Summary: Every disciple must be equipped to do the ministry.

INTRODUCTION

A disciple is a follower. A follower follows the teachings of his master. His master’s teachings are designed to equip him to his task.

“And indeed He gave some to be apostles; and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some pastors and teachers; with a view to the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ…”

Ephesians 4:11-12

Jesus set it at the beginning of his ministry that every disciple must be equipped to do the ministry.

I. SEEING THEM AS THEY ARE, 2-7 (Jesus saw as they are; fishermen)

As we have read this passage many times already, we all know that Jesus’ real intention for Simon and his partners is to call them as his servants—fishers of men. Obviously, he knows some important factors they can use in the service. These are…

A. Skills

These people live by the Sea of Galilee all their life. They were exposed to the kind of life in that vicinity. It is natural for them to acquire the skill of a good fisherman. They know all the matters about fishing. They know how to catch big fish as well as small fish.

A couple of years ago, as a young boy I was exposed to what our community do best. That is shoe making—so I grew-up learning the skills of a shoe making until it became my while studying in High School.

It is not our position in society that matters to God. It is not about being rich or poor. Because, whether you are rich or poor, if you are a disciple you have to serve the Lord and that start using your skills.

B. Gifts (1 Corinthians 12:1-12)

Skills and gifts are two different things. Gift is something that you do out of what is inside of your heart.

II. GIVING THEM WHAT THEY NEED, 8-10a

A. Trainings/Information

Jesus is well aware of their skill but he wants to let them learn some about fishing. He wants them to improve their skills. He is letting them see how. In short, every disciple must be trained and informed continuously about their trades.

B. Equipments

There’s a need to provide the necessary things to be used in getting things done.

III. LEADING THEM DO WHAT THEY HAVE TO DO, 10B-11

“They followed Him.’

A. Courage; they need to take heart (Do not fear.)

B. Charge; they need to see the task (From now on you will be taking men alive.)

Note: Finish every task that have started—contra “Ningas-Cogon” mentality

CONCLUSION

Before Jesus called us, He knows exactly who you are, what are your experiences and what you are capable of doing. So, he knows exactly also where to put you and what task is suitable for you in the expansion of his Kingdom. He believed in you, therefore you must believe in yourself also that you can do things as He expected you to do. Allow your self to be taught and trained (that is to become a true disciple) and do the work as a faithful servant.
