The Promises of Christmas

Matthew 1:18-25

Intro.

Joseph was concerned about his betrothed wife, now with child.

In a dream an angel brought to him the promises of Christmas.

1. There would be a sign. Matt. 1:20c

-“for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy

Ghost.”

-The virgin birth of Christ was a sign given to the

prophet Isaiah.

-Isaiah 7:14

-These same words are repeated to Joseph.

-The virgin birth would be miracle that could not be

explained away.

-This sign would give assurance that this was the

Promised Messiah.

-It was unmistakable.

2. There would be a son. Vs.21

-Before the days of ultrasound, Joseph knew he would

have a son.

-The fulfillment of Isaiah 9:6

-Sent by the Father.

-1 John 4:14 And we have seen and do testify that the

Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world.

-Galatians 4:4 But when the fulness of the time was

come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made

under the law,

-He would be the Son of God.

-Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said unto her,

The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of

the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called

the Son of God.

3. There would be a Savior. Matt. 1:21c

-He would come to save His people from their sin.

-The sin of Adam (Romans 5:12)

-The penalty of sin (Rom. 6:23)

-Jesus would be that Savior.

-1 John 1:11-12
