Summary: A great hymn with a great message of worship

HYMNS THAT DEMAND WORSHIP!

Sermon #1

By Ivan G. Casteel

ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS NAME!

Acts 4:12.

Ac 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. (KJV)

Php 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (KJV)

INTRODUCTION: Hymns are written to magnify – to praise and to worship the Lord. Some are written to give the message of salvation or Christian living. This particular hymn renders forth praise and worship to the Lord God Almighty.

All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name!

Let angels prostrate fall,

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all,

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all!

Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget

The wormwood and the gall,

Go spread your trophies at His feet,

And crown Him Lord of all.

Go spread your trophies at His feet,

And crown Him Lord of all.

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,

Ye ransomed from the fall,

Hail Him who saves you by His grace,

And crown Him Lord of all,

Hail Him who saves you by His grace,

And crown Him Lord of all!

Let ev-‘ry kindred, ev-‘ry tribe

On this terrestrial ball,

To Him all majesty ascribe,

And crown Him Lord of all,

To Him all majesty ascribe,

And crown Him Lord of all!

O that with yonder sacred throng

We at His feet may fall!

We’ll join the everlasting song,

And crown Him Lord of all,

We’ll join the everlasting song,

And crown Him Lord of all!

This hymn was originally written with eight stanzas. Most recent hymn books only have four stanza, some have six. Hardly any have the full eight stanzas.

Edward Perronet, who wrote the marvelous praise hymn, was not one to put up with certain church issues. He was a minister in the Anglican church for some time, but, after becoming fed up with what he felt was the church’s “nonsense”, he became a Methodist, joining up with the Wesleys. As a Methodist he now faced persecution and, as John Wesley recorded, “Edward Perronet was thrown down and rolled in mud and mire.

The eight verses which Perronet wrote have been called "The Coronation Hymn", the clear purpose being to affirm the kingship of Christ. Much of the imagery is drawn from the Book of Revelation (the morning stars and martyrs calling from the altar), and from the Lamentations of Jeremiah (the wormwood and the gall). John Rippon (1751-1836), a Baptist minister from London, in his A Selection of Hymns from the Best Authors (1787) deleted verse two, changed the wording of the eighth, and added a new final verse.

I. STANZA ONE

All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name!

Let angels prostrate fall,

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all,

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all!

This seems to be an announcement coming from the universe alerting every living creature that Jesus Christ is passing by or entering our presence.

When the President of the USA enters the Chambers of Congress to deliver the State of the Union Address – The Sergeant of Arms announces “Ladies and Gentlemen – the President of the United States of America, President George Bush.”

ALL HAIL – this has to do with getting the attention from some who is quite a distance away. It was a way of alerting someone for a specific purpose. It is calling out to someone to give them information.

It is also a means of – Saluting.

The announcer is making the announcement to all the universe. “All Hail” or everyone pay attention – Then comes the announcement: “The power of Jesus Name”. The name “Jesus” carries “all power”. Mt 28:18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (KJV)

Think of all the power that could be mustered up here on earth. If we took all of the Jet airplanes in the world and could capture all the power from all those jet engines:

Then all of the hydroelectric motors that are used to generate all of the electricity in the world. I saw a motor once that the drive shaft coming out of it was at least 12 inches in diameter. The sprocket on it was approximately 8 feet high.

All of the power generated from the falling water in the Niagara Falls harnessed and put to work.

All of the freight trains in the world. All of the wind velocity that blows – all of the 18 wheeler trucks in the world – if we took all of the power used in all of these things and captured it into one source of power it would not equal the power that has been given to Jesus Christ.

All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name!

Let angels prostrate fall,

LET ANGELS PROSTRATE FALL – That is speaking of worshipping the king of heaven. The Mighty Powerful One. The angels fall in worship as His name is mentioned. The angels know their assignment – they are to worship Him. That tells us of the position of worship in heaven.

DIADEM - In modern usage, the mark or badge of royalty, worn on the head; a crown; and figuratively, empire; supreme power.

A distinguished or principal ornament.

