About Kevin
  • Education: Bachelor of Religious Education (Ministerial Major), God’s Bible School and College, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1988; Master of Divinity (New Testament Major), Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky, 1993; Master of Library Science, University of Missouri-Columbia, 1999
  • Experience: Pastor of Perryville and Crossroads United Methodist Churches, Perryville, Missouri, July 2017 - present; Pastor of Farm Hill United Methodist Church, Harrisburg, Arkansas, January 2013 - June 2017; Preacher in various capacities since 1980; Pastor of three churches in Ohio, Tennessee, and Missouri during 1985-1999; Currently Director, Mississippi County Library System
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: I try to preach biblically - let me know what I can improve - I do listen to comments.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: While pastoring in Tennessee, I preached a series from Hebrews 11. It may not have helped anyone else, but it really helped me through some dark days. I hope to turn the sermons into a book eventually.
  • Family: I have been married to my wife, Carol, since 1984. We have no children but are owned by two cats - Ike and Max.
  • What my parents think of my sermons: They were proud for awhile, but they haven’t said all that much in the last few years - of course, I have never been their pastor, so they have never heard me on a consistent basis.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: She usually enjoys them, but if she doesn’t she lets me know!
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: K-I-S-S - keep it simple, stupid (from a layman). Quit while the audience is wanting you to say more instead of going on and saying more until the audience wishes you had quit (from a homiletics professor).
  • Books that have had an impact: Preaching in the Spirit, Dennis Kinlaw Biblical Preaching, Lloyd Perry
  • Hobbies: Reading, computers, Star Trek, science fiction/fantasy, sports (both participant and spectator).
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: You must be born again!
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: When younger and dumber and slower than I am now, the church I was pastoring was willed some money. The lady who was administering the estate was in church when I announced the fact that the church had received this gift. I mentioned that Marlene was the..., and my brain got stuck on what you call the person who administers estates! I finally came out with "execUtor", but pronounced it as if it sounded like execution! Marlene sweetly said, "I think you mean executrix." I have never forgotten!
  • What I want on my tombstone: Jesus Is All the World to Me

The shortest sermon I know is only ten words. It was preached by my grandfather to a small, country congregation on the story of the Good Samaritan (Mark 10:35-45). He read the account of an outsider who demonstrates true neighbor love by stopping on the road to care for a bleeding and badly ...read more
