• Comment to those looking at my sermons: From the cover page of "Living Responsively: Theological Reflections on Living in Relationships," (published posthumously): "Always deeply interested in theological questions, always questioning, Dr. Hoogland early on earned the ire of conservative church leaders in his denomination by daring to challenge the proper use of the word 'infallibility' in relation to the Bible....[H]e began his career life as a pastor, first to a large rural congregation, then to a university community. A midlife career change to fulltime pastoral counseling might have been expected to put theological questions on the 'back burner.' However, 'old theological issues took on new meanings,' he writes, 'in the light of painful human experience' as encountered in the lives of his counselees. 'Living Responsively: Theological Reflections on Living in Relationships' is the result of his efforts to tease out how the two--theology and human need--interact.
