Summary: You can be a wise person in Jesus Christ

Matthew 7:24-27

Topic: How to become a wise person

When we think of someone being wise, we usually think of a person who has been to college and has earned many educational degrees. When we think of someone being wise, we usually think of someone who has a whole lot of knowledge in their head. Now it must be understood that going to school and college is a good thing. In matter of fact, one should learn all they can while going to school and college. But going to school or college, and earning many educational degrees doesn’t necessarily make you a wise person because you can earn all the educational degrees that colleges and universities has to offer, but yet still not be wise. Having a whole lot of knowledge in your head does not make you wise person either. For example, there is a group in our society that calls themselves Evolutionists. A person who is an evolutionist is considered a smart and knowledgeable person because an evolutionist is one who has been to school and earned many educational degrees. But the problem with the evolutionist is that he/she believes that we were all evolved from monkeys. But the bible says that we were all created in the image and the likeness of God. And because the evolutionist has denied that God is our creator, God has called the evolutionist a fool because the bible says in Psalms 14:1 that , “The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”

So the question is asked, “How does a person become wise person?”

Proverbs 4:5-7 says to “Get wisdom, get understanding; forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Forget her not, and she shall preserve thee; love her, and she shall keep thee. Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting, get understanding.

To become wise, you must receive wisdom. And to receive wisdom, you must go to God who is the giver of wisdom

Proverbs 2:6 says, “For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.

Ephesians 1:17 says “That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him.”

James 1: 5-8 says, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given unto him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing from the Lord. A double man is unstable in all his ways.

To receive wisdom, we must look to God, who is the giver of wisdom . We must pray and ask God for wisdom, and God will help us to become a wise person. And to receive wisdom from God you must go through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is the wisdom of God.

I Corinthians 1:23-24 says, “But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both the Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.”

To receive wisdom, we must believe and receive Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior because Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God.

Not only are we to look to God and believe and receive Jesus Christ to become wise, but we must read and study the Holy Bible, the Word of God, so we can learn how to live wisely.

2nd Timothy 3:15- “And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

To become a wise person, you must read, study, and learn the Word of God. 2nd Timothy 2:15 says, Study to show yourself approved unto God. A workman needeth not to be ashamed dividing the word of truth.

Now the reason why you need to study the Word of God to become a wise person is because God doesn’t want you to be unwise in your daily living. God wants you to be wise in everything that you do or say. That is, God wants you to be wise in making good decisions. God wants you to be wise in handling your personal finances. God wants you to be wise in your relationship with your wife, husband, children, relatives, neighbors, friends, co-workers, enemies, boss, strangers, or with people in general. God wants you to be wise in choosing a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, or wife. God wants you to wise in following the laws of the land. God wants you to be wise in taking good care of your bodies and your health. God wants you to be wise in what you eat. God wants us to be wise in planning your daily affairs. God wants us to wise in handling our problems that we face in life. God wants you to be wise in handling your business with Him and with other people. God wants you to be wise in handling your emotions. God wants you to be wise in your thoughts and in your prayers. You see, God doesn’t just want you to be wise on Sunday, but God want you to be wise on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. God doesn’t just want you to be wise when you are at church, but God wants you to be wise when you are at home, at work, at school in your neighborhood, in the supermarket, while driving your car, while you are on vacation, or wherever you may be. God wants you to be wise in everything you do, or say.

Ephesians 5:17 says, “Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.”

Now to know what the will of the Lord is for our lives, we must read, study, and learn the Word of God; for the Word of God teaches us what the will of God is for our lives. For example in 1st Thessalonians 4:3-4 says, “For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication; That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel(body) in sanctification and honor. Now the only way we could learn that it is the will of God that we should abstain from fornication, which is pre-marital sex, we would have had to read it in the Word of God because the word of God tells us to abstain from fornication. Also, if you would look in 1st Thessalonians 5:18 says, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.” Now, for us to know that it is the will of God for us to give thanks to God for everything, we would have to have read that in the Word of God because the Word of God tells us that we should thank God for everything he does for us.

But to understand the will of God for our lives, not only are we to read, study, and learn the Word of God, but before we attempt to read and study the Word of God, we must ask God to give us the understanding of His Word so we may be able to understand what is the will of God for our lives.

