Sandy Sheppard- One of the funniest parties I ever attended was to “roast” Walt, a good friend and mentor, who was celebrating his 50th birthday. Each guest told a humorous story about Walt and presented him with a gag gift. Then Carol got up to speak. “My mother told me if I can’t say something good about someone, then I shouldn’t say anything at all.” Pausing for a few moments, she appeared to be trying to think of something good to say about Walt. Looking defeated, she shook her head and sat down. Then audience roared with laughter. Although Carol misused her mother’s advice, the point she made was still a good one. Often, remaining silent is preferable to criticizing.
