“THE TRANSFORMATION OF A FISHERMAN”
Acts 2:14-37
THE TRANSFORMATION BEGINS
Vs. 14 - Is this the same Peter that denied knowing the Lord three times? His boldness is evident by his standing and also lifting up his voice. The eleven stood with him. He is speaking in a common language for he desires to be understood. What he is about to say is inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Vs. 15 - Peter explains why they are mocking (vs. 13). No Jew would be found drinking wine at 9 a.m. in the morning.
Vs. 16 - Joel predicted this would happen.
Vs. 17-18 - Peter quoted directly from the Old Testament scripture. He is enforcing what took place.
Vs. 19-21 - In the future, five things will happen. (Joel 2:28, Zechariah 12:10, 13:7)
1.) “I will show wonders in heaven above.”
2.) “Signs in the earth beneath”
3.) “The sun shall be turned into darkness”
4.) “The moon to blood.”
5.) “Whosoever will calls on the Lord will be saved.”
Vs. 22 - THE ENDORSEMENT OF JESUS
1.) Approved of God.
2.) Performed miracles, wonders and signs. These were all done before their eyes.
Vs. 23-24 - WHAT HAPPENED TO JESUS WAS FORETOLD: HIS DEATH, BURIAL AND RESURRECTION
1.) He was delivered up.
2.) He was crucified and slain.
3.) He arose from the dead.
4.) Nothing could hold him.
Vs. 25 - PETER AGAIN REFERS TO OLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE
What David saw in the future. Jesus would always be king of Israel.
Vs. 26 - David was rejoicing at what was shown him. Jesus promised a future resurrection. David had hope in the future of that resurrection.
Vs. 27 - A twofold meaning of a soul in hell:
1.) The grave. 2)Sheol (Luke 16:19-31, Hebrews 2:14-15
Vs. 28 - The Lord has not left us in darkness. David rejoices in this knowledge.
Vs. 29-32 - David was one of the Jew’s favored leaders. This was proof of a promised resurrection for David. He is a prophet who prophesied that God would raise up Jesus. David’s body is still in his tomb till this day. Jesus’ tomb is empty because He is risen .
Vs. 33-35 - Christ has asended and is on the right hand of the Father. He has sent the Holy Ghost as promised.
*This is undeniable proof that Jesus arose from the dead and is alive. David will participate in a body resurrection. In that day David will be seated at the right hand of Jesus.
Vs. 36 - “Lord” Greek - kuros -supreme in authority
“Christ- the anointed one.”
THE TRANSFORMATION IS COMPLETE
Vs. 37 - “They were pricked in their hearts. This is sincere conviction. “What shall we do?” What a great question.
Vs. 38 - Peter’s Altar Call
1.) “Repent”
2.) Be baptized
3.) Receive the gift of the Holy Ghost
Vs. 39-40 - Peter repeats Joel’s prophecy (Joel 2:28)
THE RESULTS OF THE TRANSFORMATION
Vs. 41 - “Gladly” (Hilarious) Three thousand souls were converted and that is just an estimate.
Vs. 42 - The Church Being Nurtured: All of these create a healthy church.
*Doctrine
*Fellowship
*Communion
*Prayer
Vs. 43 - *Fear - a Godly respect. The results were signs and wonders.
Vs. 44 - They stayed together because of the revival. Collections were made to provide for needs, mainly for food.
Vs. 45 - Everyone’s needs were taken care of.
Vs. 46 - They continued to pray for the Holy Ghost baptism. They were also breaking bread together. They gathered in the temple court because the crowd was so large. It was a great season of seeking and sharing.
Vs. 47 - “Praising God” They were seeking for a deeper experience with God. God always rewards heartfelt worship. Many were added to the church daily. (This was the first time to be called the church).
God has an even greater revival for the church today!
