About Hal
  • Education: Hal is a graduate of Wheaton College (B.A.), and Denver (M.Div.) and Fuller Seminaries (D.Min).
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: I am a visual person. Many of these sermons were accompanied by white board diagrams and/or powerpoint slides, along with printed notes. I wish I could reconstruct those for you.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: The God Questions -(simple apologetics to build believers’ confidence and bring seekers to faith.) This series launched the national God Questions Campaign and movement. Created for Significance (Luke 14-16, one of the most pivotal sections of the New Testament) Future History: The Book of Daniel. People want to know about the End Times, and Daniel is a simpler, shorter course to it than Revelation. During the series, attendance increased by 17%. Jonah: Responding to God. The book of Jo
  • One of my favorite illustrations: The Pepsi Can. Think about it this way. Sitting on the desk in front of me is a Pepsi can. Here’s one theory behind it: Millennia ago, a huge explosion sent a small meteor spinning through space. As it cooled, a caramel-colored, effervescent liquid formed on its surface. As time passed, aluminum crept out of the water and shaped itself into just these dimensions. –Which just happened to be the right shape and size for a human hand, which would develop a few thousand years later. Ove
  • Family: Hal is Founding and Lead Pastor of New Song Community Church in Oceanside, CA. He and Lori have two grown and married children who both love and serve the Lord.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: "When the man of God speaks the Word of God, it becomes the Word of God." I say this to myself every Saturday afternoon. There is no higher privilege than speaking the Word of God, and no more amazing phenomenon than to become the channel for the words of God to people.
  • Books that have had an impact: Seed: The Bible Questions, The God Questions, I Love Sundays, Future History (Daniel), Jonah Nicodem: Prayer Coach Hybels: Rediscovering Church Maxwell: The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership (leadership) Yancey: Disappointment with God (pain) Wilkinson: The Prayer of Jabez (prayer) Rusaw: The Externally Focused Church (community tranformation) Lewis: The Screwtape Letters (basic discipleship/growth) Alcorn: Heaven (fabulous insights) Harley: His Needs, Her Needs (marriage)
  • Hobbies: Mentoring pastors, swimming, reading, training church planters, traveling with my family.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: "Come to Jesus."
  • What I want on my tombstone: Look! He’s getting up!