Psalm 119:27 says, “Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.”

Psalm 119:34 says, “Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.”

Psalm 119:73 says, “Thy hands have made me and fashioned me: give me understanding, that I may learn your commandments.”

Psalm 119:125 says, “I am thy servant; give me understanding, that I may know thy testimonies.”

Psalm 119:144 says, “The righteousness of thy testimonies is everlasting; give me understanding, and I shall live.”

Psalm 119:169 says, “Let my cry come near before thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to thy word.”

Yes, to become a wise person, we must look to God

Yes, to become a wise person, we must receive and believe in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is the wisdom of God.

Yes, to become a wise person, you must read, study and learn the Word of God and ask God for understanding of His Word.

But most importantly of all, to become a wise person, we must obey God’s word.

That is, we must do what God has commanded for us to do in His Word. This is what wisdom is all about. Wisdom is knowing and doing the right thing according to the Word of God. To know the right thing to do, we must seek God and His Word. But wisdom comes when we make a decision to do what God has commanded for us to do in his Word.

Matthew 7:24-27 says, “Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock; And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the wind blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not; for it was built upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand; And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.”

To be wise, you must not only trust in the Lord Jesus Christ, not only do you need to know the Word of God, but you must do and obey the Word of God. Now notice that Jesus says that if a man hears my words and do them is like a wise man who builds his house upon a rock. Now, the house in Matthew 7:24 is representative of a person life, home, marriage, and the rock in Matthew 7:24 is representative of Jesus Christ, who is our Rock of salvation.

You are a wise person when you build your life, your home, or your marriage upon the solid rock of Jesus Christ by trusting in him and being obedient to his Word.

But notice something here. Notice in Matthew 7:25 that it says, “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and it beat upon the house; and it fell not : for it was founded upon a rock.” Now, that scripture let us know that just because you are saved, that does not exempt you from having problems in your life. In this life, you will experience difficulties, pain, problems, heartaches, disappointments, discouragements, rejections, setbacks, trials and tribulations, sorrows, confusion, etc. But if your life is built upon the solid rock of Jesus Christ by you trusting in him, and obeying his word, no matter what storm may come into you life, you will be able to stand and have victory over the storm. That is why it is so important that you become wise by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ and obeying His Word because in this life, you will experience some storms in your life. But you don’t have to let the storms in this life take you over. You can stand against the storms in this life by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ and obeying His Word.

Throughout the Bible we read about wise men who were faced with storms in their lives, but yet God was able to see the through it.

For example, Joseph, a wise man, was rejected by his brothers, sold into slavery, lied upon and was put in jail, but in due time Joseph went from the prison house to the Pharoah palace because while Joseph was going through the storms of this life, God was able to help him to go through it.

Another example is Job. Job was a wise and wealthy man, but one day Job lost everything that he had including his ten children by death. His health went bad, and his wife deserted. But in due time, Job was blessed with a new wife, new children, and was blessed with more stuff than he had before because while Job was going through the storms in this life, God was able to help him to go through it.

Another example is Daniel and the three Hebrew boys. Daniel was thrown into the lion den, but God saved Daniel from getting eating up by the lion. The Hebrew boys were thrown into the furnace of fire, but God was with them in the furnace of fire and kept them from burning up.

Another example is Apostle Paul. Apostle Paul, a wise man, was put in prison and beaten with rods for preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ, bitten by a snake, shipwrecked, but God kept Paul through the storms of in this life until his dying day.

Last but not least, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ, the Son of God was a wise man. But yet he was rejected by his own people. He committed no crime, but yet he was arrested and was sentence to die by cruxifxion. Jesus Christ died upon the cross, but in three days Jesus Christ rose from the dead with all power in his hands. And because Jesus Christ is alive today, it is a wise thing to trust in Him for our salvation. It is a wise thing to trust in Jesus Christ for our healing. It is a wise thing to trust in Jesus Christ for our deliverance. It is a wise thing to trust in Jesus Christ for our hope and strength. Psalm 30:5 says that “weeping may endureth for the night, but joy comes in the morning.” No matter what storm you may face, if you do the wise thing by trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ and obey his word in the midst of the storm, your joy will come in the morning because Jesus Christ is alive , and He is Lord.
