursed, Who wander from Thy commandments.”
