I want you to remember back to January 1982. An Air Florida jet crashed into the Potomac River? Only a handful of people clung to life in those icy waters. A U.S. Park Department helicopter arrived on the scene. It lowered a life-ring to a man named Arland Williams. He refused the rope and passed it on to other injured passengers. Time after time he passed the life-ring on. “The rescue team saved five other passengers and then returned to Mr. Williams. He could not be found as he had sunk beneath the icy waters” (Remarks on Awarding the United States Coast Guard’ Gold Lifesaving Medal to Arland Williams, June 6, 1983. www.regan.utexas.edu/resource/speeches/1983/60683a.htm)
