Title: “A Few Words That Say A Lot”
Text: Nahum 1:7 “The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.”
Introduction: As I thought on the text before us I had a difficult time trying to outline it. I kept on trying to concentrate on nothing but the Lord being our stronghold, and trying to extract truths regarding nothing but that subject. After much head scratching and praying the Holy Ghost spoke to my heart and enlightened me as to why I was having such difficulty with my study. This verse does not speak primarily of God being a stronghold. Rather, this verse speaks about several things concerning God without one of them being the single emphasis of the text. It would seem that in our text, God is giving us a few words that say a lot about Him personally, and that is how we would like to approach this verse tonight. By God’s marvelous help lets consider what these few words say to us about God:
I. In our text we see God Personally.
“The Lord is good…”
~ Psalm 119:68 “Thou art good, and doest good; teach me thy statutes.”
A. The Lord is Essentially good.
~ Psalm 106:1 “Praise ye the Lord. O give thanks unto the Lord; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
B. The Lord is Eternally good.
~ Malachi 3:6 “For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.”
C. The Lord is Expressively good.
~ Psalm 107:8 “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!
II. In our text we see God Powerfully.
“…a stronghold in the day of trouble…”
~ Psalm 62:11 “God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.”
A. Consider His power to Deliver.
B. Consider His power to Destroy.
~ Nahum Ch.1
~ Matthew 10:28 “ And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
~ II Peter 2:8 “The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:”
III. In our text we see God Perceptively.
“…He knoweth them that trust in Him.”
~ Psalm 147:5 “Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite.”
A. His knowledge is Indellible.
B. His knowledge is Intimate.
~ Psalm 139:1-12
