About David
  • Education: I received an undergraduate degree from Samford University in Birmingham, AL. I received my M. Div. and D. Min degrees from Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. I did post-doctoral work at Cambridge University in England.
  • Experience: I've been preaching since 1970 and a full-time pastor since 1977. I've been at Green Acres since 1991.
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: Know that my preaching is a distillation of dozens of years of reading and listening to good preachers. I strive for excellence in content and structure. I am happy for people to use my ideas, but as I always cite a source, I encourage every preacher to do the same.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: Hearing Stephen Olford in 1972 preach for the first time on the conditions of the human heart had a profound impact on me.
  • One of my favorite illustrations: The true story in 1266 of Kublai Khan requesting Mateo Polo to return to Rome and send missionaries back to tell his people about Jesus. The Church in Rome failed to respond. The first Christian missionaries didn't show up in Mongolia until 1991. What a missed opportunity!
  • Family: Cindy and I have been married since 1974 and I have two grown daughters and four grandchildren.
  • What my parents think of my sermons: They've both been in heaven for many years, so if they are part of the "cloud of witnesses" I hope they are smiling.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: She seldom praises my preaching because God has called her to keep me humble. So when she does compliment a message, I know it is special.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: Every sermon should have at least ONE point!
  • Books that have had an impact: Everything by Vance Havner and Warren Wiersbe
  • Hobbies: I am an avid golfer and reader. I enjoy writing and have published twelve Christian non-fiction books. Inspired by my friend, Joel Rosenberg, I have written two novels under my first and middle names, David Orlo. You can check on both categories of books on Amazon.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: Look to Jesus and be saved.
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: At one time I used a small three ring binder for my notes. In an impassioned moment I swept my hand forward for emphasis. I accidentally caught one of the round binders and the notebook went flying off the pulpit and struck an elderly deacon on the forehead. I have heard of preaching cutting people to the heart, but never the forehead. He did stay awake every sermon after that!!!
  • What I want on my tombstone: Philippians 1:21

During WWII, soldiers were often given Bibles to take into battle. I recall one veteran showing me his. A German bullet punctured it and traveled halfway through until it stopped in Psalm 91. What does Psalm 91:11 say? “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” ...read more

When I was growing up in L.A. (Lower Alabama) we usually had four or five dogs and cats to claim as our pets. By virtue of being the oldest child, my older sister, Judy, demanded the right to name all our pets. (First-born siblings can be control-freaks as the rest of us know). We had a dog that ...read more

Fifteen years ago, I was serving as pastor in Alabama and our church was in a capital stewardship campaign to raise money to build a new building. There was one particular lady in our church who was a widow. Her husband had left her a lot of money, and she had a lot more than she really needed. She ...read more

Persistence is an important factor in prayer. But persistence is a valuable commodity for every area of your Christian life, not just prayer. God blesses those who persist. So whatever you may be facing right now, don’t give up! If you’re ever tempted to give up, just remember the composer Brahms. ...read more
