Summary: To show the importance of maintaining the presence of God in our homes.

GO GET GOD!!!

Mark 5:22; 35-43

Mr 5:22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,

Mr 5:35 While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?

36 As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

37 And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.

38 And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

39 And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth.

40 And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.

41 And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.

42 And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.

43 And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat. (KJV)

INTRODUCTION: We have the record of a father and a daughter. The daughter was sick unto her death. The father came home one evening to find his precious daughter very ill. Perhaps the mother was holding her and rocking her to help comfort the little girl. Maybe there was a cold, damp wash cloth on her forehead to help lower the fever. The sickness was untreatable by any home remedy and apparently, the concept of the story would bear this out, there was nothing that could be done by the local medical association. These possibilities had all been exhausted. Nothing more could be done. The father leans over the daughter, and says, “Honey, there is a man in town whose name is Jesus (I’m glad he didn’t say Oral Roberts, or Bennie Hinn); they say He is God. I am going to go and get Him!

This Biblical event recorded here in Mark and also in Matthew and Luke has the answer for a sin sick home, a sin sick church, and a sin sick nation.

There are some other places in the N.T. where we see that Jesus was beckoned to go to a certain home and perform a miracle:

The Centurion’s home.

The home of Mary and Martha. Lazarus had died.

Peter’s mother-in-law died at home. Jesus raised her from the dead.

Let me give you this story and make a few applications to this present day problems.

I. THE RULER OF THE SYNAGOGUE Vs. 22

Mr 5:22 And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, (KJV)

A. He Knew Where To Find Help.

There are three things that would have happened:

1. He had heard of Jesus, perhaps from people on the street.

2. He had heard of Jesus’ healing power. Perhaps he had observed Jesus performing one of the miracles.

3. He had faith that Jesus was the answer. (Not that He had the answer, but that He was the answer.)

B. He Knew Where The Trouble Was. (This is very important in the solution to anything).

1. In his house. The problem wasn’t with the neighbors. It wasn’t with the youth program at church. It wasn’t that the S/S teacher didn’t show any interest in teaching his daughter. He said, “The problem is at my house.”

Too many parents are too eager to blame everyone but the real source. Some forget that their children are sinners like everyone else.

The problem is not that the police have it in for your teenager. I have heard people say every time the police see my son/daughter they get a ticket. That cop has it in for my child. The problem is not with the police, but in our houses.

We have let a wicked and evil society dictate to us how to think, how to teach our children, and how to operate our houses. The problem is not in the neighborhood but in our houses. If every house was operated correctly there wouldn’t be any “bad” neighborhoods.

If we could have every home in our church come before God, and say, “The problem is at my house. Our house is the one in need of a visit from God. Our house needs God.” If that would happen, we could have a real revival. Every household in our church needs God, or needs a more dedication to God. There are no perfect homes in BHBC.

2. His family. You will never get help from God until you acknowledge the fact that your family needs help that only He can provide.

I think of the homes where dad may not be what he should be. He is worldly minded in that he always takes his family away for the weekend and causes them to skip church.

They go to the boat shows, or the home and garden shows at the fairgrounds.

They go to the Antique Car Shows at the fairgrounds on Sunday.

They go here, they go there, always on the go.

Buy this, buy that.

So busy that there is no time for God.

It’s no wonder that our homes have crumbled to pieces. We have intentionally kept God out of our homes. The destruction of the home is what happens when God is removed.

Go get God and bring Him home with you!

If only we could get every dad to be a leader in his home. If he would go and get God and bring Him into the home, what a difference that would make.

If every dad in our church would dedicate himself to being a godly father and husband, what a difference that would make.

If every home would make Christ pre-eminent in their family, what a difference it would make.

Our homes have so much competition from the world. Don’t raise your hands, but how many of you have an evening meal at the table with the family, at least three times a week, no TV, everyone at the table, no B/B practice, no cheerleading practice, no PTA, no union meetings to interfere? How many? The few in number would surprise all of us.

If we would bring God into our homes, things would change:

We would talk different.

We would dress different.

We would turn off the TV. You couldn’t watch the current trend of TV with God sitting there watching with you.

We would talk different to the children.

We would display a different atmosphere than usual.

We would put away the magazines that we usually read.

We would find the Bible and wipe the dust off of it, and put it in place of the TV Guide.

There was a song several years back, “If Jesus Came To Your House Today, I Wonder What You Would Do?”

What we need is God in our homes.

We need to give our kids an oversize dose of God and His ways in our homes.

We must teach our kids that the things of this present world are wrong.

Homosexuality. The Bible hasn’t changed on the sin of homosexuality. I can’t imagine Christians having friends who are homosexuals.

Pre-marital sex. God still condemns it.

Kissing on dates. It leads to pre-marital sex.

I’m even against holding hands until married. You say, “You are kidding? “No, No, No”. The Bible says that it is good for a man NOT to touch a woman. We have thrown that out the window.

If you never hold hand on dates, then there would never be any pre-marital pregnancies. You say, “Bro. Ivan, you really are dumb. Holding hands doesn’t cause pregnancy”. I know, but it can lead to it. God expects purity in the lives of all His children.

You say, “That’s too old fashioned for me.” When God comes home with you, everything changes that was patterned after the world. God’s ways haven’t changed. He is still the same as he was when your grandparents were young.

I have a picture of my dad in a swim suit when he was about 20 years old. That would have been the late 1920’s or early 1930’s. How many of you have seen some of the swim suits from that era? It was a full body garment. It covered the shoulders and about half of the thigh. It would look like the present shortie long handle underwear.

