Summary: "Little children, keep yourselves from Idols"

A NATION IN NEED

(Exodus 32:1-8) And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me. And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD. And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. (KJV)

I. THEY NEEDED TO REMEMBER THEIR PAST.

(Exodus 32:1) And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him. (KJV)

A. THE DISTANCE THEY HAD CAME

“Up out of the land of Egypt”

B. THE DIFFICULTIES THEY WERE NOW FACING.

“This Moses, we wot not what is become of him”

1. Note how slightly they speak of him…This Moses

2. Note how suspiciously they speak of his delay.

“We wot not what is become of him”

a. He may have deserted us.

b. He may be dead.

C. THE DEMAND THEY MADE.

“Make us gods, which shall go before us.”

II. THEY NEEDED TO REMEMBER GOD’S PROVISION.

(Exodus 32:3-4) And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. (KJV)

A. CONSIDER THE SOURCE OF THEIR PROSPERITY.

(Exodus 3:21-22) And I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians: and it shall come to pass, that, when ye go, ye shall not go empty: But every woman shall borrow of her neighbour, and of her that sojourneth in her house, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: and ye shall put them upon your sons, and upon your daughters; and ye shall spoil the Egyptians. (KJV)

B. CONSIDER HOW WILLING THEY WERE TO

SACRIFICE THEIR POSSESSIONS.

1. God had a purpose for these possessions.

(Exodus 35:20-22) And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses. And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD’S offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments. And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the LORD. (KJV)

2. These people misused their possessions.

III. THEY NEEDED TO REMEMBER GOD’S PURPOSE.

(Exodus 32:7-8) And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. (KJV)

A. THEY HAD REJECTED GOD’S WORD.

(Exodus 20:1-5) And God spake all these words, saying, I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; (KJV)

B. THEY REFUSED TO DO GOD’S WILL.

1. They corrupted themselves.

2. God is unwilling to claim them.
