About Phil
  • Education: I trained at Commonwealth Bible College in Sydney, Australia. I have a BTh from CBC, and also a Dip.Min from the Australian College of Theology. And most importantly, 52 years in the school of hard knocks.
  • Experience: First Assembly is my fourth pastorate in 28 years of ministry.
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: Use anything you can ... spit out the bones.
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: A sermon I heard preached in 1989 at the Australian Assemblies of God National Conference by guest speaker Pastor Mark Rutland. It was entitled "Jesus and the Blood Covenant". He expounded the theme of grace until there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.
  • Family: I am married to Alli, and we have 4 great kids - Ben, Sam (married to Delanie), Bethwyn and Ewan ... and the world's loveliest granddaughter: Haven Kate Morgan, born on Thanksgiving Day 2018.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: She loves it when I just preach as myself. She has zero tolerance when I’m trying to sound like someone else - and she ALWAYS knows when I’m doing that.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: (1) "The great sermon is the enemy of the good sermon" (Warren Wiersbe on Preaching Today), (2) "I have a conviction that no sermon is ready for preaching, not ready for writing out, until we can express it’s theme in a short pregnant sentence as clear as crystal. I find the getting of that sentence is the hardest, the most exacting, and the most fruitful labour in my study." (J.H.Jowett, quoted by Haddon Robinson in ’Expository Preaching’), (3) "There’s always next week" (Me).
  • Books that have had an impact: "The Pursuit of Holiness" Jerry Bridges "Among God’s Giants" J.I.Packer "Spiritual Leadership" Oswald Sanders ... and a lot of stuff by C.H.Spurgeon, D.Martyn Lloyd-Jones, and numerous others.
  • Hobbies: Running and reading. Golf when I can.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: Don’t let a day go by without thinking about eternity.
  • What I want on my tombstone: Stand back ... resurrection coming!

The wise person will seek only Godly counsel, even though it is not flattering, and can be hard to hear.

READ: 2 Chronicles 18:1-27 (Text verses 6-7). [TELL STORY OF AHAB / JEHOSHAPHAT / MICAIAH] Tonight I’d like to start with THREE (3) PROPOSITIONS: Firstly: 1. MANY PEOPLE SEEK ONLY COUNSELLORS WHOSE WORDS ARE APPEALING. Ahab had a host of such "prophets" around him - he had lulled ...read more

    God uses ordinary people.

READ: 1 Corinthians 1:26-31 What kind of people does God invest in? Paul’s words here in this passage might well come as a bit of a shock. They’re shocking because they run COUNTER-CULTURALLY against most of the ideas that we’ve all been raised with. Our society values those who have the ...read more
