From Vision to Action (Joshua 2 & 3)

Last week we talked about Joshua’s call, his courage and the presence of God with him. We saw how the presence and strength of God called him to lead his generation to their call.

Now we move from that call to the beginning of the action. Moving from vision and dream to walking in the promise is a faith that works. It is that time when energy, passion, excitement, and vision must roll up its sleeves to begin to carry out the mission.

For Joshua to make his life matter for eternity, he had to begin to mobilize the people of God to carry out their conquest. They must, as a people (not just the leader – as had been the case with Moses), follow in obedience to possess what had been promised since the days of Abraham.

Do you understand the importance there? Abraham had seen the vision. Jacob had heard the promise. Yet generations had come and gone and no one had grasped hold of what God had said was for them. But this is the generation that would praise the Lord and possess what others missed.

It is our time. Surely you have come into the kingdom for such a time as this.

13 And that ye will save alive my father, and my mother, and my brethren, and my sisters, and all that they have, and deliver our lives from death.

14 And the men answered her, Our life for yours, if ye utter not this our business. And it shall be, when the LORD hath given us the land, that we will deal kindly and truly with thee.

15 Then she let them down by a cord through the window: for her house was upon the town wall, and she dwelt upon the wall.

16 And she said unto them, Get you to the mountain, lest the pursuers meet you; and hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers be returned: and afterward may ye go your way.

17 And the men said unto her, We will be blameless of this thine oath which thou hast made us swear.

18 Behold, when we come into the land, thou shalt bind this line of scarlet thread in the window which thou didst let us down by: and thou shalt bring thy father, and thy mother, and thy brethren, and all thy father’s household, home unto thee.

19 And it shall be, that whosoever shall go out of the doors of thy house into the street, his blood shall be upon his head, and we will be guiltless: and whosoever shall be with thee in the house, his blood shall be on our head, if any hand be upon him.

20 And if thou utter this our business, then we will be quit of thine oath which thou hast made us to swear.

9 Then Joshua said to the sons of Israel, "Come here, and hear the words of the LORD your God."

10 Joshua said, "By this you shall know that the living God is among you, and that He will assuredly dispossess from before you the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Hivite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, and the Jebusite.

11 "Behold, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth is crossing over ahead of you into the Jordan.

12 "Now then, take for yourselves twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one man for each tribe.

13 "It shall come about when the soles of the feet of the priests who carry the ark of the LORD, the Lord of all the earth, rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan will be cut off, and the waters which are flowing down from above will stand in one heap."
