WHEN KNUTE ROCKNE was coaching at Notre Dame, a sports columnist in the South Bend newspaper earned the reputation of being the meanest and cruelest writer in the country. This anonymous writer wrote about the teams weaknesses, pointed out the mistakes of individual players and told them they were lazy, they broke training and didn’t discipline themselves. The angry players came and complained to Rockne who listened with sympathy but said he could not stop the writer. He advised that the only way the players could stop it was to go out and play so well they proved him wrong.

LATER it became known that the writer of the columne was Knute Rockne himself. He knew their weaknesses and used the paper as a device to develop a better team. God’s Word often makes us uncomfortable but it always tells us the truth because God loves us and wants to make us winners.