A diadem of beauty. Isaiah 28:5.

“BRING FORTH THE ROYAL DIADEM” – this would suggest that it is to be brought by another and not the one whom was intended to wear it. It doesn’t say who brings it – only that it is to be brought to the person of Jesus Christ of Heaven. For the believer the diadem would be our surrendered life and will that is to be brought to Him and placed under His control and mastership. When we come and fall prostrate at His feet we are yielding ourselves to Him in complete surrender. We are saying to Him, “I am your servant – I am at your command.”

Scripture will tell us that not only the “royal diadem” but everything is to be presented to the Lord Jesus Christ. Ro 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. (KJV)

Ro 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

7 For he that is dead is freed from sin.

8 Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:

9 Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. (KJV)

This would be the bringing forth the royal diadem to do what these scriptures have just said.

CROWN HIM LORD OF ALL.

Once this presentation is made to the Lord Jesus Christ it is not ours to take up again. It belongs to Him and He is to keep it for His benefit. That means that we crown Him Lord of our life in every form and fashion. Col 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. (KJV)

LORD OF ALL. Have you done that? Have you given Him lordship of all you are and all you have? Is He preeminent in everything? He is to be preeminent in every matter in this church – had He been given that position? Can we say that in all matters of church function Jesus Christ is preeminent?

The church music? Is He preeminent?

The church program? Is He preeminent?

The church preaching? Is He preeminent?

The church people? Is He preeminent?

II. STANZA TWO

Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget

The wormwood and the gall,

Go spread your trophies at His feet,

And crown Him Lord of all.

Go spread your trophies at His feet,

And crown Him Lord of all.

This Stanza has great significance for every Christian.

SINNERS, WHOSE LOVE CAN NE’ER FORGET This references the fact that all redeemed souls can never forget what the Lord has done for us. How could anyone ever forget the blessed redemption that was granted each one that believed. I’ll never forget that night that Jesus Christ came into my heart and cleansed me from my sin, and wrote my name in heaven. What a night that was! It was a Friday Night April 12, 1952. I knelt before the cross of Christ and asked Him to forgive me my sin and make me one of His very own, and just as real as I am standing here today, He said, “Yes, my son”, and the great transaction was complete. I became His child, and will forever more be His child. I could never forget that experience.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL I CAN’T FORGET - THE WORMWOOD AND THE GALL,

This speaks of the condition and result of my sin. My sin had made me bitter, unloving, uncaring, and unconcerned about anything but myself. I had that taste of wormwood and the bitterness of gall in my life, and I was lost and undone. I realized I was lost and I also realized that the wages of sin was death. I was on my way to hell as a racecar speed, but that night Jesus Christ changed my life, and now I am His, and He is mine. I am His child, and He is my Father.

That wormwood and gall was turned into blessings, and heavenly benefits that can come only from knowing Him personally.

By realizing what He has done for me makes it easy to do what that next line says.

Go spread your trophies at His feet,

And crown Him Lord of all.

One day we will lay our crowns and rewards at the feet of The Lord Jesus Christ as a token of our love for Him. That’s why it is important to serve Him today not because of duty but because of love.

It’s not so hard to praise Him when you think of all He has done.

III. STANZA THREE

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race,

Ye ransomed from the fall,

Hail Him who saves you by His grace,

And crown Him Lord of all,

Hail Him who saves you by His grace,

And crown Him Lord of all!

Our first thought of this would be that this is talking about the Jewish people only, but the Gospel is to be taken to all people in every nation, which will include any and all people of the earth.

The second line would better identify who is the recipient of the statement.

Ye ransomed from the fall,

Who is that talking about? All of humanity. Every person’s ransom has been paid. Everyone may not benefit from the paid ransom, because they do not believe the Gospel, but the ransom has been paid nevertheless. May we each understand that our ransom has been paid and we have been set free through the payment He made.

Jesus, all our ransom paid,

All Thy Father’s will obeyed,

By Thy sufferings perfect made:

At Calvary our sins were laid.

