Our text verses today are as follow’s.

Galatians 3:13; "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:"

1 Peter 1:18-19; "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:"

Revelation 5:9-10; "And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth."

Prayer

Heavenly Father; Meet us here today. Speak to each heart, beginning with my own. Draw the lost to Christ for salvation, restore the fallen child. Bless this word to Thy glory. In Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen!

Redeemed how I love to proclaim it.

Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb.

Redeemed by His infinite mercy,

His child and forever I am.

Redeemed, redeemed, redeemed,

by the blood of the Lamb,

Redeemed, redeemed,

His child and forever I am.

These words were written by Fanny Cosby, a blind saint of God, who wrote over 20,000 hymns and poems.

The word "Redeemed" is used some 62 times in the Bible. Most of which are found in the Old Testament. Fifty-five times to be exact. Only seven times in the New Testament the word "Redeemed" is used. Three of which we read in our text verses.

There are eight definitions of the word from the Hebrew language, and four from the Greek

In all eight definitions from the Old Testament Hebrew, the word is almost identical with the exception of one usage. The same is true of the New Testament word "Redeemed" as all four definitions say practically the same thing. Both the Old Testament word and the New Testament word means; "to release, to deliver, to rescue, to recover, buy back, to ransom."

It’s First Use

The first use of the word Redeemed is found in Genesis 48:16, "The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth."

Jacob’s name had now become Israel, a change that was made by God. Israel was giving his parting blessing to the two sons of Joseph; Ephraim and Manasseth. The statement that Israel (Jacob) made was to the LORD. A prayer by Israel to God for his grandsons.

The angel that Israel spoke of here was none other than the preincarnate Christ. The angel that wrestled with Jacob at the ford Jabbok, by a brook. This is where Jacob’s name was forever changed. The angel redeemed Jacob (Israel) then from all evil. This redemption was the forgiveness of his past sins. Redemption does just that, it means that we have been bought back. As we were once only a sinful creature, we now have been redeemed by the blood of Christ.

Exodus 21:8, "If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her."

In this passage redemption speaks of a daughter being sold to be a maidservant, and if her master is not pleased with her; "then shall he let her be redeemed."

Leviticus 25:30, "And if it be not redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be established for ever to him that bought it throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubile."

This use of redemption tells us of a dwelling house in a walled city being redeemed within a full year of it’s selling.

Leviticus 27:28, "Notwithstanding no devoted thing, that a man shall devote unto the LORD of all that he hath, both of man and beast, and of the field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed: every devoted thing is most holy unto the LORD." Redemption here tells of the devoted thing to the LORD is not to be sold or redeemed.

Numbers 18:16, "And those that are to be redeemed from a month old shalt thou redeem, according to thine estimation, for the money of five shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs." Here we see the Bible speaking of the redeeming of the firstling of all flesh being redeemed from a month old.

Deuteronomy 7:8, "But because the LORD loved you, and because he would keep the oath which he had sworn unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondmen, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt." This passage tells us of how God brought Israel out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and redeemed them from bondage.

2 Samuel 4:9, " And David answered Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, and said unto them, As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity." David answers Rechab and Baanah his brother, the sons of Rimmon and tells them; "As the LORD liveth, who hath redeemed my soul out of all adversity."

1 Kings 1:29, "And the king sware, and said, As the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,"

David again tells of being redeemed from all his distresses to Bathsheba.

Nehemiah 1:10, "Now these are thy servants and thy people, whom thou hast redeemed by thy great power, and by thy strong hand." Here redemption speaks of the people that God had redeemed by His great power, and strong arm.

Psalms 31:5, "Into thine hand I commit my spirit: thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of truth." David’s Psalm includes redemption as he states from the verse "thou hast redeemed me, O LORD God of host."

Psalms 106:10, "And he saved them from the hand of him that hated them, and redeemed them from the hand of the enemy." This Psalm tells of redemption from the hand of him that hates, and redeemed from the hand of the enemy.

Isaiah 1:27, " Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness." Isaiah tells of Zion being redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.

Isaiah 51:11, "Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away." Here we are told that the redeemed of the LORd shall return, and come with singing unto Zion.

