• Education: I attended Jones County Junior College in 1947-48. After that my brother, Billy, and I attended Kletzing College in University Park, Iowa, then I attended William Penn College, Oskaloosa, Iowa where I obtained a B. A. Degree, and Iowa State University at Ames, Iowa, for a summer, to validate my Iowa teacher’s Certificate. In the years since, I have attended the University of Southern Mississippi and Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA briefly.
• Experience: I started preaching while still a teen-ager. I was ordained an elder in the Methodist Protestant Church in December of 1946. I have preached in churches in Iowa, Mississippi and Louisiana. My faithful wife has been my partner and companion assisting at the piano all these years since 1950.
• Comment to those looking at my sermons: My sermons are based on the Scriptures and are to the point. They are not rambling. They are easy to follow. I hand out printed copies of my notes and scriptures as I have them prepared so the people know where I am going, and when I am about to finish. I try not to go very much over the time.
• Family: I am the oldest of 11 children. My father and mother were ministers in the Methodist Protest Church for over 60 years. I have three brothers and a brother-in-law serving in the ministry of the Methodist Protestant Church today. My wife, Helen, and I have five children that have presented us with 12 grand-children and two great-grant-children.
• What my parents think of my sermons: I had the privilege of being the pastor of my parent’s church in their old age. I felt honored when they called me their pastor! I believe that they though more highly of me than I deserved.
• What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: My wife feels free to correct me when she sees me make a mistake, but generally, she thinks very highly of my sermons. She has had me for her pastor for sixty years, and she is not ready to make a change, yet! She thinks my illustrations are good.
• Best advice given to me about preaching: Use lots of illustrations. I am trying to remember to do this!
• Books that have had an impact: The best book of all my experience is the Bible.
• Hobbies: I like to read, work on my sermons on the computer and send them out by e-mail and post them on Sermon Central web site. I like gospel music and the great old hymns. I like to play the bass guitar with my wife at the piano.
• If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: People, get right with God! It is later than you think!
• What I want on my tombstone: He loved in word, in deed and in Truth
