The Man Who Had It All - Mark 10:17-22
Introduction:
A family attended church one Sunday for the first time in years. When they got home they began to discuss the service around the table. The father said, "Well I thought the preacher preached too long and too loud." The mother said, "Well I thought the choir sang out of tune." The daughter said, "Well I thought the sound quality was terrible in the sanctuary." Just then the son spoke up and said, "Yeah, but it sure was a good show for only a nickel!" It is amazing how so many people allow money to control their life. In this sermon I want you to see a man that had everything money could buy but lacked the most important thing in life which is a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Notice two important factors concerning this rich young ruler. Notice first of all:
I. The Rich Young Ruler’s Possessions (v. 17-20)
A. He Had The Riches (17a)
"Rich" reveals this man had a lot of money.
B. He Had The Respect (17b)
"Ruler" reveals a lot of people respected him.
C. He Had The Requests (17c)
"Ran" reveals he had questions to be asked.
D. He Had The Recognition (17d)
"Knelt" reveals he recognized His authority.
E. He Had The Right Words (17e-18)
"Good Teacher" reveals he knew how to flatter.
F. He Had The Remembrance (19)
"You know" reveals he could quote the Bible.
G. He Had The Religion (20)
"Have kept" reveals he lived by the Bible some.
II. The Rich Young Ruler’s Poverty (v. 21-22)
A. He Lacked The Reasoning (21a)
"Go and sell" reveals his lack of obedience.
B. He Lacked The Relationship (21b)
"Follow me" reveals he wasnt following Christ.
C. He Lacked The Repentance (22)
"Went away" reveals he didnt turn his life over.
Invitation:
In closing I want to challenge each one of you to not allow the things of the world to keep you out of heaven. The Bible says, "The love of money is the root of all sorts of evil." We see that to be true in the life of the rich young ruler for money kept this man out of heaven. The good news is that maybe later in life he did get saved because the Bible said he walked away grieved which means he walked away pondering about what he had heard.