Someone needs to go get God and bring Him home. Our homes need God. Our homes are sick, and if God doesn’t come into them soon it will be too late.

If God would become the prominent figure in every home what a change it would make in the reporting of the evening news. Have you ever stopped to think what news would be reported if there were no:

Murders.

No government corruption.

No child abuse.

No bank robbers.

No adultery.

No Hollywood.

About 90% of the news is caused by sin.

All there would be to talk about would be the weather. Or they could give the church activity schedule for the week.

There wouldn’t be anything to report. They would have to go back to church news, articles on the values of the family. We would see them choosing the “Dad Of The Year”. “The Mother Of The Year”. Why! they might even pick “The Pastor Of The Year”. The front page news would be that a certain church had a record breaking attendance with 100 souls saved and 75 baptized. It used to be like that.

Now we have kicked God out of the house.

II. THE REQUEST OF JAIRUS Vs. 23

Mr 5:23 And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of death: I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. (KJV)

A. My Little Girl Is Dying. When things get bad enough then you will go and look for God.

With most church people things haven’t gotten bad enough yet. We can still find a little bit of comfort by talking to our best friend on the telephone.

The Doctor says, “Try this for a week or two and if it doesn’t work I’ll try something else.”

Somewhere, sometime, someone had better go and get God and bring Him home with them.

B. “Come And Lay Thy Hands On Her, That She May Be Healed; And She Shall Live.”

1. A desperate dad. May God help us to realize that we must go and get God into our lives very soon, else we all die.

2. Marriages are shaky everywhere.

3. Some of you have financial difficulty.

4. For some, it is a job problem.

The answer is not a social issue. The answer is that you need to go and get God and bring Him home with you.

Have you noticed that when people drop out of church the troubles seem to increase.

C. Meanwhile Back At The Home, That Mommy Leans Over The Little Girl And Says, “Hang On Honey, Daddy’s Gone To Get God.”

Could it be that someone here will die if we don’t get God into the picture?

Could it be that some homes will split if we don’t get God involved with all our heart?

Could it be that this church will stagnate if we don’t get God in all of our activities?

III. THE RESISTANCE THAT WAS PRESENT Vs. 35

(Mark 5:35) “While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further?”

Why is it that there is always someone who steps out in the path of activity, and says, “It ain’t gonna work”!

We try to reach some kids and keep them out of the fire of hell, and someone says, “It won’t work! It won’t work for you”. Or maybe, “That’s not the way to do it.”

Someone told D. L. Moody, “We don’t like the way you are doing that.”

He replied, “How do you do it?”

Their reply was, “We don’t do it?”

Moody said, “I like my way better than yours.”

Look at the words of Jesus in Vs. 36, “(Mark 5:36) “As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the synagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.”

I wonder how many pastor’s across this country have experienced resistance from a church that had no mind or thoughts for God, and Jesus put His arm around him, and said, “Be not afraid, only believe.”

I was talking to a preacher just Friday and he told me that things weren’t very stable in his church right now. What he was saying was, that things weren’t going good at all. There was trouble somewhere.

I wonder how many mothers have rocked their sick child in the wee hours of the morning with a death fever and God reached down and put His arm around that mother and said, “Be not afraid, only believe”.

How many parents have had wayward children and have prayed for them and their safety for years, and after much prayer, the Lord put His arm around them and said, “Be not afraid, only believe.”

How many missionaries have been called to a foreign field and didn’t know how they would get there, and God put His arm around them and said, “Be not afraid, only believe.”

Perhaps I am talking to someone right now who is seeking a decision from God. His answer is, “Be not afraid, only believe.”

IV. THE RESULTS OF GOD COMING TO THE HOME Vs. 41. “...Damsel, I say unto thee, arise.”

(Mark 5:42) “And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment.”

There was a happy home there that day.

There was a happy dad that day.

There was a happy mother.

There was a grateful daughter there that day.

There were some happy on lookers there.

When we see the results of God coming into a home it brings happiness to all.

What this world needs more than global trade;

What this world needs more than new oil exploration rights;

What this world needs more than global agreement in politics;

What this world needs more than a functioning Social Security program;

What we need more than a conservative legislature is homes that have seen and experienced the results of having God come into their home.

Oh! what a difference it would make.

The resurrection power of Jesus Christ changed the home in our text.

That same resurrection power is what your home needs.

That same resurrection power is what you need in your life.

That same resurrection power will transform you into a child of God.

I’m talking to some here right now who must have this resurrection power in your home.

There are some right now who are listening to me that are not saved. You are lost without Christ. If you don’t get born again you will bust hell wide open. Why would anyone tarry on this matter of getting saved, when they know they are lost.

Lost without Christ. Lost in sin. Lost forever. Oh! come to Jesus today.

This same Jesus that we see in this passage will some day come again. With Him He will bring life, hope, and happiness for all who believe.

For those who have rejected Him, he brings doom and death for all eternity.

If your marriage is having trouble, why don’t you come and get God and take Him home with you today?

If things in life are going sour, why don’t you come and get Jesus and take Him home with you today?

I have a message of hope for you today. Don’t reject it.

Listen, Dad, do you need Jesus?

Mom, do you need Jesus?

Teenager, do you need Jesus?

Boy or girl, do you need Jesus?

If you are not saved, you need Jesus today. You do not have the assurance of having another opportunity.

Why don’t you come?

Come to Jesus. Come and be saved. Come and take Jesus home with you today.
