    based on 4 ratings

Appropriate for July 4th Weekend, this sermon offers a brief glimpse into where freedom and celebration are perhaps lacking in the Christian life and how joy and freedom are ultimately to be found in Christ alone.

PBS once had an interesting program on fireworks – how they are made, how they work and so on. By way of contrast the newspaper was full of stories about communities and civic agencies canceling their fireworks shows on account of extreme fire hazard and fiscal concerns in a weak economy. more

As the woman at the well was offered living water,so we are given soul refreshment in Jesus.

On a recent trip to the Holy Land, we were told Arab separatists in this town of Nablus, an hour north of Jerusalem, are as amped up as they are in the Gaza strip, further southwest. Though I never felt in danger on all my trips to the beautiful Holy Land, I believe the racial tensions there in more

  • Learning Courage In Christ

Fear walls us in and makes us like the servant of the Master that buried the talent he had been entrusted with in the ground. Faith sees ourselves as gifted and bold in Christ.

Today’s lesson finds a man digging a hole in the ground. We learn that a man going on a journey entrusted a portion of his wealth to three of his employees. Two of the three employees invested their wealth and received commendable returns. The third was afraid and hid his in a hole in the ground. more

  • Remain In Christ

    Contributed on Oct 25, 2002
    based on 31 ratings

With things changing about us faster than we can imagine, we can remain the same --- strong and steady in Christ.

Remain In Christ John 8:31-36 In our elementary school chapel service last Sunday, I noted how attentive all the kids were when the object for the children’s message was a pumpkin. There is something about pumpkins that grabs our attention and keeps it. My wife suggests it’s because it only more

  • What To Do When There's No Fireworks

    Contributed on Jun 21, 2011

WHAT TO DO WHEN THERE'S NO FIREWORKS Around sunset one very hot summer’s eve when we (in the Army Chaplaincy) were in Iraq, about forty miles north of Baghdad, we saw the military police pull up in the building just next door. Out came two Iraqi Prisoners of War, their hands were shackled behind more

  • Ever Been Bothered By People?

    Contributed on Mar 25, 2011

EVER BEEN BOTHERED BY PEOPLE? Sometimes church and worship can keep us from the living water people need and that we need. People can actually hide behind church, the machinery of church and worship. Recently I attended a Wednesday Lenten service with my wife in my former church. A stranger more

    Contributed on Nov 14, 2008

Barbara Brown Taylor writes "Fear is a small cell with no air in it and no light. It is suffocating inside and dark. There is no room to turn around inside it. You can only face in one direction, but it hardly matters since you cannot see anyhow. There is no future in the dark. Everything more