Isaiah 52:3, "For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye shall be redeemed without money." Isaiah speaks here of those who have sold themselves for nothing, and ye shall be redeemed without money.

Isaiah 63:4, "For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come." This tells of the day of vengeance, "and the year of my redeemed is come."

Lamentations 3:58, "O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul; thou hast redeemed my life." God does redeem one’s life.

Luke 1:68, "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people," Here we see the coming Christ into the world to provide forgiveness from sin to all who will believe.

Revelation 14:3, "And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth." The Bible speaks here of the 144,000 which were redeemed from the earth.

We Are Redeemed

The redeemed are those who have been bought out of the bondage of the sin nature which all of mankind possess. We had no choice in this matter at all. It is passed down to us from our parents. It is an inherent nature, one that is against the Lord God. The redemption Christ offers will take you from the punishment of your sins and set your feet upon the solid rock. That rock is Jesus Christ. 1Corinthians 10:4 "And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ."

Redeemed means that I am no longer under the penalty of my sins. Jesus Christ paid my ransom in full on the cross of Calvary. He shed His life blood to cleanse me from sin. Peter tells of of this in, 1Pe 1:18-19 "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:"

People Who Have Been Redeemed

I want to give you some of the people who have been redeemed now. These are people we find in the Bible.

First the cripple who carried his bed on the Sabbath day was redeemed. John 5:1-16, "After this there was a feast of the Jews; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of

whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the

Sabbath. The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the Sabbath day: it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had made him whole. And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the Sabbath day."

The leper in Matthew 8:1-4 was redeemed and made clean. Matthew 8:1-4, "When he was come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed him. And, behold, there came a leper and worshipped him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed. And Jesus saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them."

The woman at the well in John 4 was redeemed. John 4:4-20, " And he must needs go through Samaria. Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour. There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children,

and his cattle? Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband: For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly. The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship."

Zaceheeus was in a tree when he was redeemed in Luke 19:1-6, "And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.

And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully."

Others Who I Have Known Were Redeemed

I have had an unusual opportunity to reach quite a number of lost souls at home meetings. I like to call these cottage prayer meetings, and revivals. Often we have counted more souls saved in these meetings that at actual Church revivals. One such conversion was a Barry Alford. After winning his Mother one afternoon, she invited me and a co-labor to her home to speak with her family. When we arrived at her home that evening she had some 60 people present. Adults, teenagers, children. Every room was filled with her family, to hear the message that had brought her redemption. On the first of five nights at her home, Barry, her oldest son was saved. Later he was called into the ministry, and is now Pastoring a Church in Chicago. God can reach into one’s home with redemption. By the way there were over 100 saved in those five nights at this dear lady’s house.

Another illustration of God redeeming a soul is Ann Lewis. At my first Pastorate, I was privileged to meet this teenager. She came out of curiosity to see who had opened the old Church building. The Church had closed it’s doors for many months before the Lord led us to re-open them and start worship services. It was about three weeks into the services when a beautiful fourteen year old girl attended our Sunday morning services. She too was redeemed after coming to the Lord Jesus for salvation.

Another young man with whom I worked was redeemed. Kerry White Jr. After giving him the simple plan of salvation, Kerry cried out to the Lord on his way home from work, and God reached down in redemption and saved this young man. He has since been called to the ministry, and is attending Bible college in Tennessee. God can and will redeem one who comes to Him through His Son Jesus Christ.

Wouldn’t you like to be redeemed too! God will redeem you if you will but come His way. You can not come your own way, God will not accept that. But if you come the Bible way, God is willing and ready to redeem you. Here’s How to come to Him today/

First, you must confess that you are a sinner. Romans 3:10, 3:23

Second, you must know there is a penalty for your sin. Romans 6:23

Third, you must confess Christ with your mouth. Romans 10:9

Fourth, You must believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead. Romans 10:9

It is that simple. So why not come to Christ now? Pray; God be merciful to me a sinner. I repent of my sin, and receive the Lord Jesus as my Saviour. I believe that Jesus died for me, and rose from the dead to save me from my sins. The best I know how I receive eternal life from you. In Jesus Christ I ask it. Amen!
