TRUE WISDOM

Proverbs 2:1-15

(Devotional Series 6)

It is difficult to find a precise definition for the word "wisdom" which appears so often in this book. Sometimes it is almost personnified, and some have equated it with the Holy Spirit. It is probably more exact to say that it is meant to represent the knowledge of God (5) and his will.

In these verses we learn three things about it.

I. IT HAS TO BE SOUGHT BY MAN (1-5)

If you were told that your garden contained "hidden treasures" (4), wouldn’t you dig up every inch of it? The knowledge of God is the greatest treasure anyone can find because it brings with eternal life (John 17:3). How important that we should search for it with all our heart!

II. IT HAS TO BE GIVEN BY GOD (6-9)

We can only "discover" God as he reveals to us. He has done this in nature, in the Bible, and supremely, of course, in the Lord Jesus Christ.

(See 2 Corinthians 4:4)

III. IT HAS TO BE APPLIED TO LIFE (10-15)

To say that we know God, and to continue "to walk in the ways of darkness" (13) is, of course, a complete contradiction. Knowing Him should keep us from sin in every shape and form.

Look at 8:13 where we read, "The fear of the Lord" (and that is the beginning of wisdom) "is hatred of evil."

According to Dr. Joel B. Santos, no person can avail the "true wisdom" if he is not connected to God. Personal attachment to the Lord Jesus Christ will surely put him BESIDE the source of wisdom."

Prayer: Lord, may the knowledge and love of you keep me from evil way. Help me to know you personally in my life.
