Calling Jesus Lord
Text: "I tell you that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, ’Jesus be cursed,’ and no one can say, ’Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit"
(1 Cor. 12:3 NIV).

Introduction:
The most profound thought that crosses a human mind is the love of God as it is revealed in Jesus Christ. It is beyond our understanding that Jesus would come to earth and live and die for humankind’s sin, providing salvation for those who have faith in him. How that faith comes about is the theme of this message. The basic work of the Holy Spirit is to lead those who are lost to an intelligent and yet simple confession of Jesus as Lord. No one can make this confession apart from the gift of the Holy Spirit.
I. First, consider some general comments about this confession.
A. There are two observations regarding the true test of the inspiration of the Spirit of God. First, its nature is always intelligible. Second, the Holy Spirit always focuses attention on Jesus Christ.
B. The Holy Spirit’s main goal is to glorify Christ and to secure Christ’s lordship in people’s lives. In other words, the ministry of the Holy Spirit is Christ-centered. The true test of any work of the Spirit is the place it gives to Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit directs all his powers toward Jesus’ glorification.
C. The confession of Jesus as Lord distinguishes believers from unbelievers. This confession becomes the basis of all the other gifts that will be considered in later messages. Unless a person has accepted Jesus as Savior and made him Lord, there is no way the Spirit can give additional gifts.
II. Second, consider how the Holy Spirit enables people to acknowledge Jesus as Lord.
A. He reveals the sinfulness of sin (John 16:8). Conviction of sin is a prerequisite to repentance and receiving the divine nature. The sin referred to in John 16:8 is failure to believe in Jesus as Savior. Reprove is a legal term implying the presentation of evidence or proof. It brings to light true character.
B. He reveals the certainty of truth about righteousness (John 15:26). In revealing the truth, the Word takes prominence. The Word is both incarnate (John l:14),Jesus Christ, and written, the Bible.
C He reveals Christ’s sufficiency (John 16:14-15). In order for people to be saved from their sinful nature, they must realize that they are sinners.
The Holy Spirit makes them aware of this fact. After they come to realize their sinful condition, they must see Jesus as sufficient to save from any sin. This is also the Holy Spirit’s work.
Conclusion:
At this time, it is fitting to do some soul-searching. Is Jesus your Savior? Are you aware of your sinful condition, and do you now see Jesus as Lord? The Holy Spirit is at work. He wants you to be saved. Listen to him speaking to your heart and accept Jesus as your Savior.
