About David
  • Education: B.Ed (Hons) in Religious Studies and History, from University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 1974. M.Ed in Advanced Educational Studies, from University of Edinburgh, 1982. Ph.D in Theology (Dogmatics) from Greenwich School of Theology validated by Pochefstroom University, South Africa, 1999. Dip Th in Christian Ministry from Westfield House, Cambridge, England, which is the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England's Seminary and Training College, July 2007.
  • Experience: Lutheran by conviction since 1971; his teachings and stance on 'Justification by faith' led me to leave the RC Church and be accepted into the Church of England by the Bishop of Durham, but still had no inner peace until converted in October 1972 after which I was baptised by immersion. Member of Lutheran Church from November 2003-Augist 2010. Now Teaching Elder at Erskine FIEC Church serving as part-time preacher and worship leader and pastoral visitation.
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: I hope they are helpful; by all means 'tweak them' to suit your target congregation.
  • One of my favorite illustrations: A figurine from Malta which has 3 men in a fishing boat; think 3 'fellows' rather than 'men', in a 'ship' rather than a 'boat'; this is my concept of 'church' - 'fellow-ship' with all pulling together.
  • Family: Erskine Church has been a Secession Church and a Presbyterian Church but is now a member congregation of the Fellowship of Independent Evangelical Churches in the UK.
  • What my parents think of my sermons: Unfortunately both have passed away.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: She usually finds them interesting and encourages me to practice what I preach.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: Speak slower; and for not more than 15 minutes.
  • Hobbies: Hill walking, dog walking, badminton, grandson and grand-daughter sitting.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: Be anxious about nothing; pray about everything.
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: Only that I keep a record of the sermons I have preached, going back to 1986, and once I preached a sermon in a church where I had preached a very smilar one seven years earlier, and one member of the congregation remembered and picked me up on it! Usually many would find it difficult to remember what I preached on last Sunday!
  • What I want on my tombstone: 'I told you I was ill!'

A look at Election and the place of Free Will based on Jesus' words "Many are called but few are chosen" in Matthew 22

Matthew 22: 1 – 14 (emphasise v. 14) Jesus said ‘Many are called but few are chosen’. This raises three questions, 1. on what basis are people ‘chosen’, 2 why are only a ‘FEW chosen’? and 3 who does the choosing? God alone, or o we have any free will in the ...read more

  • What The Ascension Of Jesus Meant To Him, And To Means To Us

    Contributed on May 20, 2014

Many Christians seem to ignore the Ascension, and even seem embarrassed to talk about Jesus physically going up into the clouds, but it is a historical fact. Jesus had done everything His Father required of Him, and He is now by His side working for us.

Acts 1:6-11 Eph 1:18-23 The Ascension 29 MAY 2014 The New Testament records how Jesus died on what we now call Good Friday and how He rose from the dead on what we now call Easter Sunday. I prefer to call it Resurrection Sunday, 1. because the word Easter is not in the Bible, ...read more

  • The Question And The Only Right Answer To It

    Contributed on May 5, 2014

The question which the Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas 2,000 years ago is still relevant today and we have to encourage people to ask it, and no matter how 'diverse' or 'multi-cultural' our society is, there is only one correct answer to it.

Psalm 34:1-9 and 17-22 (all) emphasize v.22 Acts 16: 16-34 Sermon: What must I do to be Saved? There's only one answer to that question. “Saved”. A little 5-letter word usually being the past tense of the verb “save” which means 'set free' or ...read more

    Contributed on Apr 19, 2014

Man things have changed in the last 200 years, some for the better and some for the worse, but the Gospel message remains the same. What was 'most certainly true' for the first Christians should be the same for churches and preachers of the Word today.

Matthew 28 verses 16 - 20 Romans 10 verses 5 -15 We are the heirs or the spiritual descendents of the eleven disciples or apostles, who witnessed Jesus' death and His resurrection, and spent over 5 weeks with Him before He ascended into heaven where He is seated at the right hand of the ...read more

  • Patience Is A Fruit Of The Holy Spirit, But There Is A Place For Action

    Contributed on Apr 6, 2014

God ran out of patience with sinful humanity, and sent the Flood. He ran out of patience with Sodom and Gomorrah and sent fire and brimstone. Jews waited patiently for the Messiah, as we wait for His return, but do we have to be patient about everything?

Isaiah 35: 1-10 Matthew 11: 2-11 James 5: 7-10 Sermon: Patience: a virtue, and fruit of the Holy Spirit In one of the episodes of 'The Simpsons', Homer goes into a Hamburger place. The sign outside says 'Fast Food', but on the counter a sign says: 'Orders served in 2 minutes'. He ...read more
