It seems as though the devastating water of the Asian tsunami uncovered an ancient city 45 miles south of Madras, India. Apparently, according to old British travel writings, the area was once a 7th century port city with seven pagodas, six of which were submerged by the sea. The location was part of a vibrant Hindu pilgrimage spot. The great December 2004 tsunami in moments washed away all the earth to uncover intricate stone wall carvings of animals of the once flourishing town lost to the sea and to history. Much remains to be seen of this old town.

This was an amazing find that would have been utterly undiscovered if not for an enormous calamity. The tragic disaster that took so many lives was also a revelation of the true nature of that area. It all reminds me of how the disasters of our lives reveal many important things to us about ourselves. These things I believe couldn’t be found any other way.