Jesus paid it all

All to Him I owe

Sin had left a crimson stain

He washed it white as snow.

HAIL HIM WHO SAVES YOU BY HIS GRACE!

Salute Him who has saved you. Give honor to Him. You honor Him by not praising Him, and by thanking Him often and publicly for saving you. You honor Him by not shaming Him in public. By not using bad language to express yourself. By not making Him ashamed of you. You honor Him by telling others how much He means to you.

IV. STANZA FOUR

Let ev-‘ry kindred, ev-‘ry tribe

On this terrestrial ball,

To Him all majesty ascribe,

And crown Him Lord of all,

To Him all majesty ascribe,

And crown Him Lord of all!

EVERY KINDRED – EVERY TRIBE refers to all of earth’s people.

The accomplishment of this would solve every political, moral, domestic problem on the earth today. The terrestrial ball is talking about the ball of earth. The globe. The planet Earth.

Every person on Earth is to give glory to God – Jehovah God not Allah. The Lord God of Heaven. The God who created the universe.

MAJESTY IS DEFINED - Greatness of appearance; dignity; grandeur; dignity of aspect or manner; the quality or state of a person or thing which inspires awe or reverence in the beholder; applied with peculiar propriety to God and his works. We always think of a king or royalty when applying majesty.

Jehovah reigneth; he is clothed with majesty. Ps. 93:1.

The voice of Jehovah is full of majesty. Ps. 29:1.

It is applied to the dignity, pomp and splendor of earthly princes.

To Him all majesty ascribe,

Ascribe means to give to God the majestic honor, praise, and authority He rightly deserves. This can only be done through grace and love. Observing the law will not render the “majestic ascription” that is demanded. That is why those who live their lives by the law don’t do much worship. It takes the knowledge of grace to really know when and how to worship. The Pharisees never worshiped God, they worshiped the law. Many saved folks do the same today – their satisfaction comes from the keeping of the law rather than because of grace. I couldn’t keep the law well enough to satisfy God. Therefore, Christ came and through His death offered me grace. Grace saves completely and totally. Yet we have those today who are saved by grace who live their life by the law rather than because of gratefulness to the Lord.

When we really understand grace then it is easy to worship Him, with all of His majestic belongings.

V. STANZA FIVE

This is my favorite stanza:

O that with yonder sacred throng

We at His feet may fall!

We’ll join the everlasting song,

And crown Him Lord of all,

We’ll join the everlasting song,

And crown Him Lord of all!

O THAT WITH YONDER SACRED THRONG

All of heaven’s population is not there yet. Those of us who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them and then we will forever and forever praise and sing the everlasting song of praise and glory given to His holy name. Every person that has died in Christ is in heaven waiting for us to get there. Then we can join in with that “Sacred Throng” singing praises and worship to His holy Name. All of the saints of past generations are in Heaven this very moment singing praises to Him.

WE AT HIS FEET MAY FALL!

Think about that day when you, a ransomed child of God, can fall prostrate before Him and join in that everlasting song of praise.

WE’LL JOIN THE EVERLASTING SONG

There are those who don’t seem to like singing praises. You are going to have a hard time in heaven. There will be a lot of singing and praising. There will be a lot of falling down at the feet of the Redeemer and crowning Him Lord of all.

There will be songs like “Hallelujah To The Lamb”.

“The Hallelujah Chorus”.

“Glory To His Name”.

AND CROWN HIM LORD OF ALL!

When it is all over here on earth and the saints are gathered in heaven – a voice will say, “All Hail”! There may be a pause – and then the voice continues on and says, “The Lord Jesus Christ – The Savior Of The World.”

There won’t be any applause – All conversation will cease. Then Phil 2:9-11 will take place.

Php 2:9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name:

10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;

11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (KJV)

All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name!

Let angels prostrate fall,

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all,

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all!

Then we the redeemed will take our rightful place around the throne of God and will forever and forever and forever sing of His greatness and glory. I don’t know who will be Heaven’s choir leader, but it will be the greatest choir ever assembled, singing the greatest songs of praise ever sung.
