In the Letter to Smyrna, John pointed out that the Christians there had experienced major oppression. They were “poor,” but also rich, alluding to the reputation of the city as pagan and wealthy. John’s letter went on to mention blasphemy by the Jews in Smyrna, who he called part of a “synagogue of Satan.”
