THREE CROSSES

TEXT: MATTHEW 27:26-31; LUKE 27:32-46

INTRODUCTION: I would like us to look at the three crosses mentioned in our text this morning/evening. Each one has a significant meaning for us today. It is important that we understand what each one represents, because your eternal destination may depend on it.

I. THE CROSS OF REDEMPTION

Redemption means to buy back, to ransom, to rescue from loss.

Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:

Christ bought us back.

1 Cor 6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

A. A Cross Of Suffering

Crucifixion was the cruelest form of punishment devised by man. Explain it. Scourged, crown of thorns, and what happened on the cross.

Mat 26:67 Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others smote him with the palms of their hands,

Isa 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

Isa 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

But the worst suffering came when Christ was on the cross. God the Father turned His back on His Son and the Trinity was for the first and only time broken.

Mat 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

Mat 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

B. A Cross Of Substitution

2 Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Propitiation: A suitable sacrifice, turning away anger.

The greatest tragedy is that Jesus died for all, past present and future, but all will not receive the sacrifice.

Only Jesus can be our substitution, I could never die to forgive sin.

C. A Cross Of Salvation

1 Cor 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

But He didn’t stay on the cross.

1 Cor 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

1 Cor 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

1 Cor 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

1 Cor 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

I. THE CROSS OF REDEMPTION

II. THE CROSS OF REJECTION

Verse 39; Luke 23:39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

A. A Cross Of Misconception

If Thou be. The thief had a misconception of who Jesus was and the way to get to heaven. Just like many people have today.

They think that;

1. Baptism

Acts 8:35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

Acts 8:36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

Acts 8:37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Acts 8:38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

Jesus was baptized.

Luke 3:21 Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened,

Luke 3:22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.

Luke 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age,

If baptism is required for salvation, this says Jesus needed it to be saved.

Look at the apostle Paul. He was probably the greatest soul-winner ever, yet look at what he says about baptism;

1 Cor 1:14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;

1 Cor 1:15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.

1 Cor 1:16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.

1 Cor 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.

2. Religion

Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

3. Communion

1 Cor 11:23 For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:

1 Cor 11:24 And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.

1 Cor 11:25 After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.

1 Cor 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come.

4. Good Works

Titus 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

5. The Ten Commandments

Gal 3:21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law.

Gal 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Gal 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

James 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

In a ten link chain all it takes to fall to your death is for one link to break.

6. Born A Christian

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

John 1:13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

If you could get to heaven any other way than the cross of Jesus, then Jesus’ death was a mistake!

Then God didn’t have to become a man, live perfect, die and rise again!

B. A Cross Of Mocking

Verse 39 again; railed

Mat 27:39 And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads,

Mat 27:40 And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

Mat 27:41 Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said,

Mat 27:42 He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

Mat 27:43 He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

1 Cor 1:18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

C. A Cross Of Mistake

You can make many mistakes in life;

1. Marry the wrong person

2. Lead a life of crime

3. Get hooked on drugs and or alcohol

4. Get pregnant out of wedlock

This man made mistakes in his life. That is why he was hanging there on the cross being crucified.

But the biggest mistake he ever made was rejecting the One on the cross next to him because this is his fate.

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

Rev 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

I. THE CROSS OF REDEMPTION

II. THE CROSS OF REJECTION

III. THE CROSS OF RECEPTION

John 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Received Him; Reception.

A. A Cross Of Admitting

Luke 23:40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

Luke 23:41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

Admitting we are sinners;

Rom 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Look at the parable of the Publican and the Pharisee in; Luke 18:9 And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

Luke 18:10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

Luke 18:11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

Luke 18:12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

Luke 18:13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Luke 18:14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Be merciful to me. Don’t give me what I deserve. A sinner.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Wages = What we deserve.

Sometimes the hardest part in soul-winning is getting the person to admit that they are a sinner on their way to hell.

B. A Cross Of Asking

Luke 23:42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

Rom 10:9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Rom 10:11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

Rom 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

C. A Cross Of Accepting

Luke 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Jesus accepted his appeal.

Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:

Eph 1:5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,

Eph 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.

Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

But we have to accept the gift;

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

You accept it just as you would a birthday gift. You have to reach out and receive it and then open it or it does you no good.
